B orri Srl is an Italian company foun-ded in 1951 that specialises inmanufacturing furniture for campers

and caravans. Originally a furniture-makerfor the residential sector, in 1990 it diversi-fied into the production of furniture and fur-nishing components for caravans, campers, bungalows, mobile homes, and boats. Thefirm quickly gained significant market shareand began to work with nearly all the Italianconstructors while forging important par-tnerships with famous foreign brands. Until2008, Borri produced complete interiors andsome accessories. Then, as the general eco-nomic recession began to bite, severalrecreational-vehicle manufacturers startedmaking the furniture in-house. The companyresponded by extending its specialist experti-se to include the production of preformeddoors in Corian, polyethylene and methacry-late while also focusing on making high-qua-lity wood accessories for top-of-the-rangeapplications. “Although our company can produce com-plete interiors”, says sales manager MassimoBartalini, “we have specialised in certaincomponents, concentrating our efforts oncreating laminated work surfaces, with bothhoneycomb and plywood, honeycombedpartitions with and without interior structu-re, curved furnishing components madeusing the preforming technique, structuralcomponents with both honeycombed andplywood panels, and on machining Corian,on its own or combined with other mate-rials”. As well as extending its product range, Borrihas strategically personalised its productionand shipping to suit any requirements. Itemsare made on request to the customer’s

design to a schedule that integrates with thecustomer’s own work programmes.Accordingly, the company has invested instaff training and special equipment whiledeveloping internal procedures to producefurnishing components even in small quanti-ties, thus facilitating a staggered delivery ser-vice tailored to suit the customer and athighly competitive quality and prices.“Compared to companies with more com-plex organisational structures and highlyautomated production processes, we cancarry out production runs even for smallvolumes”, continues Massimo Bartalini. “We

are a small firm with a factory spanning3000 sq m, with 15 employees and a tur-

A solution for every requirementBorri Srl is an Italian company specialising in supplying furniture, structural components, partitions, work sur-faces, acrylic-stone surfaces, and accessories for recreational vehicles. One of our strengths is that we can ful-fil small commissions, offering tailored production and delivery schedules to suit your business’s logisticalrequirements

nover of around 1.7 million euros. But ourstaff’s great experience, our long and establi-shed tradition in the sector, and our meticu-lous quality policy have enabled us to conso-lidate our presence in the industry and towork with virtually all the Italian constructors. We have also completed major projects withthe Spanish company Moncayo, the Englishfirm Auto Sleepers, and La Strada andWestfalia from Germany. For Westfalia, we

designed and built all the furniture for theColumbus caravan range in the late 1990s. Itis a partnership that has been a great sourceof pride and satisfaction”.Borri produces not only the furniture forrecreational vehicles but also personalisedfurnishings for the Italian municipal policevehicles and design elements for incorpora-tion in domestic furnishings, from bathroomfurniture to the famous Eames Lounge Chair.

B orri is a byword for flexibility. We can meet customer needs not just through thegreat variety of our products, created using an array of manufacturing techniques, but by tailoring deliveries to suit any logistical needs. Indeed, Borri has developed

a number of working methods. We present four examples below, although the Borritechnical office can work with any customer to tailor a personalised approach. - The “BLUE” method: here, for example, the raw materials to be kept in stock are agre-ed with the customer. Using the internet, Borri monitors the customer’s production sche-dule and produces the relevant articles in line with the approved plans. Borri stores theproducts in its warehouse and delivers them in sequence. In some cases, the products arepacked in special containers belonging to the customer in the order in which they will bepicked for assembly. - The “GREEN” method: after preparing an eight-week forecast based on the customer’sproduction, we then source the raw materials. The items for each confirmed order arethen produced. Deliveries are separated by order or batch. - The “YELLOW” method: orders are placed directly at 6–8 weeks. The raw materials arethen purchased, and orders are grouped together into production runs for delivery in bat-ches with specific packaging subdivided by assembly station.- The “ORANGE” method: orders are placed at 6 months, and raw materials are sourcedat regular intervals. The products are manufactured in batches and stored in the Borriwarehouse until needed by the customer, for delivery on demand.

Flexible production and delivery

O ne of the latest technologies that Borri has developed is themachining of acrylic stone, i.e. Corian and its substitutes. This material enables surfaces to be created without visible

joints; it is resistant to stains, scratches and mould; it is hygienic, non-toxic, non-porous, warm to the touch, strong, and easy to repair. It isused for kitchen surfaces, even those with integrated sink. Anotherfeather in the company’s cap is the pantograph with 5 axes for wor-king on curved furnishing components. Borri performs its own ben-

ding work in-house, making the moulds for bending lumber-core ply-wood panels or polystyrene honeycombed panels. A special bondingtechnique, known as Hot-Melt, also enables us to combine any typeof material: methacrylate and fibreglass for doors or linoleum; alumi-nium and fibreglass for panels acting as structural components. Hot-Melt is a bonding system using heat-melted polyurethane adhesiveswith high resistance to damp and requiring no time in the press forreticulation.

A leader for three generations in the production of hobs, sinks, ovens and other accessories for boats, the CAN companyfrom Brescia turned to the caravanning sector five years ago,

with an array of beautifully designed, innovative products. CAN’sCrystal range, for instance, has won immediate favour among seve-ral camper manufacturers, which appreciated the good looks andsuperior practicality of these elegant hobs in scratch-resistant tou-ghened glass. “The Crystal range has been our breakthrough into themarket,” says CAN co-owner Lorenzo Bellini. “The smoked-glass sur-face combines with the stainless-steel elements to create an irresisti-

ble marriage that has set the stan-dard in the nautical sector and

has been immediately apprecia-ted in the camper world, too.Today, many manufacturershave chosen this solution, making the most of ourexpertise and flexibility todesign custom kitchens inspecial forms, sizes and,

when possible, evencolours.” CAN now supplies

nearly all the Italian campermakers (Rimor, Pla,

Roller Team, Elnagh,Mobilvetta, Arca,G o t t i l i n e ,Kentucky, andWingamm) along

