Ō Hiraṇyabāhū! You are the sole refuge! Sri Rudra Namaka mantra decrees, “Namō Hiraṇyabāhavē Sēnānyē Diśāṁ ca

Patayē Namaha.” This composition below is an earnest appeal to the Supreme Lord Śiva, also existent in the form of Sun God, pervading and ruling all the quarters with His shoulders of ‘Light’. ‘Sāmakiraṇa Tantrī Śruti:’ - The rays of Sun contain the energy to emanate speech. Because of this energy only, the world dormant in the night gets filled with sounds after

the transmission of Sun rays. Maybe, this is the reason for the morning hustle-bustle of birds and others. This is substantiated in scriptures as follows – ‘Prātasmarāmi khalu tatsaviturvarēṇyam | rūpaṁ hi maṇḍala mr̥cōtha tanūrya jūṁṣi|

Sāmāni yasyakiraṇāḥ prabhāvādi hētuṁ |brahmāharātmaka macintyamalakṣya mūrtiṁ ||’ (Rig Vēda is Sun’s boundary form. YajurVēda is His body. Sāmamulu i.e. SamaVēda Mantras which are musical in nature are His rays.) The embodiment of Vēdas and the personification of music is Śaṅkara Himself. He Himself is radiating effulgence as Sun. This composition is composed venerating those sounds of Vēda that emanate from Him. Goddess Saraswati’s vīna (stringed musical instrument) is called ‘Kacchapi’. The Siva Nataraja dancing in the ‘Circle of Fire’ is the same Sun blazing in the center of inferno. Siva’s dance is called ‘Tāndava’ and it’s characteristic feature is called ‘Ārbhati’. His dancing form is the passionate and kind form of Siva in magnanimity. That dance is this universe. Even the literature that comes with His grace is also His dance. That literature becomes the quintessence to this world.

Bharateeyam “Mantra is a Sanskrit word whose literal meaning is “that which protects and purifies the mind.” Here mind represents not only thought but also feelings. These sounds, each of which is a kind of germinating seed (in Sanskrit bīja) that is implanted in the mind, are catalysts for ridding ourselves of traits that impede our spiritual unfoldment.” ―James D'Angelo, Author of ‘The Healing Power of the Human Voice’.

Spiritual Quest (Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma)

It is said that ‘Providence is unavoidable’, even after reposing faith in Iswara. Is this true? “It is in fact a great sin to even think that Providence is unavoidable after completely believing the Supreme Lord. Sri Adi Sankara termed those words as ‘Durakshara’ in ‘Doorikrutaani Duritaani Duraksharaani’. He said that one should not utter anything suspecting Parameswara even under the direst of circumstances. All malefic planetary effects lose their influence once one takes refuge in Parameswara. It is commonly advised to perform Rudrabhisheka if someone is suffering from evil planetary effects. For mere mortals like us, it is impossible to understand the power of His protection. We only look at our experiences in this instant, but one should not forget that He can not only look at the past but also into the future”.

Puṣpadanta composed ‘Śiva mahimna stōtraṁ’ interspersing loving devotion, divine knowledge, and profound philosophy with highest aesthetics and sonorous poetry. This stōtra is accorded highest importance even in Mantra treatises, which mention it’s application in Śiva’s Abhishek also. This stōtra is composed in ‘Śikhariṇi’ meter. Each slōka is unfathomable and unfolds the philosophy of Siva in its own inimitable style. The slōka below summarizes Sanātana Dharma in It’s entirety. Swami Vivekananda quoted this slōka at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago to provide holistic and definitive view of Sanātana Dharma to the western world -

“trayī sāṅkhyaṁ yogaḥ paśupatimataṁ vaiṣṇavamiti prabhinne prasthāne paramidamadaḥ pathyamiti ca | rucīnāṁ vaicitryādṛjukuṭila nānāpathajuṣāṁ nṛṇāmeko gamyastvamasi payasāmarṇava iva ||”

