It is only through the generosity of others that The Miami Foundation is able to lead significant, lasting change in our community. The combination of philanthropy with our relationships, deep understanding of the issues and creativity to explore new ideas and solutions is very powerful.

The more than $225 million that has been entrusted to us by more than 1,000 individuals, families and corporations in our rich history is the cornerstone for this work. These philanthropic investments have allowed us to make significant impacts on the lives of thousands of Miamians and people across the globe. This is leadership through philanthropy. The more than $15 million we award in grants and scholarships each year is the capstone of this work. At times we are working with a small nonprofit to find more effective ways to deliver a critical program. In other instances, we are working with numerous cross-sector partners on a community-wide issue. Large or small, this is leadership through community. Philanthropy, relationships, understanding and creativity are things that come together at The Miami Foundation. Because we are uniquely positioned to bring stakeholders together to tackle issues of concern, and because we work together with our Fundholders and community partners, we leverage these for a greater impact than any one of us could make alone.

Miami FellowsImagine the opportunity, early in your career, to spend 15 months interacting with a broad and diverse group of community leaders. You would have elected officials, business executives, historians, activists and foreign leaders available to you, imparting knowledge and providing perspective.

Along the way, you would develop a deep understanding of the Miami community – it’s history, it’s successes, it’s challenges. You would visit another country in our hemisphere and see first-hand how the decisions we make in Miami affect others and how we in Miami are affected by their decisions. And you would have the unique opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills so that at the completion of this fellowship program you are positioned to achieve greater things for you and for Miami.

This challenging, vibrant, one-of-a-kind opportunity is Miami Fellows.

Agenda for Leadership

Each and every day, we work with a wide variety of philanthropists to make our community a better place through focused grantmaking and charitable giving. We are keenly aware, however, that philanthropy alone cannot create the kind of community we aspire to be. To be effective and make significant, lasting change, thoughtful leadership must be exerted to make positive impact on our daily lives. Thus, strengthening leadership in the private, nonprofit and public sectors becomes as central to our community building strategy as the investments we make in organizations and programs working to improve our neighborhoods.

By stitching together a shared vision and platform on this core issue of leadership development, we seek to provide a clear path for those who are inspired to help lead. At the same time we instill confidence in the community that our future leaders have the ethical core and professional competence to lead and inspire.

The more than $15 millionwe award in grants each year is accomplished in a number of ways.

Community GrantsCommunity Grants are made from a pool of Funds established by philanthropists to provide support for the most pressing needs in our community. Each year, The Miami Foundation awards hundreds of grants to Miami nonprofits that are making a difference in our community.

The causes supported by Community Grants are as diverse as Miami. Over the years, we’ve fostered the arts, taught children to read, championed diversity and supported emerging issues.

These Funds provide a perpetual source of support for today’s most important issues and tomorrow’s causes not yet identified.

Donor Advised GrantsDonor Advised Grants are made by philanthropists who want the grantmaking feel of a private foundation. These generous people support causes that reflect their values and help to achieve their personal philanthropic goals. The causes they support are as diverse as the donors themselves and range from small, grassroots startups to large university alumni campaigns.

The professional staff at The Miami Foundation work with each philanthropist as their personal philanthropic advisor. Our team of advisors identify unique programs, arrange site visits and handle all the administrative and compliance work - leaving the fun of grantmaking to the philanthropist.

Beyond Grants In addition to the grants that we award each year, The Miami Foundation provides civic leadership, bringing stakeholders together to tackle issues of concern in our community. Working together with our donors and community partners, we leverage collective knowledge, creativity and resources for a greater impact than any one of us could make alone.

It’s your community, it’s our community, together the possibilites are endless.

A Special Initiative: The Braive FundThe wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have had a deep impact on thousands of South Florida military personnel and their families. In 2008, The Miami Foundation was trusted with a $5 million gift to help care for these men and women and their families.

For these heroes and their families, a multitude of unmet needs had arisen from their deployment.

We took the $5 million and carefully invested in the work of nonprofits that directly serve our military community.

Organizations were chosen that provide leadership and sustainable solutions in an effective manner. Grants were made to proven nonprofits such as the American Red Cross of Greater Miami and Fisher House. Plus, promising grassroots organizations like Veterans Link Up, which provides outreach to help service members, veterans and families readjust to civilian life, received needed financial support.

As the Initiative comes to a close in 2011, we continue to work with our Fundholders and community partners whose charitable interests include providing for the health and well-being of our heroes and their families.

Starting Is Easy

Page 13: About The Miami Foundation

Starting Is Easy In three easy steps your Fund

can be open today. First, choose the assets to start your Fund. While cash is easiest, appreciated stocks, business interest, real estate and other alternative assets are all options available to you. Second, choose a name for your Fund. A popular choice is often “The [Surname] Foundation.” At times, donors wish to remain anonymous. When this is the case, our staff can assist you in choosing a name that reflects your wishes and protects your identity. Finally, choose what you would like to support over what period of time. The philanthropic advisors at The Miami Foundation will walk you through a series of questions and a unique values discovery exercise to develop a personal philanthropic plan.

Change the World TodayThe easiest way to see how The Miami Foundation can help you give more effectively is to speak with one of our philanthropic advisors about your charitable goals and interests. To set up an introduction, call us at 305.371.2711 or email [email protected].

Please visit our website at miamifoundation.org to learn more about how we can help you change the world.

■Flexibility. Whether you want to give now or in the future through your estate, The Miami Foundation will create a custom, charitable solution to fulfill your needs.

■Fun. Philanthropy is fun. When you partner with us we take care of the increasingly complex laws, accounting, tax and compliance issues – freeing you up to enjoy making gifts to the causes that you care about.

■Accountability. We believe that charitable investments should be expected to produce positive returns, just as it is expected from financial investments.

■Empowered. Our donors are informed and strategic because we share our knowledge and findings with you through regular reports, educational forums, donor briefings and site visits.

CashCash is the simplest way to add to or create your own Fund. Your gift immediately establishes your custom, charitable Fund from which you can make grants immediately.

Stocks and SecuritiesStocks, bonds and mutual funds that have appreciated over time provide a greater tax benefit to you than gifts of cash. They’re easily transferable, transfer at full market value and allow you to avoid capital gains taxes.

Compare Cash to Securities Gifts:

Real EstateInvestment property, vacation homes and agricultural lands make excellent charitable gifts to start your Fund. Often a home is the largest asset a donor can give. When used for charitable purposes, you can create a legacy much larger than previously imagined. You receive an immediate tax deduction for the full appraised value and avoid capital gains taxes if you’ve held the property for more than 12 months.

Why EndowmentWhen you endow your Fund, the principal will never be spent. Your

Fund is invested in a long-term growth pool, earning returns that allow

your philanthropy to endure – forever.

The Power of Endowment: The DadeFund Hugh Westbrook and Esther Colliflower started the hospice movement in

Miami. These visionary leaders inherently understood the need for

quality, compassionate end-of-life care. And that’s just what their

company provided for 16 years.

It’s no surprise that they called on that same vision when they sold

their hospice business. Hugh and Esther used a portion of the

proceeds and established a custom, charitable Fund at The Miami

Foundation. The DadeFund, as they named it, supports the causes

most dear to them. Through their Fund, Hugh and Esther have

taught hundreds of children to read and helped kids who turn 18

and are forced to exit the foster care system get a better start on the

road to independence. They also have provided needed assistance

to Miami’s most fragile residents, allowing them to gracefully live

their final days.