with others fromoverseas (Knaus,

Adria, Rapido, Itineo,Westfalia, Reimo, Dethleffs,Eura Mobil, and Ace Caravans). It broke into the camper marketin 2008 at Düsseldorf fair andwon over professional custo-mers straight away. Whatimpressed was not onlythe original productdesign but also thequality of the com-ponents: thicker glass,stainless-steel features, robust hin-ges, copper tubes, precise and reliable ther-mocouples, and high-power burners (up to 3000Watt). “What sets us apart from our competitors,” continues LorenzoBellini, “is that we can supply hobs in very unusual shapes and sizes. One example is the Hoodiny range of recessed steel hobs, where theround model with single burner, the FC1345, is the only one on themarket that, with a diameter of just 34 cm, features a semi-rapidburner with toughened smoked-glass cover and concealed hinges. Itis very popular in convertible vans and multipurpose vehicles, as is theFL1323, the most compact model in our new Randi line. At just 53cm wide, it offers a flush hob with burner and integral round sink. This is the model that Reimo has chosen for its latest vehicle unvei-led at the last CMT show in Stuttgart. Now with the new Crystal hobdesigned for Trigano S.p.a. – equipped with two burners, one withtwo rings – we have succeeded once again in standing out from thecrowd with innovative ideas and products combining reliability, prac-ticality and design.”CAN’s is a fine all-Italian success story. In 2009, the company intro-duced the caravanning sector to the hob with toughened-glass base, which was already common in the world of boating, and made it amust-have for many manufacturers. CAN has started a quiet revolu-tion in our sector, setting new standards in kitchens for recreationalvehicles of all sizes.

CAN sets the standardCAN, the producer of sinks and hobs for caravans and boats, has quietly taken the industry by storm with itspioneering glass hobs, now a must for many, in the form of its “Crystal” range

Turning two burnersinto three

I n an exclusive for Trigano S.p.a., CAN has created a hob inthe Crystal range with a unique feature: a double-ring bur-ner. In this solution, the hob occupies the same space as a

two-burner arrangement while actually providing three: onesemi-rapid (medium) independent burner and one dual-ringburner comprising a (large) rapid burner and an auxiliary (small)one, usable separately or together. This configuration thus pro-vides two burners of different sizes and powers or, when usedtogether, a total power of 4200 Watt, adding the rapid burne-r’s 3200 Watt to the 1000 Watt auxiliary. This innovative hob was designed exclusively for the Roller TeamMagnifico Garage TL and CI Sinfonia Garage XT models, madein Italy by Trigano S.p.a. Like the other models in the Crystalrange, it features a black scratch-resistant toughened-glass sur-face with the burners set in it. For this project, CAN had to workwith suppliers in the domestic sector, for no double-ring-burnersolution is available in either the nautical or the caravanning sec-tors. But the new burners were not designed for installation invehicles, and the covers were not self-locking. CAN has therefo-re redesigned the pan supports in stainless steel so that they notonly hold up the pans but also, on this new model, keep thecover and ring in place with four pins to prevent movement. Thisnew hob measures 600 x 350 cm with 8-mm-thick toughenedglass.

T he PC 180 is CBE’s new entry-level control panel with LEDindicators. PC 180 takes all the established functionality ofthe LED panels and adds some interesting new features, like

the twilight sensor that automatically controls the LEDs’ brightnessaccording to the ambient light level. “Recreational vehicles with adju-stable-height front beds have been very popular for several years”,says Paolo Moiola, CBE export sales manager. “At night, though, when the bed is down, the person sleeps in line with the controlpanel over the door. Like this, the illuminated LEDs can be irksome.Yet the control panel must show that it is working and must reportany devices in use. That is why we have added a twilight sensor(which can be turned off manually, if necessary) to automatically turndown the LEDs and eliminate any possible nuisance – an especiallyuseful feature as modern LEDs’ brightness and performance continueto grow. What’s more, we have slightly expanded the LED displayscale for a more precise readout. But the main developments concernthe new design that has certainly given the product a more modern, attractive look and feel while, above all, affording a vastly superiorend-user experience. The buttons, for example, are backlit and workmechanically, thus, unlike the membrane buttons, providing a tactile,high-quality feel as well as greater durability”. Unveiled last year at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the PC 180 is justthe first in a new range of control panels designed by CBE to bringOEM customers a complete set of products with the same family feelfrom entry level through to the top of the range. All models have thesame outer dimensions, and the various versions also have similar topand bottom strips to house the buttons. The difference lies in thecentral area, which has been conceived to enable different solutions:LED indicators, monochrome LCD displays, and higher-spec color

LCD displays, some withtouch screen. Future developmentsmay include new con-trol panels with electro-nic touch-sensitivecapacitive switches. Thenew design would sup-port that, since the con-trol-panel body is now asingle piece, unlike theold main body with anouter frame coveringthe screw heads. That isbecause, with PC 180,the fixing screws have been replaced by two springs that hold it inplace by applying forces inside the hole on the portion of wall abovethe entrance door. As a result, the product now looks much betterand is also simpler and quicker for the manufacturer to install. “PC 180 is the foundation of a new family of products,” continuesPaolo Moiola. “In the caravanning sector, with its low productionvolumes, it is not worth investing in developing a dedicated industrialdesign for a single model. PC 180, soon to be joined by the PC 280and PC 380, features an original, contemporary design that certainlyhas the flexibility to suit a wide spectrum of professional customerswith divergent needs. The finishing on the button strips can be custo-mized, and it is available in rubberized, textured rubberized, or poli-shed effects. And, of course, the unit can be supplied with persona-lized silk-screening and colors. The buttons, meanwhile, have CBE’shallmark icons and symbols. We have chosen this approach toemphasize a sense of continuity with the corporate identity even insuch highly innovative products as these.” PC 180 is backwards compatible with the LED control panels thatCBE has produced and sold in recent years. It can be installed as anaftermarket solution by enlarging the mounting hole.

F rom late 2013, two new accessories will be availa-ble to manage and control CBE photovoltaicsystems: the PRS 300 load regulator and the PT

642 test panel. The new PRS 300 can operate at up to maximum powerof 300 watt, making it possible to choose the charge linenot just for gel and lead batteries, as in the older models, but also for the now-widespread AGM batteries. But thisthird charge line is not the new regulator’s only innovativefeature. Indeed, the PRS 300 has been developed withtechnology that enables the photovoltaic modules to operate at higher output. In testa-ment to this approach, the heat sink has been completely removed, as it was no lon-ger necessary. The regulator has the same shape, size and appearance as the earlier PRS240 model, except that it is black (not

grey), and it has silver (not white) silk-screening. Warning information is provided in thisversion once again by LEDs, which look the same as in the previous model but offer anextra function. Along with the standard LEDs indicating battery recharge at maximumcurrent until full-charge voltage, maintenance phase at constant voltage, and alarm forincorrect electrical connections, there is a new LED to indicate “solar on”, so users cansee that the installation has been completed properly, even when the sun is not out.Meanwhile, we have also given a brand new look to the innovative PT 642 test panel, the cornerstone of a new product range with digital displays and touch technology. Ithas an LCD display showing both the battery voltage in volts and the photovoltaicmodule’s instantaneous charge current in amperes, at the same time. And with thetouch technology, all it takes is a light touch to activate the test panel and bring up thedata display. The PT 642 test panel can be used also with the Modular Plates range; inparticular, it can be personalized with different color frames.

panel and the 12V distribution box for the two new mid-rangeWestfalia MPVs that will receive their world premiere at theGerman fair. “We are delighted to launch this partnership with ahistoric marque with an excellent worldwide reputation,” com-ments Bruno Conci, CBE managing director. “Our aim is also towork closely together on the cabling and on designing the electri-cal systems. But our primary concern now is to fulfill the require-ments and meet the needs of the German manufacturer professio-nally and efficiently”.

