TRANSCRIPT
The year is almost over, the AGMs have been
held and the incoming officers elected. If you
haven’t done so already, now is the time to get
your incoming club officers registered with
Toastmasters international. And now the
incoming committee can spend the rest of the
Toastmasters year working with the outgoing
committee, and learning their roles ready to take
over in July.
With only a month
and a week to go, it
is time to finish off
the last goals for the
DCP: the last few
speeches for those
completing
educational awards,
the last few projects
for those working
toward leadership awards. And let’s not forget
the all-important membership criteria. There are
several clubs on the brink of distinguished or
better if they can just get another one or two
members. If that also means they achieve another
goal for ‘four more members’ or ‘four more new
members’ then so much the better.
It’s easy to start with high hopes and lofty goals,
but what matters is how we finish.
Best of luck to all of you for this very important
last month!
Jonathan

Area International Speech and Evaluation Contests
We could not have asked for a better day in
Palmerston North to hold the Division
conference.
Carol Wald (J6 Area Governor) as MC for the
day warmly welcomed us all to the International
Pacific College, followed by a welcome from the
assistant dean - Neil Bond.
The evaluation contestants were challenged with
an inspirational speech by Matthew Colcombe
from Division E.
Contestants from the evaluation contest: L to R Pat
Denbey (J1), Josh Deadman (J5), Renee Corner (J2),
Helen Cartmell (J7), Carolyn Lankow (J6), Bruce
Clarke (J3), Neville Isherwood (J4).
Lunch was held in the dining hall of the College
and a chance for catching up on what has been
going on around the division.
After lunch a fascinating educational session on
Intercultural Communication with Dana Taylor,
from the IPC Tertiary Institute.
Dana had some interesting exercises for us to try
which will help members who do not have
English as their first language. Thinking about
where sounds are made and helping someone
make those sounds to pronounce words correctly
was a challenge. Some excellent feedback on this
session, that members had new information they
could take back to their clubs.
Dana getting us to make the sounds for ‘p’ and ‘b’
The international speech contest was next, with
an amazing selection of speeches, inspirational
and at times quite amusing. Michelle Gerwitz
was the chair and made the audience cheer and
welcome the speakers to the stage, so that they
were spurred on to give their best performance to
date.
The atmosphere was electric as the speakers took
the stage as the cheering and clapping not only
energised the speaker but the audience as well.

the Geoffrey Moss Trophy for the highest

base of 10.
A wonderful attendance from around the division
and a packed room made the event so much
better.
Thank you to Cath Cherry who attended with the
District Supplies bookshop, an opportunity for
all members to browse and look at the manuals
and other supplies available. Division J members
took advantage to
make purchases
on the day.
A very special

Theme: Toastmasters Unmasked
The Friday 8 May, the evening programme gave
all the members a chance to met the candidates
for the upcoming district roles. There were
several positions contested that would required a
vote from the clubs at the District Council
meeting on Saturday.
Saturday 9 May is an early start as there are
many activities on:
Waiting for the banner parade to start – the
Division J representatives posed for a photo.
Under the watchful eye of MC John O’Leary
DTM the formalities started with the District
Team taking the stage.
After morning tea members could attend one of 4
educational breakout sessions –
Give your evaluations life – with Andrew Pass
Words Unmasked – with Debbie Raphael
Wrapping up leadership – with Laurel Francis
Talking with your mouth full – with Morgan
McArthur (1994 Toastmasters World Champion
of Public Speaking).
After lunch we had the District Council meeting
where we were pleased to see Gregory Graham
DTM be appointed unopposed as the incoming

District 72 Bi-Annual Convention 8 – 10 May
Held at: Waipuna Hotel and Convention Centre, Auckland
Sunday morning started with a truly inspirational
speaker and amazing role model – Barbara
Kendell. What a fascinating speech and a
remarkable life.
A second round of educationals for a chance to
attend a different session – Morgan McArthur
regaled us with humour and good common sense
as he spoke about the 5 practical P’s for Public
Speaking – including showing us his skill at
push-ups.
The it was time for the international speech
contest and contest Chair Michelle Gerwitz got
us in the mood again by making us practise our
cheering as the contestants walked down the
stairs to the stage. Tony Burns was representing
Division J in this contest, which was filled with
the best 9 speakers the District has, a very tough
contest indeed.
International Speech Contest winners: L to R - 2nd
Kingi Biddle; 1st Matthew Colcombe; 3
rd Arun
Chaudhari
The winner of the Maurice Hayes cup for the
Most Entertaining Speaker went to Kingi Biddle.
