Eternal Light: A Requiem

The writing of a Requiem is a specialchallenge for any composer. The greatRequiems of the past by composers such asMozart, Verdi, Fauré and Duruflé interpret thesacred Requiem text literally, and represent a prayer for the salvation of the departed

soul(s). Howard Goodall’s EternalLight: A Requiem, by contrast, is intended to provide solace to the grieving.

Commissioned by MarkStephenson on behalf of LondonMusici to celebrate the orchestra’s20th anniversary, Eternal Light: A Requiem is a stand-alone choralwork that will have its Londonpremiere in November 2008 in anexciting collaborative version for choir, soloists, orchestra and dancers. The work, Eternal Light, commissionedby Sadler’s Wells Theatre, will beperformed by Rambert DanceCompany, its associate orchestraLondon Musici and Christ ChurchCathedral Choir, Oxford.

Howard’s fresh and unusual setting of theRequiem Mass also differs from moretraditional works by its use of English poetryinterspersed with fragments of Latin, combining the sacred and the secular. Textshave been drawn from John McCrae, FrancisQuarles, Mary Elizabeth Frye and Ann Thorp, among others. A recording of the work is duefor release on the EMI label in September, with soloists Natasha Marsh (soprano),daughter of Faber Music educationalcomposer, Lin Marsh, Alfie Boe (Tenor) andChristopher Maltman (baritone). Three otherchoral works by Howard are included on this

CD: his setting of The Lord is my shepherd, famous as the theme tune of the BBC’s Vicarof Dibley series; Love Divine, a hymn ofpraise set to Charles Wesley’s words; andfinally, his setting of Spared, Wendy Cope’spoem capturing the feelings of many peoplefollowing the destruction of the World TradeCentre in New York on September 11, 2001.

Howard Goodall: Requiem and exclusive Signing Faber Music is delighted to announce the signing earlier this year of an exclusive publishing agreement withHoward Goodall. A household name for his popular film and television scores – ranging from The Vicar of Dibley to Blackadder and Mr Bean – Howard is also very much in the public eye as the Government’s “Singing Ambassador”, masterminding the National Singing Programme, Sing Up (for which Faber Music is providing publishing services).

Faber Music already publishes a number of Howard’s most important choral works. As such, the newagreement marks the culmination of a burgeoning relationship, and alongside an ongoing commitment to hischoral and concert works the company will now handle the rights in Goodall’s large catalogue of film andtelevision works as well as his very popular stage musicals, which include Days of Hope and The Dreaming.

“For me, a modern Requiem is one thatacknowledges the terrible, unbearable loss andemptiness that accompanies the death of lovedones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated withplatitudes about the joy awaiting us in theafterlife. … Musical expression can I hopeprovide some outlet, some reflection, sometransportation, even some comfort….This wasto be a Requiem for the living, a Requiemfocussing on interrupted lives.”

As teachers and singers well know, it takes a unique type of person to be a vocalanimateur. Called upon to inspire andmotivate choirs of all age-ranges and levelsof experience, the vocal workshop leadernever really knows what to expect when theyenter the classroom or rehearsal venue!Creativity, adaptability, leadership, imagination, powerful communication andinsight – not to mention a mastery of vocaltechnique – are therefore essential skills ofthe job. Anyone who has ever experienced a session with Brenda Rattray will recognisethat she has these skills in abundance.

Frequently described as ‘inspirational’,‘spiritual’ and ‘uplifting’, Brenda Rattray is agospel singer and composer who has workedwith children and adults in all areas of thecommunity, from schools, mental institutions, hospitals and prisons, to London orchestrasand BBC choirs. In 2002, as part of theJubilee celebrations Brenda conducted a vastchoir in front of her Majesty the Queen, kick-starting a singing marathon event broadcastby the BBC. And she has even conductedand performed one of her compositions infront of 26,000 football supporters at theCharlton Atheletic football club! Her primaryobjective is to instill confidence in buddingsingers and remove inhibitions from thosewho consider themselves unable to sing, aswell as challenging and stimulating moreconfident singers.

