Initially, it is being planned to start as a pilot project in Sri Lanka and India which may be extended to other Asian countries at a later stage. Three universities from Sri Lanka and two Indian universities will participate in planning, applying for grant and imparting training for nurses, technolo- gists and doctors. This project will also focus in developing specific course curriculum for Blood Bank nurses and communication skills for other Blood Bank personnel, apart from skill development for technical cadres. Two days meeting was held on 13-14th March, 2019 in Barcelona with Dr. Armand S. Bonastre (Vice-Rector; AUB), Mr. Xavier Biarnes (Project Advisor; AUB), Dr. Joan Garcia (Director Research & Education; Banc de Sang i Teixits) and Ms. Marina Vilarmau (Banc de Sang i Teixits) Dr. N. Choudhury (President) and Dr. Ananda Gunasekera (Secretary General) represented AATM in this scientific meeting. It was decided that the joint projects between AUB, AATM, Banc de Sang and universities from Asia will be planned and submitted to European Commission for funding in a time bound manner. AATM meeting with AUB and Banc de Sang i Teixits, Barcelona for

After completion a certificate is given, duly signed by the NBTC Director & AATM Executive along with the

Training Centre I/C.

8th Anatolian Blood Day in Antaliya, Turkey (8-10th March, 2019) Every year a unique conference is held in Antaliya ,Turkey where many topics are discussed. Often after

the conference a definitive outcome is reached and a joint statement is signed by participant from different

countries and the document produced is of similar nature as the Jeneva convention as it has the input,

concensus and documented agreement on some important issue.This year the conference was held from

8th to 10th March and "AATM members held a meeting on various subjects. It was a well organized

and well participated event.

Joint Congress of AABB AATM

Exploring New Horizons -Transfusion and Cell Therapies

AABB is the global leader in standards development, accreditation and implementation of quality systemsin

transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. The primary objective of Asian Association of Transfusion Med-

icine is to accelerate the scientific progress and common standard in Blood Transfusion Services (BTS) in this

part of the world. Both the organizations thus have joined hands to translate knowledge into solutions to inspire,

and enable research, innovation, discovery and excellence. The scientific sessions were designed with

a holistic approach to cover all possible topics related to transfusion and cell therapies, such as Spectrum of

Clinical Transfusion, a futuristic look at strategies for Blood Safety, Accreditation of Blood services, researches

and new advances and more.

It was agreed a couple of years ago that AABB accreditation for Asian blood banks could be conducted by AATM

based on different levels of blood bank standing level. In order to understand and maintain the AABB standard it was

decided that AABB master trainer would impart training to perspective inspectors of AATM from different countries.

Hence it was divided in two parts and initial training wad imparted a few years ago while the next session of the

accreditation training was given in the preconference workshop in Delhi.

IRETM's student wins the Best Research Poster Presentation

Award in AABB-AATM 2018 joint congress

In AABB-AATM joint congress held from 7-8 December 2018 in New Delhi, Ms. Parinaz Zarghamian, the

post-graduate student of Medical Biotechnology from Iranian High Institution for Research & Education in

Transfusion Medicine (IRETM) won the best re- search poster.

Her research title was the assessment the knowledge of blood transfusion among Iranian nurses in Tehran’s hospital.

Four students from IRETM participated in the congress with three poster and one oral presentation.

Wet Workshops

CMEs and Wet workshops are a very good tool to increase awareness and knowledge and impart training to

enhance skills. AATM has been conducting the wet workshops success fully for all these years. A total of 9 work-

shops were held in 2018 under AATM. In 2019 , April the First AATM Wet Workshop will be held in Riyadh Saudi

Arabia on ‘Advance Immunohematology”.

Wet Workshop on “Immunohematology”

Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine (AATM)-Bangladesh chapter and Blood transfusion Medicine

Bangladesh(BTSB) jointly organized a Wet Workshop on “Apheresis & Therapeutic Plasma Exchange” on

23th October 2018 in Prof. S.G.M Chowdhury Hall, DMCH, Dhaka. The seminar was chaired by Prof.

Dr.Md. Mazharul Hoque Tapan (Chairperson & Secretary General, AATM (Bangladesh Chapter) & BTSB.

