An incubation center for marginalised women
-- Priyanka Khandelwal
I met Sangeeta Devi during Jagriti Yatra and got to know about her journey of transformation. She
learnt to make Jute jewelry in a govt. camp organized in her village where she found her lost creativity back.
Later, she trained more women and started selling it in exhibitions and fairs. Now, they are a group of 50+ women. She said “Didi, ab mujhe
lagta hai ki mera bhi astitva hai (Now I feel that I exist)”
What inspired me most is her commitment to share her success with people around and her vision for future of her two daughters.
Our source of inspiration…
We envision to transform millions of women to such Sangeeta Devis (Abiras) who…
are independent and confident
have thirst to grow socially and spiritually
have an attitude to add value to the world
It is ironical how the ones who hold the reins of future are one of the
most neglected in our society
Our Vision
Build an ecosystem for women to set them on the path of
learning and growth.
• “If you invest in a women, you are investing in everyone else” Melinda gates
• Emerging Business needs like child care, delivery staff etc
• “58% women between age 20-40yrs are not working at all” NSSO 2011

So the incubation process is…
Analyse Market Need
• Identify local business opportunities or market needs where women could be aligned with limited training. For Ex. we initially had partnered with a jewelry trading firm to help us with orders for few Abiras. As business grew, we involved more Abiras and got more clients.
Hiring & Training
• Hire women from nearby marginalized communities• Understand the potential and interest• Train in specific employable skills i.e. manufacturing, sales etc.
Incubation & Placement
• Develop leadership abilities and empower women to take forward the business or• Align Abiras to relevant employment opportunities
Expand• Grow the business and involve more Abiras.
Few impact stories, as Abiras explain…
“My biggest achievement at Abira is the confidence to raise my voice for what I truly believe in. I was married at the age of 15 (Now 32yrs old). When my son got good grades in 10th standard, it was clear that our current financial situation will not be able to support his dreams. I started working at Abira against the wishes of my family. Initially it was merely a job but now became an important part of my life. It introduced me to my true potential. I started with manufacturing jewelry but now take care of salary processing, Abira database, financial inclusion of new Abiras, performance management, admin etc.”
Shakuntala Palapure
“I had a dream to study. It took backseat when I got married at 17 (now 29 yrs old) and later became mother of two sons. I am reliving it again at Abira. I learnt to speak in English, working on computers, manage the team etc. I do production planning of all our current orders. I got an opportunity to represent Abira creations at EPCH trade fair in Delhi where I could confidently talk to overseas buyers and State textile minister Mr. Ajay Tamta. Abira empowered me to manage my dreams and responsibilities together in a better way. My family now respect my aspirations.”
