What are the Components of Compass to Personal Success?

Why Compass to Personal Success?Benefits of participation in CPS for students at the University of Rochester include:

• Identification of their purpose and passion

• Increased self-efficacy and competence for effective leadership

• Creation of meaningful and lasting connections within the community

• Reflect and celebrate one’s impact within the campus and surrounding communities

• Receive recognition at various levels for dedicated time and efforts

• Gain valuable resume-building experience

What is Compass to Personal Success? The University of Rochester recognizes the increasing demand for individuals capable of taking leadership roles in all professions and sectors of society. Rooted in the Social Change Model of Leadership, the Compass to Personal Success Program (CPS) strives to enhance students’ self-awareness and self-knowledge in an effort to develop their leadership skills and competencies. To achieve this students:

• Enroll in formal classes

• Engage in mentoring relationships

• Participate in community/civic based leadership opportunities

The Social Change Model of Leadership consists of three components: the Individual, the Group, and the Community/Society. This model of leadership suggests that a leader is “one who is able to effect positive change for the betterment of others, the community, and society. All people are potential leaders.” Emphasis is placed on the following principles:

• Leadership is collaborative.

• Leadership should be value-based.

• Leadership is a process rather than a position.

• Service is a powerful vehicle for developing students’ leadership skills.

• All students (not just those who hold formal positions) are potential leaders.

• Leadership is concerned with effecting change on behalf of others and society.

To learn more, students are encouraged to attend the Information Session on Sept. 7, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons. Call (585) 273-3961 to R.S.V.P.

Students have the option to complete the program in a three-year schedule or in an accelerated two-year schedule. Accepted students will join a cohort and work through portions of the program together. The requirements of the program are outlined in the table below. Failure to complete any of the mandatory components of CPS could jeopardize student’s participation in the program.

To be considered for the Compass to Personal Success Program, students must be:

• Currently enrolled as an Undergraduate in good disciplinary standing at the University of Rochester.

• Students must be willing to be involved OR actively involved in campus organizations, community service, civic engagement, and/or employment OR previously involved at the High School Level.