Different paths to realization are enjoined by the Vēdas (also known as Trayi because Vēdas contain three types of Mantras - Rik, Yajus, and Sama), Sāṅkhya (philosophical contemplation with the aid of elucidation about 24 Tattvas as proposed by sage Kapila), Yoga (proposed by sage Patanjali), Pāśupata (Śaiva doctrine), Vaishnava Śāstras, and many others. People follow different paths, straight or crooked, according to their temperament,

depending on which they consider best, or most appropriate. But, it has to be understood that they reach YOU ALONE tvamasi, just as rivers enter the ocean. Who is this ‘YOU’ here? Here, Puṣpadanta means that the ‘Supreme Parabrahman’ is ‘ONE’. Vēdas themselves decree ‘Yeko Rudraha’ – Rudra is the only one, as well ‘Yeko Nārāyaṇaḥ’ – Nārāyaṇa is the only one and also ‘Yekāha’ – Śakti or Divine Mother is the only one. Then, what is the truth? Can we sin attributing falsehood to Vēdas? What Vēdas mean here is very lucid. The same has been connoted by many intellectuals including Puṣpadanta. ‘There is only ONE, that which is perceived as Rudra, Nārāyaṇa, and Śakti’ differently by different people at different times according to their innate tendencies. It is also said ‘Ākāśāt patitaṁ tōyaṁ sāgaraṁ prati gacchati, sarva dēva namaskāraṁ kēśavaṁ prati gacchati" – Just as every drop of water that falls from sky reaches the sea, salutation to any God reaches kēśava. This does not mean that one should not prostrate to other Gods except kēśava. What this emphasizes is that one should offer reverence to all the Gods with the realization that ultimately it reaches kēśava. Everyone should contemplate that their chosen deity is that ‘ONE SUPREME PARABRAHMAN’ and every other God is the form of ‘THAT’. Only Sanātana Dharma can boldly proclaim this universally appealing truth without any reservations. As Lord Krishna said in Śrīmad Bhagavad Gīta , ‘Svadharmē nidhanaṁ śrēyaḥ paradharmō bhayāvahaḥ ’, everyone should judiciously follow Dharma stipulated to them by the scriptures, while respecting the Dharma of others. - Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma

(Adapted from ‘Siva Mahimna Stotram’ discourse)

Bhīṣma is venerated as ‘Ācharya’. It is customary to offer tarpaṇa to this great soul on Aṣṭami day before Bhīṣma Ēkādaśi. Bhīṣma lived a celibate and devoted life filled with Dharma, discipline and duty. Even Lord Krishna gave the ‘Adhikāra’ (due respect) to Bhīṣma and had him narrate the entire Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra to Pandavas in His very presence. But, many a times, people talk about Bhīṣma with half or little knowledge. Most common complaint against Bhīṣma is about his ‘silence’, when Draupadi was humiliated in the court of Dhritaraṣṭra. But, one should read Mahabharata carefully. Bhīṣma was not ‘silent’ at that time. Prompted by Vidura, Bhīṣma said, “Alas! O Draupadi! In this direst of circumstances, you all are still talking about Dharma. That itself tells volumes about your commitment towards Dharma. Either just your furious looks or Yudhisthira’s ferocious countenance is sufficient to destroy all these people, their families, and friends along with their entire wealth. But, your patience and commitment to Dharma is phenomenal. That Dharma to which you are so committed shall definitely save you.” Bhīṣma’s cryptic words pointed towards the complete destruction of Kauravas in the future. Many people perform ‘Bhīṣma Pan̄caka Vrata’, by offering arghya to Bhīṣma starting from Ēkādaśi till Pourṇima. This grants virtuous progeny and their subsequent victory on all fronts. Following sloka is recited while offering arghya – Bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavō vīraḥ satyavādī jitēndriyaḥ| ābhiradbhiravāpnōti

Ratha Saptami Worship of Sun on this day grants immense merits equal to the worship of Sun for one complete year. Giving ‘Arghya’ to Sun in copper pot, worshipping with red sandalwood and red flowers, offering rice pudding cooked with cow milk using cow dung cakes as fuel are prescribed scriptural stipulations to be observed on this auspicious day. Need to recite the below sloka while taking bath:

yadyajjanma kr̥taṁ pāpaṁ mayā janmasu saptasu

On the day of Śrī Pan̄cami , divine mother is worshipped as Goddess Saraswati, Goddess of learning. One has to reminisce the

sages Panini, Katyāyana and Patan̄jali who gave us the knowledge about sounds in all creatures. Everything in this world is

connected with ‘Naada’ (Sound) and ‘Akṣara’ (letter). ‘Amantraṁ akṣaraṁ nāsti nāsti mūlaṁ anauṣadhaṁ ’ – There is no letter

that which is not Mantra and there is no herb that which is not medicine’. Just as a pharmacist knows the appropriate proportions

for medicinal combinations, only sages knows the perfect composition of letters to make them a Mantra.