C TA Srl has 35years experien-ce in the auto-

motive sector supplyingnational and interna-tional companies in themanufacture of seat-belt anchoring structu-res, seat swivels, LCDTV brackets, rear lad-ders and carriers, all incompliance withEuropean safety stan-dards. CTA Srl, with its

innovative seatbeltanchoring systems, has

worked tirelessly in meetingthe needs and expectations of RV manufacturers across Europe. Thecontinued improvements in the manufacturing process ofRecreational Vehicles which has taken place in the last few yearshas improved the quality of the final product and expanded produc-tion. These are the two main reasons that have led CTA Srl to rese-arch, develop and design an improved innovative seatbelt ancho-ring system. The return on this hard work has been: shorter leadtimes, lower installation costs, less weight and greater mechanicalresistance. The new seatbelt anchoring structures have been adapted for alltypes of Recreational Vehicles: camper vans, motor homes, semiintegrated and integrated RV. For those vehicles with double floors, where there can be a height variation of between 8.5 and 50 cm.between the chassis and the interior floor of the cabin, the newseatbelt anchoring system has also been adapted. To compensatefor this height differential, the manufacturer now has the ability toobtain the necessary additional components to anchor the structu-re to the main body. Theseatbelt anchoring structu-res are delivered with thedimensions adapted forimmediate installation.

T he project, commissioned by Truma, is aimed at installing the Combi at the center of thevehicle, thus maximizing the distribution of channeled hot air, which is often dispersedbecause the heater is usually installed in a very decentralized position, such as garage peaks,

in the compartments behind the double beds in the back, and at the basis of the closet in the tail;this position also makes more stowage space available.

That’swhy we have invested heavily in developingproducts that combine quality and reliabilitywith high esthetic appeal inspired by classicItalian design at its best”. The Magic lockshave been developed with a dual lockingmechanism for recreational-vehicle doors. When the door closes, the first stage kicks in,holding the door shut. The door is now loc-ked, but it can be made doubly secure. When the handle is lowered, a barrel withrotating components clicks into place, pushing the door even tighter against theinternal frame for a truly firm closure. TheFAP factory spans an area of 4,000 sq m.The company employs 15 people across itsproduction departments, computerizedwarehouse, technical office with advanceddesign systems, and quality-control depar-tment. “My grandfather started the businessin 1968, prompted by two Italian entrepre-neurs whom he met on a campsite: Luano

Niccolai, owner of Rimor, andGiovambattista Moscardini, founder of Laika. The freshly established FAP began to makeaerators for these two celebrated Italiancaravan manufacturers”, recounts LapoErmini. “In 1977, my father took over thereins, transforming the company from asmall workshop into a major European pla-yer; in 2002, I joined the managementmyself. I am striving to follow in my prede-cessors’ footsteps, steering the firm towardsuccess despite the depression afflicting theItalian market. Fortunately, the sector hasseen the value of our offering and, thus far,has always rewarded us”. FAP obtained UNIEN ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2003. Thecompany has been active not only in thecaravanning industry but also, since 1982, inthe railway sector, making furnishing compo-nents for the main European manufacturers.

duct ranges isOrus Line, a col-lection ofm o d e r n ,a t t r a c t i v e l ydesigned fillersand externalinlets for cam-pers and cara-vans. The com-mon family feelis created by thecap and frame, which are available invarious colors, inclu-ding a transparent plasticversion. The filler with auto-mobile-style friction cap is uniquein the industry. Ideal for both the drin-king-water tank and any additionalfuel tanks, it features a screw guide forthe friction cap, which takes effectwhen fully screwed in, and a system tomake the handle turn idly once locked. The friction sound indicates that thecap has been screwed in correctly, while the idle rotation protects thetank contents and the cap itself bydeterring thieves. The cap also has ananti-fall cord and a socket to hold it tothe flap during refilling. Another exclu-sive feature of Orus Line by FAP is thefiller with an adapter enabling the useof diesel tank caps, including a dedica-ted version for the original Fiat caps. This solution is particularly useful tomotorhome manufacturers, whosefuel-tank fillers must comply withvarious legal standards in case vehiclesoverturn. Orus Line overcomes the pro-blem by enabling the manufacturer’soriginal filler and cap to be used. OrusLine includes external sockets for con-necting the gas supply, a quick connec-tion for water with a pressure reducerand check valve, a 230-V / 16-A exter-nal electric socket, and a quick connec-tor for the external shower. The multi-purpose system includes a useful 220-V Shuko socket, sockets for digital ter-restrial TV and satellite dish, and a 12-V socket. All home comforts can beenjoyed under the veranda, too.Another interesting feature is theoption to buy the cover as an aftermar-ket part if it should break during aclumsy maneuver or when mishandled.

Project 2000 presents the 3D bedProject 2000 presents the new 12658 bed, an innovative multipurpose central bed that combines as many asthree different mechanisms in one structure