Brenda’s route into workshop leading was, unsurprisingly, a little unconventional. At theage of seventeen she left school bored and alittle unsure about whether she wanted to bean actress, a teacher, an airhostess, a socialworker or a lawyer! Having bought The Stagemagazine, she found herself auditioning for apart in an exiled South African writer’s play,The Trial of Dedan Kimathi. During the six-month tour of England, Brenda’s gift as aworkshop leader was discovered by thecomposer and leader, Eugene Skeef. Hewatched Brenda lead the warm-up for acompany of 25 actors and musicians (ofwhich she was the youngest member), andthen offered her a position as voice tutor atthe Oval House Theatre. That was where itall started.

A prolific composer, until now the only work of Brenda’s widely available was The SmileBehind The Eyes (a song that deals withdeath not with sadness but liberation),included in Youth Music’s Singbook. But atlong last Brenda’s incredible talents have

been distilled into book form! The Joy of Singing is for all teachersand singing leaders in primary schools, secondary schools, youth groups andchurches. The 20 songs in the bookare incredibly varied in style, fromoriginal songs in African and gospelstyles, as well as arrangements ofwell-known spirituals Rocka My Soul,Wade In The Water, Kumbaya andSwing Low, Sweet Chariot. The songsrange in difficulty from simple roundsand unison songs to two, three andfour-plus parts, with many of theparts optional, ensuring there issomething for everyone here.

There are two CDs with the book, includingwarm-up ideas and backing and performancetracks for all of the songs, as well as trackswith individual parts to many of the songs.Additionally, the second CD is ‘enhanced’ to include lyrics to all the songs, for printingout or projecting on a whiteboard. Detailedteaching notes on each song, includingdiscussion points and extension activities are also included, making the material idealfor teaching Citizenship and PSHE in aclassroom or youth group setting. ChoralCouture

The acclaimed ChoralProgramme Series ismuch loved by choralconductors for itsbreadth of repertoire andpractical value-for-moneyeditions. The series hasbeen re-designed andnow features a stylishnew look across theentire range. Each

volume is now published in a handy “octavo” size(254x176mm) and with distinctive coloured covers tohelp distinguish between genre and upper and lowervoicing. Several new jazz and spiritual publicationswill shortly be available, to further expand thetremendous breadth of repertoire, as Gwyn Arch explains…

They tell me that the well-known Faber ChoralProgramme Series (CPS) is to be newly liveried, and that all the material in the public domain(i.e. non-copyright) is to be clothed in bright red for the mixed voice volumes and glowingorange for upper voices. I already knew therewere stirrings in the paint shop because lastyear two of my vocal jazz volumes, AutumnLeaves and All the Things You Are appeared in a fetching mid-green (for SSA) and a sort of greenish blue (for SATB). I now learn that this colour is called Teal, which I had thoughtwas a kind of duck. It must have a few blueishfeathers somewhere? Faber Music hasdecided to use these two colours forcollections of copyright songs so they willgrace my latest contribution to this series, a book called How High the Moon, againavailable for both SATB and female choirs. There are three arrangements in the book – theother two are Cole Porter’s Night and Day andDuke Ellington’s I’m Beginning to See the Light.

I’m always delighted to be given carte blancheto arrange from the wondrous aggregation of popular songs labelled ‘standards’, (in All the Things You Are there’s a Jerome Kernand a Stevie Wonder). I suppose the delightcomes from the knowledge that these songs are so well-written, their melodies so memorable and familiar, their lyrics sopolished and meaningful, and their harmonies(often) so original that they will survivewhatever the arranger inflicts on them, andhopefully even flourish. There are challenges,of course. How do you harmonise the versefor Night and Day? The words are promisinglyevocative – “Like the beat, beat, beat of thetom-tom when the jungle shadows fall…” The problem is a melody that opens with 33repetitions of the same note. Once that wassolved the remainder was more joy than relief.

For my money Night and Day is one of thefinest love songs of the 20th century.