Letters begin with ‘A’(अ)and end with ‘Ha’(ह). Śrī lalitā sahasranāma dhyāna ślōka says ‘Ahamityēva

vibhāvayē bhavānīṁ’ i.e. I am contemplating upon Goddess Bhavani like ‘This’ i.e. in Her form has been

described in the earlier part of the dhyāna slōka ‘Aruṇāṁ Karuṇā...’. Another meaning of this phrase is

‘Her form is Aham i.e. the form of all the letters beginning with ‘A’ and ending with ‘Ha’’. Hence, She is

known as ‘Mātr̥kāvarṇarūpiṇi’. Every letter has a presiding deity Mother form and a specific form of Śiva

liṅga. Pronunciation of each letter is distinct and awakens specific part within human body. In fact, this is also related to Yoga. In

Paṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyini, there are many aphorisms regarding sounds and notes. Paṇini propounds how sound emanates from

humans. When one wishes to speak, one’s mind takes the help of the mind to conjoin with fire in the stomach to produce sound.

There are four stages of speaking called Para, Paśyanti, Madhyama, and Vaikhari. In rocks and boulders there is only Para. Trees

The party entered holy Benares by boat along the Ganges. When Sri Ramakrishna's eyes fell on this city of Siva, where had accumulated for ages the devotion and piety of countless worshippers, He saw it to be made of gold, as the scriptures declare. He was visibly moved. During His stay in the city He treated every particle of its earth with utmost respect. One day, while on a boat ride on the Ganga, as they neared the Manikarnika Ghat, Sri Ramakrishna went into Samadhi. He had a vision in which He saw the awe-inspiring sight of a fair figure with dark locks of hair who is none other than Lord Siva whispering the ‘Taraka mantra’ into the ear of the Jivas lifting them from the funeral pyre along with the Mother of the Universe removing the bondages of the soul and freeing it from the cycle of trans-migratory mundane existence. Thus He realized the significance of the scriptural statement that anyone dying in Benares attains salvation through the grace of Siva. He paid a visit to Trailanga Swami, the celebrated monk, whom He later declared to be a real paramahamsa, a veritable image of Siva.

have Para and Paśyanti. Animals have Para, Paśyanti, and Madhyama. However, only humans have all four. In Saraswati Sūkta of Rig Vēda, the same is enunciated that there are four types of sounds but three of them are invisible. Another Mantra in Vēda mentions that there is one Vrishabha i.e. bull which has four horns. The bull is ‘Sabda’ and the horns are Para, Pashynati, Madhyama and Vykhari. Śrī lalitā sahasranāma śtōtra extolls ‘Divine Mother’ as ‘Paśyanti Para Dēvata Madhyama Vaikhari Rūpa’. On the day of Śrī Pan̄cami, ‘Divine Mother’ manifested as ‘Goddess Saraswati’. Let’s pray Goddess Saraswati on this auspicious Śrī Pan̄cami day, as mentioned in Brahmāṇḍa purāṇa and Dēvī bhāgavata and get Her blessings for here and hereafter!

śiva jñānaṁ – Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

The Compassionate Dakṣiṇāmūrti Part 15 1

Some philosophers felt that thumb and index finger represent the Jīva (self) and Paramatma (Supreme) respectively. Other three represent the three qualities (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) and three states (Wake, dream and sleep). Union of Jīva and Brahman is described in the state beyond these three called ‘Turīya’. Hence, ‘Chinmudra’ denotes the knowledge about leaving attachments to this world filled with these three qualities and attempting to obtain union with the Supreme who is beyond the three qualities. This symbol of Chinmudra denotes knowledge about hereafter.

