The KPI scores by A1TM

were amongst the highest that

the Highways Agency has

ever awarded and work was

completed within the specified

period.

The scheme also saw the use

of the Mabeys Barrier Guard

800, as well as the use of the

Red Speed Wireless Camera for speed safety enforcement.

out this year by A1TM for Cheshire County

Council and A1TM was equally delighted to

win it.

On a £900,000 contract, A1TM was given two hours

on a Friday night to set a contra-flow over the entire

Runcorn Bridge and two hours on the Monday

morning to return traffic to normal running conditions.

This was a daunting challenge for what is the largest

arch suspended-deck bridge in the United Kingdom.

Thanks to intense planning and thoroughly

professional implementation, A1TM accomplished it

in a record 45 minutes, allowing the overjoyed contractor, Kier Construction, to renew the expansion

joints and the waterproofing of the bridge deck.

Following the terrorist

attacks on Glasgow Airport,

A1TM was engaged by

Manchester Airport to

provide traffic management

for the new road markings

directing passengers to

secure drop-off points.

The main contractor was Bethals and A1TM’s in-

house traffic management

consultancy and design team

arranged various lane

closures in traffic sensitive

areas of the airport.

With good planning, disruption to air

passengers was kept to a minimum.

A1TM carried out a major

incident support role and

maintained the closures around

the clock for nearly a week.

Another difficult job well done.

For the 4th year running, Lancashire County

Engineering Services has

given A1TM the surface

dressing contract for the

whole of Lancashire, a

contract of £1.7 million.

The scheme covers the full

range of roads, from rural

lanes to high-speed dual

carriageways, and runs from

March to September.

With an estimated 6,000 tons

of chippings and 2,000

gallons of bitumen, the work

prolongs the life of ageing

roads, avoiding the need for

costly full reconstruction. All

sorts of traffic management techniques have to be

deployed – road closures,

lane closures, stop and go,

convoy working.

It is the team approach of

A1TM that has led to the

renewal of the contract.

Site meetings were called

between A1TM, Siemens,

Signways and Hull City Council.

Traffic Management drawings

were produced by A1TM for

all the sites, in the heavily

trafficked areas of Hull city

centre, and rural and other

urban roads.

“A1 plays an important role within the service delivery of the surface dressing contract and we are very happy to work with A1.”

Gareth Kelly of LCES

“A1 carried out an excellent service on both phases of the whole VMS Scheme. The Traffic Management was involved in many areas, all the work was carried out without any problems and the design element worked well to satisfy the local authority as to the level of disruption that would be caused. We thank A1 for their services.”

The Siemens contract for VMS

installation at Liverpool was valued

at £2.2 million.

A1TM provided Traffic

management for the city’s busiest

roads, allowing 112 VMS signs to

deliver a massive improvement in

journey times and to ease

congestion on vital roads, in the

year of the European Capital of

Culture.

A1TM was given the Traffic

profile job with massive

media interest.

A1TM did not disappoint the

high expectations.

Kier Construction won a

£3.6 million re-generation of

Bootle Canal Street Railway

Station.

The contract was to build a

new station and provide a

new pedestrian over bridge, to replace the existing

underpass that was un-

inviting to the public.

The works also saw a

rejuvenation of the entrance

car park and bus terminal to

the station.

A1 Supports Police Open Day for Second Year

When the Lancashire

Constabulary came to A1TM

and said “Let’s be having

you!” A1TM was delighted.

For the second year running,

A1TM was asked to provide Traffic Management at the

Summer Nights Open Day at

Force HQ.

The Force’s mission is to

make the county’s residents

feel safe and reassured and

A1 designed and implemented a road closure

for the lifting of the new 75

meter span steel bridge.

This was carried out at night

time due to the rail

possessions that had to be

put into place before the lift

could commence.

A1 also provided Traffic Management for a variety of

construction works on what

was a complex contract.

A1TM was a natural choice

to help the Force showcase

its professionalism, on a day

when only the best would

do.

A1TM designed and

implemented a Traffic

Management system which

utilised three of Preston’s

Park and Ride areas,

allowing the 3,500 visitors

to the HQ to enter and exit

in a safe and secure manner.

This, together with 65

direction signs and a

number of lane closures

on the A59 Liverpool

Road, resulted in minimal

disruption around the

village of Hutton, where the HQ is based.

(Eagle-eyed observers will note the MD of A1TM assisting the Police in promoting their “Bee Wise” child road safety campaign!)

“A1 provided an excellent and time efficient service, allowing us to meet the time scale set by the rail possession. The lift was then carried out without any complications.”

Dave Squirrel of Kier Construction

“A1 carried out an excellent and well-co-ordinated approach to the event.”

Northwich

A1TM is pleased to

announce its purchase of the

MASS Barrier System.

The barrier is a steel-formed

section, which offers a very

high protection workers and

road users. The units are 1.2

metres long and weigh 60 kg

each.

Their weight, size and bright

markings also serve to act as

a visual barrier.

“Ride Safe Back Safe” is a

motorcycle casualty reduction

programme created by the

Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, which is actively

supported by the Police and

which engages the riders

themselves in road safety

issues.

The need for this became

apparent during a Term

Maintenance contract for the

British Waterways Board,

when impatient road users

were observed moving signs

and cones, in order to drive

through closed areas of the

highway.

The noticeable increase in

safety at roadworks is ample

reward for the investment.

A1TM has been designing

and implementing road

closures, lane closures and

various other forms of traffic

control, some of which are in

the most remote parts of the

Northwest.

A1TM currently has a 65

weeks contract at the top of

Saddleworth Moor, and has

also been awarded a 56

weeks contract to assist lock

rebuilding on the River

Weaver at Cheshire.

In an effort to drive down motorcyclist injuries, a Ride

Safe Back Safe public event

was held at Fairhaven Lake

at Lytham.

The event was a phenomenal

success. In excess of 6,000

bikers attended and, amongst other things, were

treated to a display of stunt

riding. This was the second year

running that A1TM has

been asked by the LPfRS to assist with pedestrian and

vehicle control.

“A1 provided an excellent service, and without A1’s support the event would not be wonderful success. I would like to thank A1 for their continued support.”

Over the past four years, A1TM has

been designing and implementing

Traffic Management Systems on some

of Liverpool’s busiest and most

complex junctions, in partnership with

Tarmac.

These include The Rocket (junction Queens Dive and the M62), the Walton

Hall Avenue junction with Queens

Drive, the Rice Lane Intersection and

the Menlove Avenue Intersection.

Queens Drive was Liverpool’s first

ring-road, 6 ½ miles of circumferential dual carriageway, and Liverpool City

Council had been postponing work at

the junctions, fearing massive disruption

to the traveling public.

A1TM rose to the challenge, designing

and implementing complex Traffic

Management Systems which kept traffic disruption to a minimum.

Not one complaint was received over

the roadworks.”

A1TM is helping the generous people of Liverpool get on their running shoes and

take part in charity running events. These include the Sefton Park Women’s 10K,

the Tunnel 10K and the Big Heart 5K, to name but a few.

The charity season ends with the annual Santa Dash through Liverpool City Centre.

A1TM’s MD, Mr. Simon Gilford, is looking for volunteers from companies to enter

this event. Anyone wishing to enter into the Christmas spirit should contact Simon

at [email protected].

The running events need a massive amount of Traffic Management to be put in

place, with very short time scales so as to minimise public disruption.

“Without first-rate Traffic Management design, these events could not take place.”

Alan Rothwell

“A1 provided an excellent and speedy service, allowing a number of jobs to be completed early.”
