Forty years ago at this time, I was interviewing for a job at a small town north of Salina. I knew that I was a person who could be happy anywhere there was food and water, and that I also had some “stay” in me but, I certainly never imagined I’d be staying for forty years and loving it! That’s exactly what happened, though. I have always considered myself a lucky person. I have also believed that to a large ex-tent a person makes his or her own luck. Preparation and decision skills have a great deal to do with luck also. I am so lucky to soon have four grandsons. Good luck is not the only kind, though. Over the last several years I have developed motor nerve problems over which I have no control. I know that we all occasionally get a kick out of it if I stumble in class. That doesn’t bother me much. However, my inability to quickly and efficiently write comments as I grade papers has been terribly frustrating. And so I find myself at a point when it seems appropriate to leave the po-sition I’ve held and enjoyed tremendously. Obviously, circumstances that I am not in charge of helped me make my decision, which was neither easy nor arrived at lightly. I will miss this place, these students, these colleagues, the supportive parents, and others of this community who have made my time here so very enjoyable and fulfilling. This is a close-knit community with a very close-knit school. So much about the school has changed. Enrollment has grown. Technology has exploded. Activities and classes have expanded. The physical plant has been modernized, but throughout all this transition, the comradeship of the students has been a constant. Classes changed over the years. The way the membership of each class treats its fellow students, however, has not changed much. The biggest portion of the enjoyment I experienced has been at the hands of the stu-dents. Space does not allow my telling of the myriad stories that I will always enjoy recalling. There are so many young people who have had a profound effect on me. Some of those are now in their fifties, and some are still just barely in their teens. I have always felt a level of pride in what we, as a faculty, have had a hand in producing. As I leave, I wish to thank the great facul-ty and dedicated administrators who have inspired me to be the best I could be and the students who worked hard enough to allow me to think that my work accomplished some good. I am en-thusiastically anticipating where I may be headed, and at the same time, profoundly saddened to be leaving.
