Max is a 9-year-old German Shepherd/Husky cross weighing in a more than seventy pounds. Malcolm is a five-year-old miniature poodle. They both have lumbar disc disease, which is common in the middle-aged poodle and uncommon in the large and giant breeds. The disc is a shock absorber that lives between every two vertebrae (back bones) in the spinal column, from head to toe. The disc is composed of an outer envelope holding a jelly-like substance. In some dogs the envelope becomes old and brittle while the dog is still young and active. In these dogs, some normal activity, such as jumping off the couch, will cause the disc to rupture and release the material inside. That material has no place to go except up into the spinal cord. How much damage it causes depends upon how much material gets released and how suddenly it rams into the spinal cord. The spinal cord runs through a narrow canal in the backbone and can’t move away from the pressure. In both Max’s and Malcolm’s cases almost every disc in their backs had, over time, been affected. The end result was that both dogs have no feeling in their toes or reflexes in their hind legs. This is the best of times because neither dog was put to sleep for humane reasons, as would have happened just a few years ago. We still use drugs in the cortisone family as well as pain killers in the treatment plan but the new element that we now have is the therapeutic laser; and that has made the difference. We can’t save them all. The spinal cord is composed of many nerves that are, of course, living cells. If the pressure on that is enough to cause many of them to die, then the effect is the same as if you cut a telephone wire in half; there is no message going down the line. No feeling, no stimulation of muscles, no reflexes to allow the legs to be useful. Since the MaxFund has started using the laser, we have been able to restore use to many cats and dogs with damaged nerve supply, some which we would have considered to have a poor prognosis and almost a dozen that we would have considered hopeless. Max and Malcolm look like both are going to join this precious list. Max, the shepherd mix, has been in treatment longer and will probably be in a new adopted home before you receive this newsletter. Malcolm still happily running around in his cart, has restored function in one of his hind legs and is steadily improving on the other. Yes, these are the best of times. Veterinary work is always demanding and sometimes depressing. But it becomes outright fun when we are able to help wonderful guys like Max and Malcolm and then find them loving homes. We can wish that we could be allowed to treat them earlier, before their condition became so desperate, but the human problem seems even more difficult to solve than the medical problems. Max

A TALE OF TWO DOGGIESBy Bill Suro, VMD

This is the best of times. This is the worst of times. I’mreporting on two doggies that superficially seem tohave nothing in common except belonging to the same

species and both having names beginning with the letterM. But Max and Malcolm both have medical conditionsthat are very similar. The fact that the MaxFund is handlingboth cases simultaneously is a real longshot coincidence. The fact that both dogs have a good chance of not onlysurviving, but of being adopted and living a fairly normalhappy pet life, is a miracle.

This is the worst of times because nobody relishes the jobof caring for a dog paralyzed from the waist down, muchless two of them. This is especially true when in each casex-rays revealed that the problem started years ago, happenedrepeatedly, and if treatment had been started earlier, paralysis could have been avoided.

Max is a 9-year-old German Shepherd/Husky cross weighingin a more than seventy pounds. Malcolm is a five-year-oldminiature poodle. They both have lumbar disc disease, which is common in the middle-aged poodle and uncommonin the large and giant breeds. The disc is a shock absorberthat lives between every two vertebrae (back bones) in thespinal column, from head to toe. The disc is composed ofan outer envelope holding a jelly-like substance. In somedogs the envelope becomes old and brittle while the dog isstill young and active. In these dogs, some normal activity, such as jumping off the couch, will cause the disc to ruptureand release the material inside. That material has no placeto go except up into the spinal cord. How much damage itcauses depends upon how much material gets released andhow suddenly it rams into the spinal cord. The spinal cordruns through a narrow canal in the backbone and can’tmove away from the pressure. In both Max’s and Malcolm’scases almost every disc in their backs had, over time, beenaffected. The end result was that both dogs have no feeling in their toes or reflexes in their hind legs.

FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

I love spring! As I am writing this (on the last day ofFebruary) we are experiencing the tenth consecutiveday of spring-like weather, after a winter with manylong cold spells. Everyone seems to feel good, aspring in their step and tails a-wagging. Winter isstill going to bring us back to reality one of thesedays. In the meantime, everyone seems to be morerelaxed and happy. Mom and Dad are smiling more, the dogs are wagging their tails and the cats aren’twagging theirs. I don’t have the capacity to worryabout what might happen in the future.

When the real spring comes back to Colorado, it willnot only warm the spirit, but it will warm my body.I’ll be more active and move around more easily. As Iget older, the old hit-by-car injuries begin to hurtagain in cold weather.

But the real thing is the spirit of it all. With theirstomachs full, the critters and the birds fix up theirnests and get ready to have babies. Lots of new birdsjoin the ones that spent the winter eating the birdseed that Mom put out. Even the bugs start to buzz, click, hum and sing. And the whole world seemsclean, bright, and full of contrasting colors. For me,the sniffing of all the new fresh smells makes mewant to dig it all up to find more new smells. Momand Dad don’t seem to enjoy my digging, for some reason, but it helps me get right down to earth, so to speak.

