AMA Academic Division Continuing Area of Focus for 2005/2006

Special Interest Groups Identify appropriate roles for SIGs on AC

(implemented stronger AC liaison roles) Offer a vehicle for SIG conference special

sessions to access conference proceedings in designated section (provided opportunities for SIG special sessions to be posted on ARC)

How do we (AC) better connect with the SIGs? (elevated role of the AC liaisons and provided more proactive guidance in budgeting, SIG management and programming)

Promote integrated events (multiple SIGs) wherein common themes are encouraged? (pre conference events are more aggressively promoted with a particular focus on cross SIG programming)

Thought Leadership Continue to work on positioning of Winter

Educators’ Conference (working in concert with the AMA Knowledge Coalition effort)

Continue to work on programming initiatives that advance leading edge scholarship/thought leadership (conducted an AC workshop with the assistance of P. Root investigating way the AC can help facilitate academic and practitioner interface in both teaching and research-results passed along to R. Lusch)

Ethics focus (continued providing support for the ethics workshop)

Repurpose academic output for practitioner consumption (working on providing more practitioner and academic interface via ARC)

Ph.D. Recruiting and Nurturing Develop and disseminate information about

Ph.D. career paths (actively support and fund the Doctoral SIG – also support special initiatives in the individual SIGs that recognize and support doctoral students)

Partnership with other interested organizations (e.g., Ph.D. Project, AACSB) (continue to maintain and active role in the KPMG PhD Project – also have increase our face time at their events)

Tools and pre-conference dissertation events (no

progress to date)

New Faculty Workshop Useful early career AMA retention tool When is it best to hold these events? How does the AC want to handle formal

oversight of this initiative? Do we want a portfolio of products (e.g.,

instruction, professional sociology, research program management) or should we go with one size fits all?[Conducted a second new faculty workshop at the Winter 2006 conference in St. Pete Beach co-chaired by R. Lutz and M. Houston; moved this event to the summer conference in 2007; both Lutz and Houston have indicated their willingness to continue to co-chair the event; AMA needs to more effectively promote this event]

Academic Resource Channel Provision for SIGs to create web sites and other

mechanisms to promote their activities Ph.D. educational tool (leading scholar video and

other types of lecture material) Streaming video options – instruction, web seminars,

leading scholar/practitioner panels Teaching tools (e.g., syllabi, classroom exercises) How to promote and increase the use of ARC and to

communicate the added value of ARC to the academic community?

Establishment of reasonable gate keeping protocols

Academic Practitioner Interface This issue has been a source of constant challenge for the

AMA – Does it warrant setting up a dedicated task force? We might seek to determine if we can create mailing

lists/sub lists where primary data collection could take place (particularly survey data)

ID opportunities for instructional interface and put in place a formal program in instructional support capabilities

Seek opportunities for archival data bases Put in place a formal architecture with the AC for

practitioner-academic interface initiatives[This is in part being picked up in the Knowledge Coalition effort in the AMA; trying to find a way to get members of the AC and conference co-chairs to attend M.Planet; part of the repositioning effort for the summer conference is to incorporate more practitioner-academic interface; encourage SIG programming with practitioner involvement]

AMA Academic Division New or Renewed Area of Focus for 2005/2006

Publications Assess the extent to which the leading AMA journals

are providing suitable access to top-tier multi-method research

Opportunities for advancing an additional leading AMA journal

What can or should be done on-line either via ARC or other vehicles to advance the publication dissemination needs of the AMA?[Both JM and JMR have endorsed an accordion policy permitting the journal issues to grow in size based upon the availability of suitable manuscripts – issues remain in terms of an increasing number of journals that are securing positions in the marketing academic marketplace which may in part be a function of the extent to which the AMA is strategically managing its major journals; have recently been involved in manuscript central issues pertaining to JM]

AMA Educator Value Proposition What can/should be done to provide added value

to AMA academic members? Should we be looking at partitioning

membership? Should we revisit the recent research to assess

value issues/opportunities? What more can we be doing in communicating

value to the AMA membership?[Dramatically improved the web context; AMA Newsletter communicates more frequently with the membership conveying activities and services available; increased doctoral student members to approximately 400]

Summer Conference Coordination and Positioning With the successful repositioning of the Winter Conference,

there is a need to name the positioning of the Summer Conference

Need to be cautious about the SC positioning to assure maintenance of a scholarly profile

How do we successfully integrate professional development of the SC without diluting the scholarship?

Does the AC want a formal structure for management oversight of the Summer Conference?[Summer conference theme is to focus more on professional development – this does not suggest a desire to diminish the quality of scholarship at the conference or the proceedings but rather this thematic focus is established to provide direction for pre event programming, special sessions and select workshops; the AC president and president elect designate have been assigned to oversee the summer conference with the past president and president elect to provide assistance in the programming of the winter conference.]

17

AMA Academic Division New or Renewed Area of Focus for 2005/2006

Special Event Management Should the AMA seek ownership of the Services

Conference? How does the AC want to manage special events? The AC presently has pre-conference event

guidelines – Does it want to revisit these guidelines in light of some type of overarching plan?

Are there specific events we would like to see the AMA promote and when during the year would we like to see these offered (e.g., ethics)?[More aggressive promotion of the pre conference programming opportunities principally among the SIGs who have priority but also among other interested parties – this is an excellent tool to drive home the positioning strategies for the two conferences.]
