  • The parts of the crest either represent national symbols or elements of a unique Namibian landscape and culture. The colours have been selected to represent the national spectrum, as influenced by the heritage from the Namibian flag:

    1. The Atom is one of the most basic recognisable symbols of science. Positioned under the sun it symbolises science and technology as the foundations of illumination at the University.

    2. The Arch is the threshold of knowledge. It is the gateway to the future and encourages a thirst for knowledge and discovery. Namibia becomes the threshold for new development - entering a new era.

    3. The Ribbon is derived from the diverse traditional cultures of Namibian dress, amongst the Damara, Herero, Himba and Owambo groups; it is a extension of the red band representing people. It is a symbol of achievement and prestige, and recognises traditional cultures of pageantry. The ribbon epitomises flexibility and adaptiveness by which NUST exemplifies and enables its students to achieve higher knowledge.

    4. The Sun represents the outcome of scientific and technological innovation and enlightenment. Education is a form of discovery, energy and life that this symbol should highlight through its embodiment of the sun.

    5. The Shield is the symbol of learning institutions (traditional) - signaling tradition, strength and readiness.

    6. The Red Band represents the people and also blood, which gives life. People are the lifeblood of the University and country. It refers to their heroism and their determination to build a future of equal opportunity for all. The position of the red band represents ‘crossing over the threshold’.

Thesis: Developing a Smart Recommender Framework for Differentiated Teaching and Learning in NamibiaSupervisor: Dr Edmore Chikohora Co-supervisor: Dr Nobert JereAbstract: This research aims to develop a Smart Recommender Framework for Differentiated

Teaching and Learning that promotes effective and efficient self-regulation of distance learning. Despite the growing body of research into the creation of smart differentiated teaching and learning environments, there is still no design framework that integrates the teaching and learning affordances of new web technologies with the educational Recommender Systems. Also, the predominance of techno-centric approaches to designing smart e-learning systems has resulted in most e-learning environments remaining largely unsuccessful. Technocentric smart e-learning environments lack the means to provide sufficient support to learners, often causing frustration and boredom and ultimately higher drop-out rates among distance learners.

This work has followed a two-phase design science research methodology. The first phase of the research strategy involved the theoretical grounding of the Smart Recommender Framework for Differentiated Teaching and Learning. The theoretical grounding was based on a systematic but non-exhaustive literature review. The output of the literature review was an initial model that was used to inform the empirical phase of the research. The second phase involved an empirical grounding process for the Smart Recommender Framework for Differentiated Teaching and Learning using both the Delphi Technique and the survey method. A sample of 70 distance students participated in the survey, the purpose of which was to capture the needs of learners. Also, a three-round Delphi study was conducted to determine the perceptions of experts in instructional design, system design and teaching and learning. The results of the two empirical studies showed that the components of the Smart Recommender Framework for Differentiated Teaching and Learning, which are important for both learners and experts, are smart learning principles, system design considerations, and technology. The framework was evaluated for utility through the third round of the Delphi Study. This research has two key contributions to add to academic knowledge, namely a Smart Recommender System for Differentiated Teaching and Learning and a set of design guidelines for Smart differentiated teaching and learning environments. The Smart Recommender System for Differentiated Teaching and Learning is of significance since it may be used as a theoretical and practical guide by e-learning designers.

Thesis: Comprehensive Study on the Impact of Using Agricultural Residues for Enhancing Building Energy Performance in Namibia

Supervisor: Prof Victor S KamaraCo-supervisor: Prof Paul ChisaleAbstract: This research was aimed at designing and measuring/testing an Energy Efficient in

Green Buildings (free from using electricity driven devices) using materials developed by proportionately mixing locally available agricultural residues/wastes i.e. rice, millet and maize husks and cow dung as a binder. The researcher conducted engineering investigations on how to maximize and leverage the usage of agricultural wastes to produce insolating materials that will ensure ambient /appropriate indoor temperature, and thermal comfort, during all seasons in a building.

A wide range of sample materials were developed from varying proportionate mixture of rice, millet and maize husks and cow dung to produce insolating boards and standards bricks which were tested using an apparatus designed for testing insulation and construction materials in accordance with ISO 8302, ASTM C177, EN 1946-2, EN 12664, EN12667, EN 12939, and DIN 52612. The following pertinent results were obtained: i) Samples A (composed of 40%, 30%, 10% and 20% maize, millet, rice husks and cow dung respectively) and C (composed of 20%, 10%, 30% and 40% maize, millet, rice husks and cow dung respectively) had the highest (i.e. 100.71 mW/m*K ) and lowest (i.e. 54.65 m2K/W) thermal conductivity respectively. This showed that Sample A having the lowest (i.e. 0.4002 m2K/W) and Sample C the highest (i.e. 0.6935 m2K/W) thermal resistivity respectively. Thus making insolating board from sample C the most appropriate for energy efficient buildings; ii) when 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% of marble dust were introduced in both samples A and C, sample C with 5% marble dust has the highest thermal conductivity (i.e. 78.08 mW/m*K) and compared with the thermal conductivity of sample C (i.e. 71.99 mW/m*K) without marble dust in the mix. iii) with 230mm X 110mm X 85mm bricks were also developed with varying proportionate mixtures of rice, millet, maize husks bricks the composition of 60% maize and 40% sand which recorded the lowest thermal conductivity of 127.24 mW/(m*K) and the highest thermal resistivity of 0.6051 m2K/W. This attested to the fact that the bricks from this materials were suitable for the design of affordable energy efficient building; v) in-situ measurements obtained from three experimental rigs and CFD validation model (i.e. Ansys) indicated that Sample C (composed of 20%, 10%, 30% and 40% maize, millet, rice husks and cow dung respectively) had better performance in terms of indoor temperatures and comfort level during both hot and cold seasons.

This study, therefore, showed that materials (i.e. insulating board and bricks) from such mixed proportion can be used for construction of an affordable and functional energy efficiency building in Namibia.