Book in other hand of Dakṣiṇāmūrti – This signifies the entire worldly knowledge and is the form of all scriptures. Lord is the giver of both types of knowledge – worldly and beyond the worldly. In other two hands – Dhamaruka (drum that makes sounds) and Fire. Dhamaruka represents sounds whereas Fire represents light. Some forms of Dakṣiṇāmūrti are seen holding Vīna and Akṣamāla. While Vīna represents the knowledge of music and Yoga, Akṣamāla represents the knowledge of letters. Some forms also hold a pot of nectar. This represents the immortal Parabrahman and It’s nature. A demon named ‘Apasmāra’ is subdued under the foot of Dakṣiṇāmūrti. Apasmāra denotes ‘apasmriti’ - deficient memory. Ignorance and rememberance of mundane things that hinder the attainment of supreme knowledge is ‘apasmriti’. Subduing Apasmāra indicates the removal of ignorance. Blossoming of intelligence is possible only with the removal of ignorance.

As described above, the very embodiment of Dakṣiṇāmūrti is a treasurehouse of all forms of knowledge – mundane and spiritual. Just His very remembrance bestows knowledge. Dakṣiṇāmūrti is one who sits facing the ‘Dakṣina’ South side. Those who look at Him face North and have South on back.

North is the direction of knowledge and South is the direction of Yama, the God of Death. Those who look to Śiva shall not

look towards Yama. Dakṣiṇāmūrti’s vision spies Yama’s vision on us. Upaniṣads describe ignorance as death i.e. Lack of

Self-realization is death (Pramaadam Vai Mrutyumaham Braveemi). Dakṣiṇāmūrti is the one who commands even Yama.

Another meaning of the word ‘Dakshina’ is ‘the feeling of compassion’. That kindness which eliminates sorrow

completely is called ‘Dākṣinya’. In this world, only God has the power to eliminate sorrow completely. Embodiment of that

compassion (Dākṣinya) is Dakṣiṇāmūrti. Root cause of all distress is ignorance. Once ignorance is removed completely, one

gets free from sorrow. That compassionate form of knowledge which eliminates Avidya (nescience) completely is

Dakṣiṇāmūrti.

In His form, right ear is decorated with ‘Makara Kundala’ i.e. rings in crocodile form worn by men and left ear is adorned

with ‘Tātanka’ i.e. special form of ear rings worn by women. These ornaments corroborate that Dakṣiṇāmūrti is the unified

form of Śiva and Śakti. Siva and Śakti, who first appeared to the sages as two while dancing, now appeared as one unified

form. Hence, this form is not just His, but Her’s too. The same is propounded in Śrī Lalita Sahasranama as ‘……. Dakṣiṇāmūrti

Rūpiṇi sanakādi samārādhyā śiva jñāna pradāyini’.

Sage Vasishta got the vision and grace of Dakṣiṇāmūrti with severe penance and obtained Brahmavidya in Śrīkalahasti. An idol of Dakṣiṇāmūrti in the temple premises testifies the same. Here, Mother is known by the name ‘Jñāna Prasūnāmba’. This place is the epicenter of knowledge.

‘Rudrā! Yattē dakṣiṇaṁ mukhaṁ tēna māṁ pāhi nityaṁ’ – ‘O Rudra! Always protect us with your face turned towards the South side.’

Praising this primordial Guru, the epitome of knowledge, hymn composed by Śrī Ādi Śaṅkara is widely popular. Beginning with ‘Viśvaṁ darpaṇa dr̥śyamāna nagari tulyaṁ ..’ and each sloka ending with the line ‘Tasmai Śr Guru Mūrtaye Nama Idam Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrtayē’ reverberates with the emphasis of Advaita philosophy.

‘Guravē sarva lōkānāṁ bhiṣajē bhāva rōgināṁ | nidhayē sarva vidyānāṁ dakṣiṇāmūrtayē namaḥ ||’

Worship of Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti grants everything here and hereafter. At a worldly level, He grants the knowledge of mundane aspects and at a spiritual level, He grants the knowledge about the Supreme philosophy. (To be continued…)