T hrough Project 2000’s long experience of developing bed-lifting mechanisms, the company’s designers have created an innovative concept of an adjustable-height central bed. The new 12658 perfectly embodies the concept of “ideas

in motion”, which is not only Project 2000’s slogan but also its corporate mission: get-ting ideas moving. The new bed features a self-supporting structure of adjustable height. The lower partcan be lifted to access the storage compartment below; the upper part raises to act asa backrest. The fruit of in-depth design and development work to combine the liftingmechanisms with lightweight materials and a robust structure, the 12658 is the firstcentral bed in the sector to combine as many as three mechanisms in just one structu-re. Project 2000 had already created an original electrically controlled folding mecha-nism for the central bed in the TDL (Tecnoform Design Lab) caravan exhibited at the2012 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, which won the “Best Interior Design” and “BestPractice” categories in the prestigious Caravaning Design Awards 2012/2013. Now wehave gone further. The 12658 is primarily a very lightweight bed with a self-supportingstructure, weighing only 45 kg despite the system’s complexity. This means that cam-per and caravan manufacturers do not need to give the bed structural support – becau-se it supports itself. The bed’s height off the floor can be adjusted by around 305 mmvia a manual or electric mechanism. Thus, an ample storage compartment can beexploited under the bed during transit, without compromising on the comfort andaccessibility of a low bed when the vehicle is parked. The lower part of the bed basefolds open to an angle of around 114 degrees, allowing quick and easy access to thestorage area beneath. The final masterstroke is the facility to raise the backrest into oneof five fixed positions, by moving the bed base back at the same time along an appro-ximately 220-mm run. This motion is enabled via the Project Easy Lift mechanism, whichmakes it possible to calibrate the system’s resistance to the thrust applied to move backthe headboard. We can therefore establish, based on the mattress weight and the forceused, how much resistance the system will apply before moving backwards, thus raisingthe headboard. The ability to raise the headboard affords superior comfort, as users canadjust their position to read or watch television with ease. And moving back the bedcreates space in the bedroom, thus making it easier to move around. Project 2000 sup-plies the 12658 system pre-assembled; manufacturers need only install it on the pre-bored floor.

New user-friendly control unit

Stepping up

A s part of its continual product-improvement programme, Project 2000 has introduced a newversion of its electronic control panels for the 12600 range of height-adjustment systems forbeds, featuring significant changes to both hardware and software.

The new control panel has an automatic reset facility after an error. This new feature makes thesystem simpler for end users, who will no longer be forced to perform a manual reset by entering apre-programmed key sequence. The new control panel not only provides automatic reset in case of error, it also reports the fault typevia LEDs that flash according to predefined codes.

As with all Project 2000 updates, the control unit is fully backwards compatible and can be fitted simply by completing the electrical connec-tions, with no need for any kind of overhaul. Because the new model includes hardware changes, the software in older versions of the con-trol unit cannot be updated to the new functionality. The new panel, called Top Line Bed Lifting Plus and Pro Bed Lifting Plus, is fitted to allnew bed systems from 1 June 2013. It can be identified through the code on the back near the connector input; a new graphical design ison the way.

P roject 2000 asked a specialist quality-certification company to put our electro-nic height-adjuster device for beds through its paces. They subjected it to a bat-tery of strength, safety and reliability tests. The 12600 system came through

successfully and has gained certification. The various tests included loading the structu-re – a system of belts controlled by a sophisticated gearmotor – to 1300 kg. The power-ful gearmotor demonstrated remarkable mechanical strength, and the robust oversizedgears sustained no damage. To ensure the system’s safety and reliability, Project 2000has replicated the load test in-house, where ten employees jumped onto the structure, which stood up to it safely. Our photograph shows the group standing on a bed sup-ported by the 12600 device.

P roject 2000 has made a series of technical enhancements to its products, includingsome bestsellers, notably the 10574 and 10577 electronic-steps models with 2footboards and foldaway action, and the 3-footboard model 10576. The innova-

tion of greatest interest to end users is doubtless that the arm joining the steps has nowbeen replaced by a carefully devised and sized spring. This new feature, introduced as partof our process of continually improving our products, helps to prevent damage to the ste-p’s rotating mechanism caused by standing on the footboards when the steps are not fullyopen. Project 2000’s steps are fitted as original equipment on recreational vehicles all overthe world and are the result of a precise and continually evolving design process. Top-quality materials; industrialised production pro-cesses; precise, robust and perfectly synchronised mechanisms; superior electronic components: all this, and more, is what you canexpect from every set of Project 2000–brand automatic steps. Although nothing has been left to chance, and the revamp was quick andstraightforward, the definitive solution is now here to make the steps even easier to use. The end users are sure to like it.

Project 2000 presents its new corporate video

A fter launching its new website at the start of the year, Project 2000 is also presentingits wares through a high-definition corporate video, which can be seen on www.pro-ject-2000.it. This communication tool enables private and professional customers

alike to become better acquainted with the Project 2000 brand. The video begins by presen-ting an array of solutions, from height-adjustment systems for beds to television holders andelectric steps, plus other ingenious automated mechanisms that the company has developedin partnership with or to order for several camper manufacturers. The spotlight then falls onthe fine Italian success story of Davide Nardini, who started up this entrepreneurial adventu-re driven by a passion for camper touring and by the desire to improve the practical and fun-ctional aspects of various components, especially the steps. The video presents the variousproduction stages, from the order to design, from machining the metals to assembly, culmi-nating in packing and shipping. Produced in both Italian and English, it will also be shown at the forthcoming trade fairs in Düsseldorfand Parma, where visitors can see with their own eyes how Project 2000’s products take shape.

S R Mecatronic is an Italian companyestablished in 2008 that produces andsells automatic-tracking satellite

dishes. Sole director Marco Santoli has twodecades of experience in designing mechani-cal and electronic devices. Although the busi-ness is still young, it has grown fast throughcareful and effective industrial and commer-cial management. Today, SR Mecatronic pro-ducts are distributed Europe-wide. The com-pany’s continental service network is traineddirectly by the company’s technicians wor-king with the international distributors. Andas of 2013, Italian-brand satellite dishes canbe found throughout New Zealand andAustralia. “We are the newest player in the arena, andwe have done it with a product that is muchmore technologically advanced than the exi-sting offerings. And at a lower price”, com-ments owner Marco Santoli. “For example,we use a DVB-S2 Full HD tuner for the satel-lite tracking. This component gives us extra-ordinarily sensitive signal reception, even onthe edges of the footprint, and high data-transmission speeds. In other words, ourcustomers can watch television even at theNorth Cape (with a medium-sized dish),where the signal is very weak; in effect, our

best advertising is the buzzfrom our users. What’s more, with the Full HD system, ourdishes are already primed forfuture developments: whentelevision broadcasts becomeavailable in Full HD, our custo-mers will not need to replacetheir positioner to updatetheir tracking system”.SR Mecatronic’s top priority isproduct quality. We select thebest suppliers, designing andtesting our products using the

best hardware and software technologies, oversizing our components for their intendeduse. SR Mecatronic dishes use an especiallyrobust mechanism built with die-cast, pow-der-coated aluminum and supported by apowerful motor that transmits the motion tocemented and hardened steel worms withbronze gears. The quality of the componentsand their machining ensures that the satelli-te tracking is accurate, stable over time, andmaintenance-free.“We are proud that our return rate due todefects is as low as 1%. This is attributable toour constant, continual focus on enhancingour products – we don’t scrimp on the qua-lity of our components; on the contrary, weinvest in reliability,” continues Marco Santoli.“Indeed, our motors use windshield-wiper-motor technology, not its electric-windowcounterpart, unlike other products on themarket. These motors are designed for con-tinual operation, robustness and safety. Weare the only producer that lacquers its circuitboards. This precaution may not be strictlyessential, because the boards are protectedby a waterproof shell, but it can be useful inorder to ensure longevity, in case accidentaldamage to the cover should let in moisture.Furthermore, our covers are resistant to UVrays and are of above average thickness. Wehave recently replaced our LNB because of afault rate of 1% on that component. It maynot seem all that high, but for us – havinghad to change just two motors and oneswitch in four years of production – it is asignificant figure. And so, four months ago,we selected an even more reliable, higher-performance new LNB that operates at noiselevels of just 0.1 DB, half that of its predeces-