It’s a very special day when I find some mustysmelling animal like a turtle or a snake. If they aresleeping in the sun I like to nudge them with my noseand see what happens. It can get exciting. And younever know what you will find today, especially on awalk. It’s a big wonderful world!

I just love spring, don’t you?

CONFUSED!!

No snow, no rain, and the cover is still on the RV; I am ready to get out and travel and camp. Mom and Dadare talking about a long trip right after something called a Retiree Rally. I also found out that Mom’s sister isgoing with us (wasn’t sure what a sister is but she explained it. I don’t know if I have any.) Mom is all excitedbut I was worried. If her sister is camping with them, are they going to leave me home? After all she will haveher own bed and I won’t even try to sleep with her. Also, I don’t take up much room; I only weigh about 12pounds. I spent a lot of time staring at Mom, waiting for her to tell me where I would fit in. Finally she realized what I was trying to say and she reassured me that I would NOT be left home. Yeah! She needs to get the cover off and start packing. As I said, “I am ready to go!”

Let’s see… What else is going on here? Well, last night I got lost. Kinda sorta. Mom and Dad were working ontheir computers and Gizmo’s parents were doing what seemed like more interesting stuff upstairs so up I wentto investigate. I accidentally got shut in the craft room when his parents went to bed. They did not realizethat I was still in there. When my Mom and Dad got ready for bed they called but I did not hear them. Momwent outside calling for me just in case I was able to sneak out when the dogs were put out for the last time, but I was not there. They went to bed feeling very sad because they were afraid I was outside and could geteaten by a fox or coyote especially since I have no front claws to defend myself. I woke up Gizmo’s Mom andDad in the morning by hitting the door. I must have done a good job as they thought my Mom and Dad werebanging on something down stairs. They finally let me out and when I got down stairs Mom and Dad werereally happy to see me. I even got picked up and given a big, long hug. It sure felt good to be loved and knowyou are missed.

Guess that’s all for now. See you next month.

MEET THIS MAXFUND DOGBy Ilene Johnson

BENTLEY

Bentley is a 3 year old Shih Tzu mix who came toMaxFund as a stray. I have to admit that I fell in lovewith Bentley as soon as I met him. He covered me withkisses as I put his harness on to take him for a walk. What a loving introduction that was!

This handsome little boy is active and playful. He getsalong well with other small dogs, so if you have a smalldog, Bentley would love to meet him or her. Bentleyalso gets along with older kids (13+) and all adults. Asyou can see from Bentley’s photo, he has very lovely furthat will need regular brushing and grooming to keephim looking extra handsome.

Bentley loves going for walks, and is excellent on aleash. He is a very polite walker, making sure that hekeeps up at your pace, and he is very alert and interestedin his surroundings.

Oh, have I mentioned how affectionate he is? There isan absolutely adorable video of Bentley playing withtoys and a friend on MaxFund’s web site under hisbio, where you can see just how handsome he is.Bentley will make a wonderful addition to yourhome, and you can help make his dream of a foreverhome come true. Please come and meet this hand-some and loving little boy.

Dear MaxFund,

We renamed Babs to Stella Joya. Herfirst two weeks home went really well. She is a true joy, and she is doing reallywell! She had her first grooming today, and she is beautiful! She is really smartand learning new things every day. Iam thrilled to have her, and I appreciateeverything Max Fund does to makethis experience so great.

Thank you so much!Roberta

Dear MaxFund,

I wanted to share some photos ofour new girl and her enjoying herforever home!!!

Thank you!!Sheila Fisher

Dear MaxFund,

I just wanted to extend a note ofthanks for the wonderful bundle oflove I adopted Sunday. I had initiallyintended to foster Meatball but when Igot there Meatball had been adopted(yay for Meatball!!!).

Your staff was helpful in determiningwhat other dogs I could consider. Mybig concern was my two cats who havenever been around a dog, including onewho is rather skittish. I was debatingwhat to do.

And then I met Daisy. And fell inlove with her. And she has proven tobe the absolute perfect choice. She issuper calm (except when I have beengone and come back home - then sheis all excited), is fine not being kenneledwhen I am out and most importantly, could not care less about the cats. Asa result, they have adjusted muchmore quickly than I had anticipated.Onion Ring (skittish cat) still spendstime hiding but she has been comingout for food and pets. (and when wemoved into this place she hid for aweek - it has only been 3 days and sheis progressing quickly). Tabasco (fearless cat) is on the road to beingbest buds with Daisy.

The walker who came to let her out atlunch yesterday commented on howsweet she is.

So thank you to you and your staff. Iam looking forward to many years ofhappiness with our expanded four-legged family!

Hello,

I adopted Hunter (known as “Jed”at MaxFund) over 9 years ago. He’sbeen my best friend for the last 9years, and we’re still going strong.Thought I’d share these pictures with you as he and I just returnedfrom a dog vacation, where he got to spend a full week on the dog beach and see the ocean for thefirst time.

