The Science That Helps Validate the Use

There have been manyresearch studies conductedthat have proven theeffectiveness of HydroWorxaquatic training for running,

exercise, weight loss and rehabilitation.

Doctors W. Matthews Silvers and DennisDolny conducted several conclusivehydrotherapy research experiments at theUniversity of Idaho. In the first study, it wasfound that HydroWorx products can createa metabolic and cardiovascularenvironment as stressful as traditionalland-based treadmills but with reducedjoint stress—a hallmark feature ofHydroWorx aquatic exercise.

In follow-up studies, positive results werealso verified with factors such as maximaloxygen consumption, heart rate, ventilation, blood lactate, leg stride rate andlength, and perception of effort. Each studyconfirmed the effectiveness and equivalentresponses with aquatic fitness vs. land-based treadmills.

For weight loss, led by Dr. Stephen Crouse, and a team of Texas A&M scientists, conducted two important experimentscomparing land-based treadmill exercise toHydroWorx exercise. The studies werecompleted with 32 overweight adults overa three month period. Each participant inthe study was over 40 years of age.

The study showed that:

HydroWorx pool exercise burns morecalories per minute than land treadmillexercise when walking or jogging at 4mph or above (jets at 50% or above).

Those subjects using the HydroWorxpool gained more lean muscle massthan those using the land treadmill (jetsat 50% or above).

Subjects lost a higher body fatpercentage using the HydroWorx poolthan they did using the land treadmill(jets at 50% or above).

4 out of 5 subjects preferred exercisingin the HydroWorx pool rather than onthe land treadmill.

The study results significantly proved thatthe overall health and fitness of theparticipants utilizing HydroWorx productswas improved without the joint trauma and“wear and tear” that one normallyexperiences working out on land.

In addition to obtaining the samecardiovascular benefits, burning morecalories and gaining leaner muscle mass onthe underwater treadmill, 4 out of 5research participants preferred exercisingon the HydroWorx than on a land treadmill!

How is it different than normal water exercise or exercising on land?

While walking or running on the underwater treadmill, it’s a virtually pain-freeexperience. Your reduced body weight eases the pressure on your joints so you canmove freely.

The hydrostatic pressure of water naturally decreases inflammation and increasescirculation, never leaving you with muscle soreness after an intense workout.

The resistance or viscosity of water helps you burn more calories. The extra resistanceof water provides up to 14 times more resistance than air.

You can really dial up the intensity and calories burned by turning on the X80’sresistance jet. Full-out running interval programs and strenuous upper body workoutsare possible.

The risk of re-injury during rehabilitative conditioning is greatly minimized by water’ssupportive properties.

Our deep tissue massage allows you to ease sore muscles and manipulate scar tissueat the end of a long or intense workout.

Adding an amenity like the X80 to yourpool is a great way to increase aquaticutilization by your students, faculty, and thesurrounding community. The X80 has beenproven to increase personal training andrehabilitation potential for a pool and createa “buzz” about the pool that you may havenever seen before.

By integrating an X80, you will be gaining acompetitive advantage over othercommunity wellness facilities that do notutilize this amazing new technology. Alarge percentage of the population does notwork out because it is painful or they areafraid of becoming injured. Once potentialmembers hear you have a way to exercisein a pain free environment without the fearof injury or the promise of muscle sorenessthe next day, they will be lining up to try it!

When you consider that an X80underwater treadmill can be leased for$399/ month, you can quickly see that ifyour average membership cost is$50/month, you would only need to obtainand retain 8 new members (total!) to payfor this addition to your facility.

15

Page 16: A Toolkit for the College & High School Aquatic Facility

In addition to increasing pool utilization, other facilities have seen great participation andfinancial success by offering small group training or personal training boot camps on theX80 underwater treadmills. One-on-one or in a group setting, members typically love theworkout they get in the water but desire the attention and structure of a program. At aYMCA, customers typically pay $40- 45/session for personal training or $10-15/personfor a small group aquatic boot camp of 5 people. In a fitness club setting we’ve seenindividuals pay $75/ session for personal training and $20-25/session for small grouptraining. Through successful marketing to your community members, the opportunitiesare limitless!

In addition to performance and weight loss, HydroWorx products are utilized worldwidefor rehabilitation and sports medicine. By renting your pool and X80 underwatertreadmill(s) to physical therapy clinics in the area, you can obtain new medicalpartnerships and simultaneously expose your facility to new members as they progresstoward fitness or wellness after their rehabilitation.
