Stoke-On-Trent Council will be supporting the Oral Health Foundation “Mouth Cancer Action Month” campaign again this year. Mouth cancer is one of the very few cancers which are predicted to increase further in the coming years. Currently, rates in Stoke-on-Trent are higher than the national average. It is more common in people aged over 40, particularly men, where it is the 10th most common form of cancer, however; is becoming more common in younger people and women. It kills more people than testicular and cervical cancers combined. Mouth cancer can affect anybody with just over 90% of cases linked to lifestyle. People who smoke and / or drink alcohol to excess increase their risk by up to 30 times. Although some people think that chewing smokeless tobacco is safer than smoking, it is actually more dangerous. It contains twice as much nicotine as an average cigarette. Poor diet and the human papilloma virus (HPV) are also leading risk factors. Current advice is to look out for any unusual signs in the mouth including: * Red or white patches in the mouth * Ulcers that do not heal within 2-3 weeks * Unusual lumps, swellings or changes in the mouth, lips or throat. “If in doubt, get checked out” All health professionals, including community pharmacists and their staff, (particularly those within Healthy Living Pharmacies) are in an ideal position to raise awareness about mouth cancer.

you to download and display. Pharmacy staff can signpost customers with relevant lifestyle issues for appropriate support such as smoking and alcohol and can advise access to dental services or the GP if required.

For further information and resources to help you raise awareness about mouth cancer, go to www.mouthcancer.org. A range of general oral health leaflets, displays and teaching resources are also available from Stoke-on-Trent City Council Health Improvement Resource Service at www.healthresources.ssotp.nhs.uk.

Please support this campaign.

CAMPAIGN SUCCESS IN 2015/16 – WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Last year campaign was a success. We thank you all for the tremendous support and contribution to the

programme. The results are looking very positive and here some highlights from the last year campaign:

Additional 1.136 million pharmacy visits (vs. 1.08 million the previous year) directly attributable to the

campaign;

Up to 75% of key audiences recognising the campaign;

The campaign was particularly impactful among over 75s and among lower socioeconomic groups;

People claim to have changed their behaviour as a result of the campaign messages;

The local NHS and local authorities valued the campaign and used it: over 7,000 users registered on our

campaign resource centre, making over 16,000 downloads and ordering over 200,000 items;

86% of pharmacists were aware of the campaign and 66% displayed the campaign resources; 31% reported

that more people came in for advice about staying well;

The campaign generated £2.5 million of value from commercial sector partners and over £700,000 media value

from PR.

PSNC News

NPA - National Pharmacy Association

Last week the government announced cuts to pharmacy funding for the years 2016/18. However, there will be a debate and a vote on Wednesday 2 November, in the House of Commons which could determine further the future of pharmacy. This is an important opportunity to maintain pressure on the Government to reconsider its position. It is now increasingly more important to contact MPs and ensure that they are supporting your pharmacy by taking part in the debate. An easy way to contact your MP is through our lobby tool: https://lnkd.in/dKNMX7M We have a timely opportunity here in our fight to save community pharmacy, and by working together we can make a difference. lobby.supportyourlocalpharmacy.com lobby.supportyourlocalpharmacy.com lobby.supportyourlocalpharmacy.com

Pharmacy teams beat last year's NHS flu vaccination total Pharmacy teams have now surpassed the total number of flu vaccinations that they delivered during last year in less than eight weeks. Last year the total number of vaccines administered in community pharmacies under the national Flu Vaccination Service was 595,467. Data received last week from PharmOutcomes and Sonar Informatics has confirmed that pharmacy teams have now exceeded the 600,000 mark, although the total number of vaccinations administered will be even higher as some pharmacy teams are not using the electronic systems to record administration of vaccines.

Parliament to debate pharmacy contract

imposition

PSNC, LPCs and the other pharmacy organisations have been busy

briefing the Shadow Health team and other MPs in preparation

for an Opposition Day debate on community pharmacy that will

be held on Wednesday 2nd November at around 12.40pm.

Whilst Opposition debates and any votes are not binding and so cannot themselves force policy changes, they do form part of the bigger picture. Contractors may wish to help by tweeting their MPs to remind them of the debate.

Reminder: claiming payment for the national Flu

Vaccination Service

Community pharmacy contractors who have provided the

national flu service during the month of October are reminded of

the need to claim payment for the service and reimbursement of

vaccine costs as part of the end of month prescription bundle

submission process. The claim is made by submitting a completed

copy of the Community Pharmacy Seasonal Influenza Vaccination

claim form to the Pricing Authority with the pharmacy's

prescription bundle.

NHS Prescription Services webinars NHS Prescription Services is holding webinars on the Flu Vaccination Service on various dates over the next four weeks. The webinars will cover how to register for/de-register from providing this service and correctly submitting claims for payment.
