Strategies for identifying students who need support
3
• Early identifier assessmentsThese are initial assessments where literacy and numeracy issues can
be identified and acted upon.
Part C 19 (a) of the English Language and Literacy Policy (ELLaN) states Early
identification and intervention will be systematically embedded in core
subjects
Include language, literacy, and numeracy criteria in assessment rubrics – your
ALLaN Faculty Liaison can assist with developing instructive performance
standards.
Incorporate formative assessments (aligned with summative assessments) that
explicitly focus on language, literacy, and numeracy requirements.

• Incorporate self- and peer-evaluations into learning activities (some
tools are available on the ELLaN Interact2 site.
• Provide language, literacy, and numeracy feedback on assessments:
use one of the easy-to-implement templates or copy-and-paste
comments banks available on the ELLaN Interact2 site. Your ALLaN
Liaison may have a referral form that you can use post marking to
refer a student that needs assistance.
• Use early, low-stakes assessments or online quizzes.
• Monitor issues raised by individual students through emails, forums,
tutorials and refer them to CSU resources or specific appointments
listed by ALLaN.

Strategies for supporting students to get the help they need
5
• Ensure the language, literacy, and numeracy skills required to do well in your academic
discipline and profession are explicitly identified, sequenced, addressed, modelled, and
valued.
• Timely announcements on your subject Interact2 site: remind students of appropriate
ALLaN services and study guides three weeks prior to assessment submission, after
grades and feedback have been distributed, prior to the start of exams, etc.
• Provide language, literacy, and numeracy feedback on assessments and refer at-risk
students to ALLaN: use one of the easy-to-implement templates or copy-and-paste
comments banks available on the ELLaN Interact2 site.
• Organise a tutorial by an ALLaN Adviser or include an ALLaN discussion forum at
critical times.
• Work with your ALLaN Faculty Liaison to address issues and explore options.
• Explore and employ the resources on the ELLaN Interact2 site.

English Language, Literacy and Numeracy Policy
20
• Applies to all staff and students at CSU.
• Values the scaffolded development of communication and problem-solving
skills in learning, teaching, and assessment activities.
• Requires the design of course curricula that embeds, scaffolds, integrates,
demonstrates, and benchmarks skill development.
• Requires academic staff to identify students who need support to develop
their skills and to inform them of support options.
• Mandates early identification and intervention in core subjects that students
meet in their first year of study.
• Focuses attention:– In the first stages of a course on gathering ideas and information through critical reading,
listening and observing
– In the middle stages of a course on analysing, reasoning, and producing well-argued and
carefully constructed accounts of complex thinking
– In the final stages on students demonstrating threshold professional skill proficiencies.
• Is supported by a variety of resources on the English Language, Literacy and