Immunohaematology Workshop organized by ISBT in Faisalabad Medical

University Pakistan

International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT) Academy

organized a training workshop on ‘Immunohaematology’ at the

Department of Pathology and Biochemistry, Faisalabad Medical

University, Faisalabad. The participants included Blood

Transfusion Officers, Medical Technologists and Laboratory

Technicians from public and private sector blood establishments

in Faisalabad. The objectives of the workshop included training of

existing work force in the correct use of immunohaematology

techniques in blood centres; enhancing the skills in lementing

internal quality controls in immunohaematology and capacity

development to perform quality control parameters as per QC

Guidelines.complications, the need for routine antibody detection

in the blood bank laboratory is of paramount importance. In

Pakistan, red cell antibody detection tests and identification

procedures conforming to acceptable international standards are

not performed routinely in blood centers. The workshop will thus

increase the significance about performing these investigations

routinely and build the technical capacity of the blood bank

personnel to perform these investigations.

Dr. Durr e Naz Jamal Director Sind Blood Transfusion Authority Pakistan had a meeting with Dr Farrukh Hasan

Immediate past President and Executive Council Member of AATM, to discuss how to work together and improve

the hemovigilance data in Sindh. During the discussion it was decided to collaborate on various aspects of modern

blood banking and to hold regular CMEs and wet workshops together. She briefed about the current transfusion

practices in Sind Pakistan as observed during the visit to both blood banks. The blood banks are now working with

license and for the first time they have been correctly identified & counted. However, there are some areas both in

the blood bank and the clinical side, which need to be addressed and improved.

Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority holds consultations with experts

The Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority

(SBTA) organized a meeting with the

transfusion medicine experts in its office

in Karachi on March 26, 2019 with the

objective of taking into confidence the

provincial experts about the reform

agenda of the SBTA and its plans to

conduct the regulation of blood centers in

Sindh in conformity with the national and

international guidelines and

recommendations.

The invited experts included the representatives from AATM and other

leading public, private and NGO sector blood banks in Karachi. Dr.

Durrenaz informed that the SBTA is now regulating the provincial blood

banks in a very methodical and recommended manner and adopting a

non-punitive constructive approach to strengthen the standard of services of the large and medium sized reputable

blood centers. At the same time the smaller blood banks operating from miscellaneous settings are being

strictly according to the legislation. It is expected that with this new Approach.. She also shared the data of 147

licensed blood banks in Sindh and its analysis. This is the first time that Sindh BTA has collected detailed proper and

authentic data from all the licensed blood banks in Sindh.

The SBTA plans to notify some of the leading experts to act as honorary Inspectors of SBTA. The entire meeting

session was interactive in which detailed discussion took place during the presentations.

Scientific Seminar on “Stem Cell Therapeutics”

A graceful Scientific Seminar on “Stem Cell Therapeutics” was organized by the Transfusion Medicine and

Clinical Haematology Department of BIRDEM General Hospital in collaboration with Asian Association of

Transfusion Medicine (AATM, Bangladesh- Chapter) & Blood Transfusion Society of Bangladesh (BTSB) on

6th November, 2018 at Dhaka Club.The seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Md. Mazharul Hoque Tapan

(Chairperson & Secretary General of AATM (Bangladesh Chapter) & BTSB respectively. Keynote speaker was

Dr. Richard De Andrea (Medical Director, Global Stem Cell Network; Advisor IBIO (Thailand) Ltd.).

4th National Conference of BTSB -2018

4th National Conference of Blood Transfusion Society of

Bangladesh (BTSB) was held on 22nd September, 20018

in 3D Seminar Hall, Krishibid Institution Complex,

Bangladesh. The theme of this congress was “Stem cell

therapy isn’t growing its exploding”.

Four scientific papers were presented by the eminent

transfusion scientist of the Bangladesh.

Therapeutic plasma exchange, Autologous haemopoitic

stem cell in decompensated liver cirrhosis were some

topics.

After the inaugural session annual general meeting and new committee was formed. In new committee, Prof.

Dr. Musleh Uddin Ahmed and Prof. Dr. Mazharul Hoque Tapan was elected as president and secretary general

of BTSB. An awesome cultural programme was held and followed by gala dinner.

The next AATM Annual Conference will be held in Mongolia from 10 to 12 September 2019
