STUDENT SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL STAFF

WHANAU (HOUSE) SYSTEM

Students are also supported through our Whanau (pronounced fa-no) system. We have six houses in the school, and students belong to a Whanau where they are part of a family of teachers and students who know them well and help them with any difficulties they may have.

Fun competitions between Whanau take place throughout the year, where students represent their house in competing for the much-desired Whanau Shield.

WHAT IS NCEA?The New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is made up of three certificates, Levels 1, 2 and 3. Students begin NCEA in their third year of secondary school (Year 11).

Each subject is divided into standards. The standards set out what a student needs to be able to demonstrate to achieve that particular standard.

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKSWhat are Credits?Each standard is worth a number of credits. When a student achieves a standard, they earn that number of credits towards their NCEA.

A single standard is usually worth three to four credits. A single subject usually has five standards. In BDSC the normal number of credits per subject is ~20.

How is work assessed?Students’ work is either externally or internally assessed.• External assessment usually means that students take an exam or create a piece of work that is marked externally by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).• Most subjects have an external at the end of the year.• Internal assessments refers to work that is marked by the school (e.g. essays, tests, experiments), the marking is checked by moderators from the NZQA to make sure all schools are assessing a national standard.

HOW DOES NCEA COMPARE?N C E A L e v e l 1 is similar to the following qualifications:• British General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE);• Canadian or United States Grade 10; • Year 10 awards in a number of Australian states – School Certificate, Junior Certificate and Achievement Certificate.N C E A L e v e l 3 is similar to the following qualifications:• British A level; and• Year 12 awards in a number of Australian States, for example the New South Wales Higher School Certificate.• NCEA level 3 is transferable to German Arbitur

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

•These are the minimum credits for New Zealand university entrance*. Some courses will require a higher number of credits.•Universities rank students according to their best 80 level 3 credits from up to five ap-proved subjects, weighted by the level of achievement attained in each set of credits.•Rank score is calculated as follows:

Achieved = 2 points, Merit = 3 points, Excellence = 4 points