Leading the market for 4 yearsWith its innovative high-tech satellite dishes, the Italian firm SR Mecatronic has made its mark on the dome-stic and European markets and is now set to break new ground

T his dish is equipped with a special motorized supportto rotate the LNB automatically when the integratedGPS detects the need to automatically correct the

polarity (skew correction). This function increases the satelli-te coverage and, therefore, the signal quality even at themargins of the satellite footprint. The mean satellite-searchtime is 30–60 seconds, while it takes only 5–10 seconds tomove from one satellite to another. The offset dish has a NID-recognition automatic-searchsystem and can work with 15 satellites set up via the displayversion of the panel.

sor. We are always looking for ways to fur-ther improve our products. Accordingly, wehave made a significant investment in deve-loping a new mix for self-lubricating seals. Ineffect, without regular lubrication, the oldseals were apt to squeak. It was merely acosmetic problem, a minor audible irritant, but the new solution has enabled us to elimi-nate it”.The high-quality dish body is complementedby the range of control systems whose basicversion (for single-satellite reception) inclu-des a recently redesigned box. It entails avery slender (19-cm), easily positioned boxwith a single button to automatically openand close the dish, making the system extre-mely easy to operate even for users without

electronics knowledge. The system is simpleto implement, all at once or in stages, cour-tesy of the two control panels: one with LEDsfor managing up to 7 satellites, one with atwo-line, 16-character backlit display formanaging up to 15. “When determining SR Mecatronic’s busi-ness strategy, I rely not only on my longexperience as a project manager in majormultinational household-appliance manufac-turers but also on my experiences as a cam-per user”, continues Marco Santoli. “My ideaof a holiday is a time of absolute relaxation, where everything must work to perfection. And if it doesn’t, then the customer servicemust be swift and impeccable. That’s whywe have taken meticulous care over our

after-sales service, setting up service centersthroughout Europe with a master center inStrasbourg and a dedicated multilingualcustomer-service number for end users andprofessionals. Our dishes drop off our radaronly when the customer disposes of them.Until then, we hold ourselves responsible fortheir effective operation”. As regards OEMapplications, SR Mecatronic is already wor-king in harness with several European cam-per manufacturers. Our technical office isavailable to look into specific original-equip-ment needs, offering cabling of the right sizefor any application, personalized silk-scree-ning and (logistics permitting) even a pre-assembled dish supply service to reduce themanufacturer’s installation time and costs.

T ecnoled has begun to propose ledlighting systems in 2005 and hasimmediately focused its own efforts

in a constant improvement of the product, asa result of careful researches aimed to followthe led evolution technology. In addition toproduct improvements, rigorous process andproduction costs optimizations have beencarried out, obtaining an important retailprice containment. This is not a small matter, especially in the face of this difficult econo-mic situation, with the market in great diffi-culty and customers that are not only moreand more exigent and expert but also kee-ping a watchful eye on prices. The employed Led are always of last genera-tion, the state of the art available on themarket, carefully selected so that high per-formances and constancy of output aregranted. Thanks to these credentials Tecnoled clearlydistinguishes itself from conventional impor-ters who do not possess the know-how nee-ded to carry out evaluations and selections ofused LEDs; their strategy is therefore simplybased upon searching suppliers offering verylow prices. In contrast to halogen lamps, that don't havemeaningful differences among the differentvarieties available on the market, the led aresophisticated components and they can haveconsiderable differences in terms of qualityand reliability according to their origin.A perfect example is the Micropower Led

case, the new technology created by theJapanese giant Citizen Electronics and usedby Tecnoled since the last season, represen-

ting today the benchmark for led qualitylighting, luminosity level and duration.By now quality and reliability are universally

Tecnoled makes the difference“Between led and led, Tecnoled makes the difference” it’s a slogan coined in 2005 and even more valid today,in a market assaulted by low quality products. Tecnoled distinguishes itself thanks to quality, reliability andability to interpret, through inside technical team, every demand of OEM setting up. During Caravan Salonthe new C.O.P. (Configurator OEM Products) will be introduced as a world premiere: a software that allowsto choose components and characteristics to assemble the proper ideal lighting product

New external lamps range

T ecnoled introduces the new external lamps range composed by fourmodels with different lengths. These lamps are equipped with SMD Ledtechnology, with transparent or frosted screen, silver or white finishing.

Three models have the eaves function. They are designed to be installed over doorsand van sliding doors and, thanks to the gutter, they help to let out rain water onthe sides instead of dribbling water into openings. This new range meets Tecnoledproducts high quality standards. During development of this new project particu-lar attention has been dedicated to material specifications, especially regardingwhite plastic terminals, for white lamps, by using ASA instead of ABS. Acrylonitrilestyrene acrylate material is a SAN copolymer with a great toughness and rigidity, good chemical resistance and thermal stability, outstanding resistance to weather, aging and yellowing, and high gloss. Thanks to this solution the new white exter-nal lamps are not affected by UV rays action, as usually happen with ABS products.

