Rooted in the Shariah Centred on comprehensive development

spiritual need Balanced human development Striving for knowledge and economic
advancement Emphasis on good governance Development for all humanity, not just
Muslims
The Islamic Vision of DevelopmentIDB is to be driven by a vision of development inspired by Islam
The Islamic vision of human development is not for the IDB alone to realise, but the IDB can play a critical role as an instrument of the
OIC.
A Vision for Human Dignity
VISION“ By the year 1440 Hijrah IDB shall have
become a world-class development bank, inspired by Islamic principles,
that has helped significantly transform the landscape of comprehensive human development in the Muslim world and
helped restore its dignity”.
IDB as a “world class” organisation IDB as a bank based on “Islamic principles” IDB’s commitment to the “comprehensive
development” of the people
A Vision for Human Dignity
MISSION“ The Mission of IDB is to promote
comprehensive human development, with a focus on the priority areas of
alleviating poverty, improving health, promoting education,
improving governance and prospering the people”.
Transformation of IDB mandate Widening of IDB development focus Profound implications: mindset,
development strategies, expertise and skills capacity, organisational structure and resources
A Vision for Human Dignity
IDB Group shall be a Corporate Khalifah IDB Group shall be proactive IDB Group shall seek cooperation and
support of governments concerned IDB Group shall ascertain needs and
aspirations of target communities IDB Group shall consult closely with the
stakeholders of proposed programs IDB Group shall encourage local initiatives IDB Group general approach shall be to
communicate the ‘how to’ rather than ‘gift’
General Operating Principles
A Vision for Human Dignity
Strategic Thrusts Reform IDB
Alleviate Poverty
Promote Health
Universalize Education
Prosper the people
Empower the Sisters of Islam without breaching the tenets of Islam
Expand the Islamic Financial Industry
Facilitate Integration of IDB Member Country Economies Among Themselves and with the World
Improve the Image of the Muslim World
A Vision for Human Dignity
Reform IDB – Strategic Thrust The changes in the strategic environment impinging upon IDB
Changes to the IDB Vision and Mission that the Commission proposes multiply the demands on
the Bank and make reform imperative.
Adjustments to the focus and priorities of the Bank, and the additional responsibilities the Bank is being asked to undertake also require changes to IDB organisation, and a very substantial enhancement of its capacity and resources.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Alleviate Poverty – Strategic Thrust Alleviating poverty must continue to be the most important comprehensive human development focus of the IDB Group, until poverty is no longer a prominent feature of the Muslim landscape.
Nothing detracts from wellbeing and dignity like poverty.
Along with poverty there is hunger, malnutrition, illiteracy, disease, crime and instability.
Poor people are not respected. They are looked down upon.
The Muslim world cannot regain its dignity and esteem if so many of its inhabitants are destitute.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Promote Health – Strategic Thrust This Key Strategic Thrust should address the most severe and debilitating threats to health in the Muslim world. These are:
Child mortality Maternal health Diseases including HIV/AIDS and malaria, Environmental sustainability (access to safe drinking water and sanitation).
A Vision for Human Dignity
Universalize Education – Strategic Thrust
IDB should set a target of universalizing both primary as well as secondary education by 1440 Hijrah.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Prosper the People – Strategic Thrust
All countries, whether rich or poor, Muslim or non-Muslim, desire greater prosperity.
The role that IDB will be essentially in the form of providing policy recommendations
and advice, consultancy services and as a knowledge bank.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Empower the Sisters of Islam – Strategic Thrust
The Sisters of Islam are the greatest reservoir of untapped wealth and unfulfilled dignity that the Muslim world has.
In a few Muslim countries, women are more economically, socially and politically
empowered than even in some Western nations.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Expand the Islamic Financial Industry – Strategic Thrust
Islamic banking and finance is a signature product of IDB. They are virtually
synonymous with each other.
IDB also needs to dramatically increase its financial resources and operations if it is to successfully implement the many added responsibilities that are being contemplated for it.
The expansion and improvement of the Islamic financial industry is, therefore, a matter of considerable urgency.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Facilitate Integration of Member Country Economies – Strategic Thrust Economic cooperation and integration in the face of globalization is absolutely essential for IDB Member Countries
It enables national economies to reduce economic barriers against each other, synergize on each other’s strengths and potentials for mutual benefit, and opens new
doors for wealth creation.
It also protects the weaker economies against the predatory pressures of the strong.
A Vision for Human Dignity
Improve the Image of the Muslim World – Strategic Thrust
Terrorism notwithstanding, the battle for the Muslim world’s image will be essentially won or lost on the battlefield of comprehensive development.
If the Muslim world, OIC and IDB are able to realize the Vision of IDB to a significant
degree by 1440 Hijrah, the image of Muslims will improve dramatically