Matt Ingram

Dear MaxFund,

Meatball is settling into our home. He really enjoys the big new backyard and daily brushings. Walks arealways a high point. He piled rightinto his doggie bed and it has becomehis official spot in the house. We havetwo large flights of stairs (inside andoff the rear deck) and he is petrified ofboth. Fortunately, he loves food so hisstair training is going slowly but steadily. He is pretty calm in temperament andis a love. Thank you for choosing us.

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO:DIANE JEAN BECKETTBy Les Beckett

A donation has been given to MaxFund in lovingmemory of Diane Jean Beckett, who was an early supporter of MaxFund. Born in Denver inDecember of 1949 as Diane Jean Rasmussen, shegraduated from high school in Denver in 1968 andfrom Metropolitan State College in Denver in 1972.In August of 1998, she entered into the only marriageof her lifetime; and in December of 1998, she retiredon a permanent disability retirement from the Stateof Colorado after 26 years of service, most recentlyas an Administrative Assistant.

She and her husband and their pets moved to Raleigh,North Carolina in 2006, and then to a home in theNorth Carolina countryside in 2007. Diane died inNovember of 2015 from a sudden heart attack, attributedto diabetic vascular disease.

Diane was a nature-lover and a devoted pet owner. Inthe 1980’s she had a midsize poodle named Lint, andin the 1990’s until late 2003, another midsize poodlenamed Amber. In 2004, she bought a female papillon, named Midi. Meanwhile, in 1991, a young black long-haired male cat, whom she named Max, showedup on her doorstep and became a member of the family.

Early in 1992, a neighbor gave Diane a female light-tan-colored long-haired kitten whom Diane namedTabitha. Later in 1992, Diane adopted a cat fromMaxFund: a male short-haired black-and-grey tabby, whom she whimsically named Tanner, because hiscolor “was tanner on the bottom than on the top.” Inearly 1993, she took in a litter-mate of Tabitha, anorange female short-hair tabby whom she named Tiger. These cats were all indoor cats, except for occasionalwalks outside on leashes, using cat harnesses.

Diane’s pets all got along together wonderfully andwere a joy to their people. All were spayed or neuteredand made regular visits to the vet. Eventually the catswere euthanized due to various illnesses: Max andTanner in 2007, Tabitha in 2008, and Tiger in 2009.Only days after Tiger died, a friend gave Diane a youngfemale long-haired black cat named Babes.

In 2014, the little dog, Midi, died peacefully, leavingBabes as Diane’s sole surviving pet.

After moving to the countryside, Diane and her husbandput up a bird feeder, and Diane would go online toidentify any unfamiliar bird species. Her main recreationin her later years was watching TV, especially educationalshows about nature, animals, or veterinarians, andshows about people with medical problems or disabilities, and also British sitcoms, “Star Trek,” the “Big BangTheory,” the daily news, Jay Leno, and the LawrenceWelk show.

She was a loving person, and she will always beremembered, loved, and missed.

UPDATE ON GAIADear MaxFund,

I renamed Gaia “Ella” and we are very happy withher. She has come a long way in the last month. Wehave figured out where and when to potty anddiscovered that three walks per day, 2 long ones andone short one, are working well. She is very intelligentand must have had some formal training, as I havediscovered she knows: fetch, walk-on, leave it,stay, wait, and sit.

She has a terrible fascination with watching TV anddestroyed a flat screen TV by jumping on it withinthe first few weeks we had her. We now don’t allowher in the room with the TV unless we are there tomonitor and we found ways to distract her when theanimal commercials are too tempting. She is able tosee animals and also will play with a laser light, soher vision is extra special.

She is very affectionate and has come to love us,we think. She is patient with my husband who is disabled and loves giving me puppy kisses in bedin the morning.

I had been thinking of contacting you to see if youcould contact the original owners who surrenderedher first and ask them to contact me as I am verycurious if they trained her and what method, so I can capitalize on what she already learned. Is thata possibility?

I am starting to work with her on bigger NOcommands, like barking at large dogs, at strangers, and chasing the rabbits around our home. She hasgraduated from me being with her 24/7 to me able toleave her for several hours at a time with husbandhome, and on Super Bowl she was alone for 6hours with just a neighbor coming in to play andfeed her. She did great and there was nothing damaged or awry, except some lint scattered aroundfrom a trash can that was near her bed.

She likes to chew and we gave her an elk antler thatis really hard and that is satisfying her so she doesn’tchew her toys up.

In the photo of her watching the TV, that was aftershe ruined it and she still concentrated on someweird test pattern from the broken screen.

I am basically in love with this dog and makingher a wonderful home, and she seems to have settled in wonderfully and is my good dog.

I had her DNA analyzed and she came back as apure-bred Border Collie, so that was an interestingsurprise.

Thank you for making it possible for me to have thisspecial dog who has changed my life – getting meoutside more, exercising, and playing on thefloor. We have bonded and are a pair!
