This high energy service is a good way to begin your
Sunday morning! Our Praise Band plays a variety of
good music including folk, country, rock, and gospel.
Our service is spirit-filled and energetic, yet relaxed
and welcoming. Dress is casual and the STARS Café is
open before and after. Make yourself at home.

WELCOME | We are glad you chose to worship with us today! Please enjoy some coffee and refreshments in the Stars Cafe before the service begins. During the service, you will have a chance to respond to the message using your Connection Card. Please complete the card and return it to us in the baskets at the rear of the Worship Center or bring it to our Guest Services Desk in the Stars Cafe . For our first-time guests, we have a gift for you at the Guest Services Desk when you return your card.
CURRENT MESSAGE SERIES: “Top 10” | Do you have a favorite scripture passage? Did you know that some of our current teachings in leadership, advice we give regarding parenting and marriage, and expressions we use to find hope and comfort come from the scriptures? This summer, we are exploring 10 of our favorite scripture passages. We will talk about what these scriptures meant to their original audience and how they shape our faith today. Within these passages, we find truth, grace, hope, and guidance as we seek to live in faithful obedience to God.
WHAT’S NEXT? | Getting involved in church can be a little confusing—there are so many options! We want to help you identify and engage in the “next step” in your faith journey. At the end of the service, we will identify three easy steps for you. However, your next step may be something we have not identified; that step is different for everyone. Use your Connection Card or stop by our Guest Services Desk in the Stars Cafe , and we will respond by suggesting some practical “next steps” just for you. Discover more about other possible next steps at www.bethlehemfirstumc.com/next.

JOY IN THE FACE OF CONFLICT STUDY GUIDE Philippians: The Pursuit of Joy – Part 2 of 4
Monday – Conflicts in the Early Church – Philippians 4:2-3 Conflict is a part of life. It’s not always bad - in fact, good can come out of conflict if handled appro-priately. What would be an example of healthy conflict producing a positive outcome? What does it take for conflict to be handled appropriately or in a Christian manner? What does unhealthy conflict look like? Are there any people you are currently in conflict with? Read Philippians 4:2-3. For an example of an even more conflicted church, Read 1 Corinthians 1:10-13. Sometimes Christians avoid conflict at all costs - is this what God wants? What might be an example of a conflict that must be entered into rather than avoided? Read Galatians 2:11-13. Here Paul enters into conflict rather than avoiding it. Look at the guidelines Paul gives for how we deal with one another to avoid ungodly conflict: Read Philippians 1:9-11. This prayer for the Philippians makes even more sense in the light of the conflict that was happening in the church - how does your knowledge of the conflict between Euodia & Syntyche help you understand what motivated Paul to make this his prayer?
Tuesday – Finding Joy in the Face of Conflict – Philippians 2:1-5 Read Philippians 2:1-5, remember that Paul is giving the Philippians the key to being “like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose” - in other words, living without conflict. What are the keys to working through conflicts that Paul gives us? What does this passage teach us about the heart of a Christian? How are you doing at allowing God to shape this heart in you? Remember that the hallmark of the Christian life and faith is love. Read 1 Corinthians 13 for another picture of the Christian life. This was a guide to help the Corinthi-ans, who were also experiencing conflict, to find joy and peace in their church. Use both of today’s readings as an outline for prayer asking God to form these attitudes in your heart.
Wednesday – The Oldest Christian Hymn – Philippians 2:5-11 Read Philippians 2:5-11. This passage is considered by many scholars to be a Christian hymn. Here are the reasons: 1.) It is written in a style that is different from the rest of the letter and different from Paul’s normal form of writing - indicating Paul was quoting something else. 2.) These verses reflect a poetic style which is why most Bibles typeset them as poetry. 3.) The content does not flow naturally from what comes before and seems to be quoted to illustrate what Paul has said. For these reasons scholars believe Paul is quot-ing a hymn that the early believers likely sang. It reveals the beliefs of the earliest Christians. These verses show early Christians believed in the deity of Christ, and in his triumphant return at a future date. What do you learn about Jesus here?
Thursday – Shining Like Stars in the Sky – Philippians 2:12-18 Read Philippians 2:12-18. Paul repeatedly teaches that salvation is a gift, not earned by our works - so what does he mean when he tells the Philippians to “work out their salvation with fear and trembling”? How might this be about conflict and the attitudes described in 2:1-11? Notice verse 14 ties in once more to the conflict in the church. How can you “shine like a star in the sky”?
Friday – Scriptures on Humility – Various Passages Let’s conclude our study on humility by looking at a few other passages related to this important theme: 2 Samuel 22:28; 2 Chronicles 7:14; Proverbs 11:2; Isaiah 57:15; Luke 13:7-11, 18:9-14; James 4:6-11; John 13:1-17. How do these passages speak to you?

CALL TO WORSHIP Fran Bower
Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of remembrance We remember fallen soldiers, and the sacrifice they made for the sake of others Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of thanksgiving. We thank God for brave men and women that have given their lives so that we may worship without fear. Let us begin our time of worhip with a moment of silence; for a moment of silence is the least we can do for those that gave eternity for our freedom
INVOCATION God of every nation, as we remember those that gave their life for our sake, let us be stirred to action in their memory. We confess that we have not done all that is possible to promote peace and justice in our world. We have not loved our neighbors, let alone our enemies. Forgive us for failing to live up to your commandments. Empower us to work for your Kingdom in this world, and welcome us by your grace into your Kingdom in the next. Amen. Fran Bower

he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from
thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
