About the Guest Speaker…

Diane Ackerman

Poet, essayist, and naturalist, DianeAckerman is the author of two dozen highlyacclaimed works of nonfiction and poetry.

Her 2007 memoir, The Zookeeper's Wife, received the Orion Book Award, whichhonored it as "a groundbreaking work ofnonfiction, in which the human relationshipto nature is explored in an absolutelyoriginal way by looking at the Holocaust. A few years ago, 'nature' writers wereasking themselves, ‘How can a book be atthe same time a work of art, an act ofconscientious objection to the destruction ofthe world, and an affirmation of hope andhuman decency?’ The Zookeeper's Wifeanswers this question."

Her most recent book, One Hundred Wordsfor Love, is about Ackerman's husband, agifted wordsmith, author and intellectual, who suffered a stroke that robbed him of theability to speak. Standard therapies yieldedlittle but frustration, and the book recountsthe story of how Diane herself was able toguide Paul back to the world of words.

Ms. Ackerman has received a D. Lit. fromKenyon College, Guggenheim Fellowship,Orion Book Award, John Burroughs NatureAward, and the Lavan Poetry Prize, and hasbeen honored as a Literary Lion by the NewYork Public Library.
