Andrzej uawski (Polish: [andj uwafski]; born 22November 1940)[1] is a Polish lm director and writer. He was born in Lww, Poland (now Ukraine). uawskihas often gone against mainstream commercialism in hislms, and has enjoyed success mostly with European art-house audiences. In the late 1950s, he studied cinema in France. His sec-ond feature The Devil (1972) was banned in Poland, anduawski went to France. After the success of That MostImportant Thing: Love in 1975, he returned to Polandwhere he spent two yearsmakingThe Silver Globe (1988).The work on this lm was interrupted by the Polish au-thorities. After that, uawski moved to France wherehe became known for controversial and violent art-houselms. uawski is also known for his work with certainspecic actresses including Romy Schneider, Isabelle Ad-jani and Sophie Marceau. His lms have received 16 awards at various internationallm festivals. uawski has also written several novels, for example: Il tait Un Verger, Lity Br (a.k.a. La FortForteresse), W Oczach Tygrysa, and Ogrd Mioci.

1 Careeruawski was an assistant of Andrzej Wajda.[2] When hissecond lmDiabe was banned in Poland[3] he decided tomove to France, where he made L'Important c'est d'aimer(1975) with Romy Schneider.[4]

After returning to Poland he worked for two years on alm which the authorities did not allow him to nish (Onthe Silver Globe), based on a book by his great-uncle Jerzyuawski.[1] Since then he has lived and worked mostly inFrance, making art lms.Being a maverick who always deed mainstream com-mercialism, uawski enjoyed success mostly with theEuropean art-house audiences. His wild, imaginative, and controversial pictures have received 16 awards at var-ious international lm festivals. He also wrote the novelsIl tait Un Verger, Lity Br (a.k.a. La Fort Forteresse),W Oczach Tygrysa, and Ogrd Mioci.[1]

He was in a relationship for fteen years with the Frenchactress Sophie Marceau, with whom he made four lmsover a 15-year period (L'Amour braque, Mes nuits sontplus belles que vos jours, La Note bleue, La Fidelit). Theybroke up in 2001.[3]

In 2006 he was the Head of the Jury at the 28th Moscow

    International Film Festival.[5]

2 On the Silver GlobeAndrzej uawski had always wanted to lm his grandun-cles masterwork and saw the oer as a unique oppor-tunity to achieve that aim. uawski devoted over twoyears to the task of adapting the rst two volumes to thescreen. Between 1975 and 1977, he wrote the screenplayand lensed the lm on various locations around Poland,as well as Crimea, the Caucasus Mountains and even theGobi Desert. In spring 1977, however, the project came to a sudden haltwith the appointment of the hardline ideologue JanuszWilhelmi as the Vice-Minister of Culture. Perceiving theSelenites battle against the Szerns as a thinly-veiled alle-gory of the Polish peoples struggle with totalitarianism,Wilhelmi shut down the lming, which was 80% com-plete and ordered all materials destroyed.uawski went back to France to nd that the reels ofunnished lm were preserved, along with costumes andprops, by the Polish lm studio and archives and by mem-bers of the lms cast and crew. A passage of anothereight years was required, as glasnost and perestroika be-gan to thaw the ColdWar-dominated Eastern Europe, foruawski to be able to return again to Poland and editthe still-unnished remnants into a 166-minute rough ap-proximation of what the nished lm might have been.On the Silver Globe premiered at the Cannes Film Festi-val inMay 1988, with some critics proclaiming it a ruinedmasterpiece.