recognized and also Leisure VehiclesManufacturers, that in past were focused tothe Chinese market because of the extreme-ly low prices, are now directing more andmore toward Tecnoled products.Indeed, as the price chase is finished, wenoticed that it’s very important to trustserious and skilled partner, able to supportthe customer in any moment, not only at thetime of purchase.«2012 has been very important for us as wecommitted ourselves again to improve andto offer to our customers products 100%managed by Tecnoled – Alberto Saini, one ofthe owners, says – this means that immedia-te interventions on any kind of problem canbe carried out and to indulge customer onmany technical variations. Furthermore wehave invested on an internal management

very attentive to the needs of the markets. For example we have decreased deliverytimes for continuous working relations. We have invested large sums to industrializeour products to be produced in our premises. The last investments have been used to pro-duce molds for ABS injection and for alumi-num profiles extrusion. In this way we are contributing not only toour company development, but also to thelocal economic one: Italian, indeedEuropean».Tecnoled cast-iron principles are valid for allproducts, also the after-market ones, whereis really important to count on quality arti-cles, made with state of the art technologies, granting reliability and duration.Very important, in this case, is the uniqueselection made by Tecnoled: it means an

accurate choice to obtain a constant lightcolor between different products of thesame range, even bought in differentperiods. This is a very important aspect to be conside-red and really appreciated by Leisure VehiclesManufacturers. A great attention must be given also to theelectronic control circuits project, that incheap products especially the ones made inChina, have great limits causing interferen-ces with on board electronic devices, as TV,due to a non-optimal electromagnetic com-patibility.Furthermore some other aspects regardinglow quality in design and manufacturing ofelectronic circuits are: functionality, durationand working temperature, usually too highfor the led technology (one of the strengthsin led technology is the low working tempe-rature); all this may undercut the compo-nents reliability.Tecnoled product are CE certified fulfillingthe EC standards for their entire life, fromthe design to the production, from the pla-cing on the market to their usage and waste. These certifications are made by specializedlabs and involve financial outlays, but it’s anadded value to be explained also to the finalcustomer.

Tecnoled introduces the configurator

C onsidering the technical variations flexibility on the entire range of products andto offer the maximum customization for OEM orders Tecnoled introduces a newand simple instrument: C.O.P Configurator OEM Products. It is a new interacti-

ve catalogue concept, an innovative instrument that give the possibility “to build” themost congenial product for Leisure Vehicles Manufacturers necessities. There are so many Tecnoled products developed during the years that is almost impos-sible to collect them in a traditional catalogue.Through this software, that will be periodically updated, manufacturers have the possi-bility to constantly know Tecnoled products evolution. The C.O.P. will be introduced for the first time in Düsseldorf 2013 Caravan Salon.

C ompact, efficient, reliable – this is therecipe for success of the TrumaCombi heater. It cleverly combines

heating and warm water in one device andhas been the best-selling heating device forcaravans ad motorcaravans for years. NowTruma has launched a new Combi genera-tion: The Truma Combi CP plus with a digitalLCD control panel. It offers much greateroperating ease and a large array of new fun-ctions that ensure you a pleasant climate inyour vehicle. The focus here is the newdisplay, which can be operated intuitivelythanks to the central control button. "Thisturn and press controller, which is used tocontrol the menu and select settings, comesfrom the automotive sector for example innavigation systems," explains product mana-ger Nadja Hazzam. "We coo-perated with best-agerswhen developing the newdisplay and have focused onensuring that the figures andsymbols displayed are largeand clearly legible, and thatthe brightness can be set tomeet the user's require-ments."It is now possible to set theroom temperature precisely –in 1°C steps. "Instead of, asin the past, setting the heater to level 3 (cor-responds to approx. 22°C), you can nowselect 22°C precisely on the control panel.Another advantage: It is possible to calibratethe heater's temperature sensor on the con-trol panel thereby achieving exactly the tem-perature you want even more precisely."Depending on where it is installed, it thetemperature sensor may measure a differenttemperature, possibly a few degrees colder, than inside the vehicle. You can compensatethis difference easily by calibrating the tem-perature sensor and setting the room clima-te to meet your own warmth needs or thesize of your vehicle,"says Nadja Hazzam. The new fan output of the Truma Combi CPplus can also be set individually allowingmore convenience and comfort. "The custo-mer can choose between the levels Eco,High, Boost and the circulating air functionVent on the display, thereby allowing a quie-ter, power-saving or higher-performance

heating level." The boost function in particu-lar heats up the room 15% more quicklyensuring a pleasant room climate in no time. There is also a boost function for the boilerthat allows fast targeted heating of the

water. With the water boost function, thepriority lies on the heating up of the waterduring 40 minutes. This guarantees longershowers with shorter waiting times. All con-venience functions can be set easily and con-

Retrofit option Truma CP plus

M ore operating ease, more individuality, a more pleasant climate: the newTruma Combi heater stands out thanks to the many new functions and bene-fits. Customers with existing Truma Combi devices in their vehicles do not

need to go without this added comfort: Truma now offers a retrofit option that can beused to upgrade all Combi heater series produced since 2007. "All that you need to dois fit the CP plus control panel and exchange the control unit PCB of the heater,"explains project manager Stephan Koch. The customer can obtain the new LCD displayTruma CP plus including a 12 V connection and a 6 m control panel cable from our dea-lers. The PCB is not included in the package, this is replaced directly by the Truma dea-ler or service partner. "This is to ensure that the installation is carried out by a profes-sional and that the heater works correctly".

veniently thanks to the new timer. "For example, you can programthe reduction of the temperature at night or the water boost onehour before you need to get up. This ensures a perfect room tempe-rature at night for sleeping and immediate warm water for your mor-ning shower," says Hazzam. The new Truma heater also has otherbenefits: Thanks to the LCD display, it is easier to diagnose problems."Flash codes have been replaced with error codes comprising lettersand digits to facilitate troubleshooting." And that is not all: TheTruma Aventa and Saphir air conditioning units can also be control-led via the new display. "We have bundled all heating and coolingfunctions of the Truma devices into one central control panel," saysHazzam. All-in-all a successful package for more convenience, indi-viduality and comfort in recreational vehicles. The new Truma CombiCP plus is available as a gas heater (Combi 4 and 6), as a gas/electroversion (Combi 4 E und 6 E) and diesel heater. In addition to theCombi D 6, there is now, for the first time, a model with an electri-cal rod that allows heating either with diesel or power or a mixtureof both.