I haven’t seen Faber Music’s new red andorange covers yet, but hope to do so whenattending the Association of British ChoralDirectors conference in Lincoln in late August. These are the colours designated for my twonew volumes of spirituals. Here was a differentsort of challenge, chiefly one of choice – over6000 spirituals have been catalogued. Thegreat majority are optimistic, happy, ebullient, certain of release from the burdens of slaveryand confident of an inevitable deliverance. Ifever there was a case for a collection of songsto be published in a red jacket! I wasn’t toknow it when I made my choices, but nowthink that the sentiments of all six spiritualsselected merit the red treatment.

Spirituals have simple melodies wedded toinnately beautiful words. They demandrespect. I have tried to interpret these songsfreely but rhythmically, veering towards agospel approach. Naturally I hope choirsenjoy singing these arrangements as much asI have enjoyed writing them.

New REleasesOriginal works fromAlexander L’Estrange

As consultant editor for the Choral BasicsSeries, Alexander L’Estrange is highlyacclaimed for his arranging talents throughnumerous folk, pop, jazz, music theatre, African and gospel songs. Less well-knownperhaps, but equally brilliant, are Alexander’sskills as a composer in his own right, of whichwe are beginning to see more through thebeautiful Christmas piece Lute Book Lullaby, and new choral publications Prayers for Peace,(an addition to the Faber New Choral WorksSeries), and Love’s philosophy. Faber aredelighted to be publishing these original works from Alexander.

Lute Book Lullaby was Alexander’s first FaberMusic-published composition. Commissionedand recorded by the fabulous professionalchoir Tenebrae, with director Nigel Short, it isone of a number of works he has written for the group. Written for SATB choir and organ, its compelling simplicity combined with abeautifully floating soprano solo make it a delightfully contemplative piece, ideal for Christmas.

Love’s philosophy is a set of three piecesavailable as part of the Choral Basics Series(in versions for upper voices only and theSA/men format), and for SATB choir as a newaddition to the Choral Programme Series. Thepieces will also be available in a beautifulsetting for solo voice, due for publication thisAutumn, and we are delighted that all threesongs have been selected for the newAssociated Board Singing Syllabus, whichcomes into effect from January 2009. The setcomprises three love songs; She walks inbeauty (Lord Byron), Now sleeps the crimsonpetal (Tennyson) and Love’s philosophy(Shelley), and is inspired by Alexander’s love of English song, in particular the works ofGerald Finzi and Roger Quilter, who set wordsby Shakespeare and Wordsworth, amongnumerous other poets.

Alexander is now receiving new commissionrequests on a regular basis from high-profilechoirs and ensembles. A new anthem calledLet all the world in every corner sing wascomposed for performances in St. Paul'scathedral last year, along with On Eagles'wings, a delightful work for upper voices, written for St David’s Cathedral girl choristers, and premiered by them at this year’s St David’sFestival in May. Also new is a secularcommission from the Oxford Pro MusicaSingers, e-Motion, inspired by the concept of using computers to compose, with words by Alexander’s wife, musician and inspirationfor Love’s philosophy, Joanna Forbes.

Sing Up is the Music Manifesto NationalSinging Programme, led and delivered byYouth Music with partners Abbott Mead Vickers,Faber Music and The Sage Gateshead.Representing probably the most significantinvestment in singing in our lifetime, Sing Upaims to put singing at the heart of every primaryschool in England by 2011.

Faber Music, as the partner appointed todeliver the resource for the programme, produces a collection of songs that reflect a contemporary approach to singing andmusic, presented online in the Song Bank(www.singup.org) with selected songs beingprinted in the termly magazine Sing Up. Now reaching over 10,000 registered primaryschools nationwide, plus hundreds of otherregistrants including nearly 600 freelancemusic leaders and over 500 music servicesand organisations, the resource is drivenforward by the responses of the people trying out the songs with children every day.

Now containing over 150 songs, provided withscores, activity notes, accompaniments andaudio tracks (performance, echo and backing),the Song Bank is navigable using either the Ato Z directory, or the Advanced Search facility

— you can search by Key Stage, Year Group,Song Style or Curriculum Links.

Alongside existing published songscontributed by commercial publishers, including Schott Music, A & C Black, Out ofthe Ark Music and Kevin Mayhew Ltd, and the selection of well-loved traditional songs,Faber Music showcases brand new modernworks commissioned especially for Sing Up,such as Where on Earth is Rutland? by Richard Stilgoe, written to help children learn the counties of England, and Song of the fish, a signed song written by RichardSisson as part of Music and the Deaf’s project‘Sign Up’ (www.matd.org.uk). Unique songslike these are highlighted specially in issues ofSing Up. Further commissions are projectedfor the coming years of the programme.