Pioneering change The Italian-based multinational Vetroresina S.p.A. is launching a range of innovative products: from non-slipfiberglass laminate to embossed-effect laminate and Warm Glass, a panel with carbon fiber immersed in theresin for floor-heating applications

[email protected]

V etroresina is attending theDüsseldorf fair for the fifteenth yearrunning, with a substantial range of

solutions for wall and floor coverings forcampers and caravans using panels made offiberglass and composite materials. This year, the company – which also hasmanufacturing bases in the USA and Brazil –is showing a new kind of fiberglass panelcreated via a special production techniquethat yields a rough non-slip finish. This appli-cation is well-suited both for internal camperfloor coverings and for making walls, e.g. inmobile homes. It is a laminate that can besupplied in any color and finish, with orwithout gelcoat, according to use. If emplo-yed internally, no gelcoat is necessary, thussignificant weight and cost savings can beachieved. Vetroresina’s efforts to developnew techniques for working with the glassfiber have led to another interesting feature:an embossed finish. This design is very popu-lar on caravans in the form of the 0.4- / 0.5-mm aluminum sheet, which gives an attrac-tive appearance despite its thinness. Theembossed-finish fiberglass maintains thesame visual effect on the outer wall whileoffering benefits typical of this material: it iseasy to repair, has low thermal conductivity, and is hail-resistant. “This past year, we haveseen an increase in demand for fiberglass

laminates for use on the lower part of thecamper floors”, says Simone Colombarini, sole director of Vetroresina S.p.A. “Ourpanels are effective replacements for plywo-od at comparable cost, because they do notrequire a gelcoat finish, while they are fullywaterproof and help to enhance the insula-tion. For recreational-vehicle floors, we canalso supply a highly innovative product thatis steadily gaining a foothold: Vetrostyle PVC.This is a fiberglass laminate for covering theupper part of the floor. We make it using anexclusive production technique, with the PVCfinish pre-bonded. This solution offers abalanced panel that overcomes various pro-blems due both to the different behaviors ofthe adhesives and to the tendency of plywo-od – unlike fiberglass – to absorb moisture”. With Vetrostyle PVC, manufacturers can laythe finished covering without having to waitfor the PVC to bond. But time savings are notthe only benefit. Vetroresina S.p.A. worksdirectly with the PVC producers to optimizecosts and to spare recreational-vehicle manu-facturers the bother of sourcing the PVC,which is supplied in a limited set of standardwidths that are often larger than you reallyneed. The company has focused on obtai-ning a more flexible PVC supply, thus elimi-nating or drastically reducing waste. Anothermajor innovation to be unveiled at

Düsseldorf Caravan Salon is our Warm Glasstechnology. “Some manufacturers havebegun to add heating elements between theplywood and the PVC for a floor-heatingfacility. In this scenario, our Vetrostyle PVCcannot be used”, continues SimoneColombarini. “So we have developed atechnology that allows us to embed the hea-ting system in the resin. We have created alaminate, now patented, with integral car-bon fibers replacing some of the glass fibers. Our tests have proved it very effective. And itis straightforward for the manufacturers, asthey need only connect the terminals to theelectrical system. Now the challenge facingus, to optimize the production process, is toinsert the carbon fiber through a length of60 meters, which is the standard size of ourmoulds. But we are well on the way”.Even though the company continues todevelop pioneering, highly innovative pro-ducts, it is encountering resistance to thetake-up of concepts that some find new oreven revolutionary in a sector where traditio-nal construction approaches die hard. Takeinternal wall coverings, for example, wherefew producers are yet willing to abandondear old plywood. And yet fiberglass lamina-te offers real benefits: for instance, it is sup-plied as a single, ready-finished panel.Hence, bonding the decorations becomes a

Page 23: Aboutcamp BtoB - n. 4

thing of the past, as do the problems of theinevitable joins. But fiberglass’s insulatingand waterproofing properties are also wellworth considering. Indeed, plywood absorbsmoisture. Although it removes humidity from

the air and minimizes condensation, it tran-sfers part of the damp to the internal woo-den structure, which in the long run mayspoil the wood itself. “While floor coverings are starting to gain inpopularity among manufacturers, the samecannot be said for internal wall coverings”,Colombarini goes on. “And yet we havesome excellent solutions. Vetrostyle, forexample, combines the fiberglass panel witha decorative paper covering. This eliminatesjoints, removes the need to bond the paperlater, saves assembly time, and reduces laborand adhesive costs. Fiberglass is a very usefulchoice for the inside of the walls, too. Thissolution is already in use, involving an opa-que finish that can be produced in any colorwith no need for gelcoat. Without gelcoat, which is unnecessary since the internal wallsare not exposed to UV radiation, you savenot only money but also weight. Generally, infact, the gelcoat weighs around 400 gramsper square meter of resin. By not using thismaterial, we can obtain a laminate that, at1.2 mm, is 20% thinner”.

B egun in 1968, Vetroresina pro-duces laminates in reinforced

polyester resin with glass fibre. Thelarge operative capacity of the com-pany is the result of careful researchcarried out in the sector of plywoodmaterials associated with the studyand continuous improvement of thetechnologies of the work process. Inorder to maintain and raise the pro-ductive standard Vetroresina hasorganized substantial investments, and thanks to the contribution ofadvanced technologies and of thestrict collaboration with universitiesand experts in the sector it was ableto welcome the variations and newneeds of the market. The high technological level associa-ted with a particular attention toaesthetics and materials have givenplace to a diversification of productsextending the range and fields of application. Vetroresina has aproductive capacity of 129 piecesper day and extends over an area of46,000 square meters. In June2000 Vetroresina opened an establi-shment in San Paolo, Brazil, fromwhich it can face the needs of theSouth American market and fromMay 2008 the company is proud toinclude a new productive site in theUS where it can focus its energy tomanaging the North American mar-ket.

Market and Trends

S Historically the land of low-profiles, which were popular thereas far back as the early 1980s, France is now the second mostimportant market in Europe. Recreational-vehicle customers

are typically couples, often retired folk, who do not need many bedsbut favour a comfortable sleeping area and related services. Amongthe first to offer proper bedrooms, French vehicles cover nearly alltypes. Despite a dearth of overcabs, there are interesting designs forcampervans and motorhomes, with models in all price brackets, fromthe most economical to the premium end. French manufacturers have been credited with several innovations.Notable examples include the three-quarter-size longitudinal rearbed, very popular in the 1990s and sometimes known as a “Frenchbed”, and the main front lounge and viewing area with semi-dinet-te and facing small couch. That helped both to improve amenities forpassengers on the move, by moving them forward, and to increasethe amount of accommodation available when parked, by turningaround the cabin seats. A somewhat traditional market, France hasseen a clear trend in recent years towards exploiting the rear sleepingarea, with master bedrooms and central double bed served by a dou-ble nightstand and wardrobes. The toilet and shower areas are veryimportant, often reflecting the vehicles’ long-distance use, while aparticularly roomy living area seems less necessary and is often notconvertible into a bed. Under their legal system, French citizens holding a type-B drivinglicence before 1 January 1975 can also drive recreational vehiclesweighing over 3.5 tons. Introduced in 2009, the relevant law gavethe green light to a new generation of large vehicles – of at least 8metres in length – at the medium/high end of the market, construc-ted to exploit the combination of the Fiat Ducato and the AL-KOchassis to the full. At the other end of the scale, the French also lookfor compactness, in both low-profile vehicles and motorhomes. Yetwhile the low-profiles have also abandoned the classic foldaway bed(replacing it with the now highly popular drop-down bed) in favour

of layouts split between main front living areas and rear service areas, the motorhomes tend to retain layouts that are more traditional. Thatis what the customers demand; they are very attached to traditionand generally stay loyal to their favourite make when they replacetheir vehicle. Given customers’ conservative tastes, it is amazing howthe manufacturers incessantly innovate and refresh the layouts, withnew features every season to continually enrich an already broad andvaried offering. Indeed, as we have mentioned, France has become the home of therear central bed – a layout devised almost exclusively for couples, onethat demands considerable space, nearly always of around 750 cmin length. To offer models that are more compact, the manufacturershave looked to other solutions. Often, they have reduced the toiletspace and eased the bed slightly aside to accommodate the classicshower cubicle / wardrobe at the rear. Fleurette has an interestingdesign in the Florium Mayflower 70 LMX, which manages to squee-ze the classic “lit central” layout into less than 7 metres.France, though, is also the land of budget motorhomes, created (or,rather, recreated) through names like Itineo and Moovéo. This type ofmodel is continually growing in popularity, as a great many manufac-turers belonging to different groups fight it out in a price bracketcompeting directly with the low-profiles, thus immediately bridgingthe economic gap that had always set motorhomes apart. Dedicatedto those who love a panoramic view on the move and a vehicle thatis straightforward to operate, the budget motorhomes are currentlythe real test bed not only for the different marques but also for theindustrial groups themselves, featuring all the main competitors:Adria (Sonic Axess), Autostar (Axea), Bavaria (Arctic), Benimar

(Aristeo), Buerstner (Viseo), Challenger (Sirius), Chausson (Exaltis), CI(Mizar), Itineo, McLouis (Nevis), Moovéo, Pilote (Aventura), Rapido(Serie 8), and RollerTeam (Pegaso). The commonest layout, of course, involves a rear central double bed. It has made an appearance evenon a campervan (the Font Vendome Plaisance). And campervansthemselves are growing in popularity, thanks partly to the offeringsof generalist marques and partly to some of the sector’s premier spe-cialists, such as Font Vendome and Campéreve. As for the materials, the French mainly use external profiles made offibreglass to cover the shell on entry-level and top-of-the-range vehi-cles alike. Worthy of note, fibreglass-wise, is the coup from specia-lists 3C Cartier – their new Atalante motorhome leads the way incombining latest-generation materials and automotive design withthe size of a recreational vehicle. A highly rated basic vehicle is theMercedes-Benz Sprinter, which is used for the flagship models ofmany constructors (e.g. Pilote, Bavaria, LeVoyageur, Rapido andNotin).

A ustralia’s caravan and RV manufac-turing industry has continued itsrecord run, scoring the third year in

a row over 20,000 units. Figures from RVMAustralia, the peak body for Australia’s RVmanufacturing industry, showed total pro-duction of 20,708 caravans and RVs for2012. The annual production was within 5%of the 30-year record achieved in 2011. RVMAustralia CEO David Duncan said the indu-stry’s continuing strength was built on ahealthy demand across the spectrum oflocally built RVs, especially for traditionalcaravans. “This is the third massive year in arow – 29% above the level reached in 2009– and early signs for 2013 suggest we canexpect another boom year in 2013,” he said.“There seems to be no end to the demandfor well-built, well-equipped, good-value RVsdesigned and built in Australia for Australian

conditions. “Clearly, people want the rela-xing, economical and sociable holidays thatRVs make possible, with these boom yearsachieving more than four times the outputwe had in the mid-1990s. “Traditional cara-vans continue to grow in popularity, with54.6 per cent of the total, followed by pop-tops at 24.3 per cent and camper trailers at13.8 per cent, while motorised units of alltypes account for 5 per cent”. Mr Duncansaid Australia’s RV and caravan industry wasinvesting in its own success, with severalRVM Australia members expanding their fac-

tories and upgrading their production equip-ment.Traditional caravans account for more thanhalf of Australia’s RV output, which has top-ped 20,000 units for the third year in a row.“We are seeing a constant evolution in pro-duction, with computer aided design beco-ming the norm for a growing number ofmanufacturers,” he said. “It’s all part of theindustry’s effort to meet the demand formodern, safe, reliable and even luxuriousRVs and caravans – and the production figu-res show the effort is succeeding.”

T his snapshot presents information on the caravan or camping (CC) sector and a profile of dome-stic (Australian residents) and international visitors who stayed in CC accommodation in 2011.Latest statistics on the characteristics of CC visitors show that, as at the June quarter 2010, there

were 1,638 caravan parks (with 40 or more powered sites) in Australia, employing around 10,600 per-sons. These parks hosted around 225,100 sites, with an occupancy rate of 53%, and takings of around$50 million. Over the five year period 2005 to 2010, the number of CC establishments and sites decrea-sed slightly, while persons employed increased 5%.CC visitors in Australia are defined as visitors who use CC accommodation facilities at either commercialsites (caravan parks, camping grounds or cabins), or non-commercial sites (self-drive van; motor home orcampervan; or camping by the side of the road, private property, crown land or a national park). Visitorsdo not necessarily spend all of their nights in CC accommodation on their trip. ‘Other visitors’ are definedas domestic or international visitors who do not stay in CC accommodation while travelling in AustraliaAge profileExactly half of the 8.5 million domestic CC visitors in Australia were aged 30–54 years, while around onequarter were active seniors aged 55 to 70 years. This sector grew rapidly in 2011, with visitors increasingby 12% to 2.6 million. Compared to 2000 estimates, trips by active CC seniors were up 90%, while nightswere up 23% and expenditure was up 77% (in nominal terms). The profile was very different for themuch smaller international visitor segment, with nearly half (46%) of all international CC visitors aged 20to 29 years in 2011, but they also contributed a higher proportion of nights (67%).Where did the international CC visitors come from?Around two-thirds (67%) of international CC visitors were from Europe, with visitors from the UnitedKingdom (19.0%) and Germany (15.7%) holding the highest share from within the region. Of the otherleading markets, New Zealand (with 9.5% share) and the United States (6.3%) were significant interna-tional markets for the industry. Although the total international visitor market now features a large andgrowing share of travellers from the Asian region, these visitors were less likely to use CC accommoda-tion, contributing around 8.3% of the total share of international visitors using CC grounds in 2011.Australia’s leading market by value, China, held only a 0.5% share of Asian visitation using this accom-modation type during 2011.