We have come a long way since the launch of the online resource in November 2007. At nearly one year old, the Song Bank isresponsive to the teachers and music leadersusing it on a daily basis. With the number of visits to www.singup.org per day continuingto increase (over 800 visits daily in July 2008),there is no shortage of people to approach for feedback.

“We've had great success with Believe with ourschool choir and No wars will stop us singingand Ain't no mountain high enough in SingingAssembly, particularly with the boys. They lovesinging in harmony and it gives us a real buzzto hear 350 children really going for it. We nowget such a positive reaction from the wholeschool in Singing Assembly and the childrenreally look forward to their Wednesdaymorning sing! The children even made ourOfsted Inspector a bit emotional with No warswill stop us singing back in March!”

Often people write in by email, or leavecomments on a feedback page of thewebsite. We rely on comments from thepublic to retain the ‘bespoke’ nature of theresource. Thankfully, people who use theresource are vocal about what does anddoes not work for them.

It’s fantastic for us to hear directly fromchildren — we hope the process of choosingsongs, playing audio tracks and looking atthe music will be shared and enjoyed byteachers and pupils alike.

If teachers report particular benefits, we canhighlight those benefits for other teachersand offer related songs to develop practicesand techniques that are happening naturally. It is an ancient, natural human tendency tolearn and express through singing — atendency that, before Sing Up, ran the risk of being forgotten for today’s children.

There is increasingly positive feedbackflooding in about young boys’ experience ofsinging. Helping to dispel the preconceptionthat singing is just for girls is a fundamentalaim of Sing Up.

Sing Up believes that singing has the powerto change lives and help build strongercommunities. Faber Music is thrilled to be apartner in this programme which is working togive all primary-aged children the excitingopportunity to experience singing every day.

A NewAddition forLanguage ofSong seriesAward-winning books for advanced

singers coming soon

Singing in foreign languages can be a scarybusiness; the problem of pronunciation anddeciphering what the song is about can proveto be a challenge. Whilst the ability to do so isa much needed skill for singers, few vocaltraining resources tackle this aspect effectivelyin one book. To address this problemprofessional singers and ABRSM examinersNicola-Jane Kemp and Heidi Pegler’s TheLanguage of Song is a series of gradedsongbooks carefully selected to developthese skills, and give the teacher and pupil all the tools required to introduce the studentsinger to the richness of Classical songrepertoire in European languages.

The series has proved to be extremelypopular and well-respected among singersand teachers alike, and the authors weredelighted to win ‘Best EducationalPublication’ at the Music IndustriesAssociation Awards in October 2007. A newaddition to the series this autumn is a set ofadvanced books, available in editions forhigh, medium and low voices. As with theElementary and Intermediate books, theAdvanced editions come with two CDsproviding the text for each song spoken by anative speaker – expert language consultantswho specialise in coaching singers – as wellas including a recording of each song

accompaniment by acclaimed pianist IainFarrington. These volumes focus on songs inItalian, German, French and Russian, andmany of the songs have been selected forinclusion in the new ABRSM and TrinityGuildhall exam syllabuses.

“The Language of Song is an initiative thatshould be welcomed by all singing teachersand students. For the first time here are all thenecessary tools gathered in one package. Apartfrom the translations (both line-by-line andidiomatic) and the phonetic guide topronunciation, the demonstration texts on theaccompanying CD are beautifully andexpressively spoken. The songs are well-chosen, including less familiar as well as well-known material, and form an excellentintroduction to the repertoire. Add in the music-minus-one accompaniments and youhave the perfect do-it-yourself manual of song.”

Roger Vignoles

“These volumes are quite simply the best Ihave encountered in their field - which, in away, is not difficult since they are unique! How I wish I was just starting out again: theselection of songs is perfectly balanced andis certain to give pleasure to teacher andpupil alike, encouraging not only interest butalso further exploration.”
