Sweeping vistas reveal the unparalleled beauty of the Allegheny

Mountains. A closer focus uncovers a 1,300-acre campus filled

with history and tradition, including Historic Bethany, with five

sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Old Main

and the Campbell Mansion, home of Bethany College’s founder,

are also National Historic Landmarks.

As you leave the town of Bethany’s main street and head toward

picturesque Old Main, you’ll come upon the locked Oglebay Gates

where incoming freshmen pass through the side gates and past

the locked main gate. The main gate is opened only one time

each year, for graduating seniors to pass through, signifying the

completion of an amazing journey as Bethanians.

Students study in the shadow of Old Main, in the Gresham

Garden, and on broad lawns interspersed with brick walkways

and colorful flower beds. Since Bethany’s founding, every

student has walked the Old Main Corridor, with its brick

archways echoing a rich past and foreshadowing a future filled

with promise.

It’s a vision.

It’s a feeling. As a freshman, each student proceeds through the side gate as part of a formal welcoming ceremony,

culminating in the signing of the book of matriculation. This signifies the beginning of their journey

in becoming a Bethanian. Students then have the honor to walk through the main gate, unlocked only

once each year, to signify their new status as a Bethany graduate. The main gate remains closed and

locked at all times and is only opened at this one significant event each year.

In the long history of Bethany College, there has been one

constant – a tradition of academic excellence across all

programs. The classic liberal arts education always has been

about learning how to think. Bethany inspires students to become

better communicators, more confident leaders and excellent

problem solvers, able to rise to new challenges and succeed.

Rooted in the liberal arts, the Bethany education is the perfect

proving ground for students preparing to launch their careers in

every profession. Employers continue to seek well-rounded

college graduates with a wealth of experience in critical thinking,

decision making and communication skills in the humanities,

arts and sciences.

Bethany offers students more than 30 fields of study, and they

are encouraged to keep an open mind about their majors as they

travel through their educational careers.

A study in contrasts.

With all its tradition, Bethany also is a campus of contrasts. State-of-the-art labs are juxtaposed

with the tradition of Old Main. Students learn new theory and concepts in high-ceilinged

classrooms with their original hardwood floors. Students in fine arts classes are struck by Pop Art

artifacts such as a painted leather couch, tricycle and Elvis lamp intermingled with classical

Romanesque sculptures on the balcony amid skylights and steel beams in the Grace Phillips

Johnson Fine Arts Building.

Accessibility doesn’t end

with members of the

faculty, but extends through

department heads and

administration right up to

the College President. With

an office at the center of

Old Main, the President is in

the middle of the action.

The 13:1 student/faculty ratio means you will know your professors

and they’ll know you. As mentors, confidants and friends, professors

form bonds with students, even inviting them into their homes for

coffee, dinner and engaging conversation. Our professors are here

because they like to teach, and students reap the benefits with better

communication, more learning opportunities and deeper understanding.

Bethany’s academic rigor has been creating leaders for nearly

170 years. From First Year Seminar to Senior Capstone

Project and Comprehensive Examination, a demanding,

confidence-building exercise that helps you to understand

how far you have come in four years, and shows potential

employers that your experience is a cut above other recent

graduates. Few schools nationwide require the combination

of senior capstone and comprehensives in the form of an

eight-hour written exam and an orals board with three

members of the faculty for all students. This unique and

intensive process enables Bethany students to demonstrate

mastery in their chosen fields.

It’s the leadership.

Real-world experiences

While travel abroad is often a once-in-a-college-career dream for many at colleges and universities,

some students at Bethany are constantly traveling overseas – and getting credit, too. Thanks to

well-established affiliations with universities around the globe, students can spend a semester

studying in France, Spain, Germany, Japan, England, Canada, Argentina or Greece. Some students

have visited as many as ten countries during their four years at Bethany.

Internships are also an important component of a Bethany education as students gain professional

and developmental experiences through working in their related fields of study or through the

many leadership opportunities available.

Students from big cities and small towns will experience

something quite different at Bethany. Our students hail from

29 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and eight countries.

Putting a vibrant group of students possessing various talents

together with a nurturing group of faculty in an idyllic,

sheltered setting combines a small town lifestyle with dynamic

academic and social opportunities afforded only to students

at Bethany and a select few of their private college brethren.

Students quickly become acclimated to a new vibrant community

made up of their peers. The quaint town of Bethany comes to life

each academic year with an influx of hundreds of students ready

to explore new worlds and create a new society.

Beyond the classroom, 90 percent of students become involved

in activities, clubs and organizations based in service. Bethany’s

diverse selection of clubs and service groups are one way that

students make Bethany their community.

Greeks abound at Bethany and have since the College’s founding. You’ll see Greek letters in

classrooms, in the academic parlor atop Old Main, and hanging out on “Bethany Beach,”

a green space between Phillips and Harlan Halls. Bethany offers six fraternities and three

sororities, all nationally affiliated. Our Greek system encourages scholarship, fosters leadership

and allows for philanthropic experiences.

But you don’t have to go Greek to serve the greater community.

Bethany has a long tradition of providing service opportunities. In

fact, most campus clubs and organizations participate in volunteer

activities coordinated by the Student Activities Council and Student

Government Association. Providing assistance to others is part of

Bethany’s heritage, representing a way to bond with other students

and share meaningful experiences.

Finding friends who share your beliefs and interests is easier on

a smaller, tightknit campus. Students of faith find Bethany

welcoming and filled with opportunities. As an important leader

in the Restoration Movement, our founder, Alexander Campbell,

would not have had it any other way. Friends of faith can enjoy

informal get-togethers and studying for spiritual growth.

Whatever your beliefs, both spirited and spiritual discussions

abound at Bethany.

It’s the courage.

Learning at an intimate campus with high-achieving students takes place everywhere in an energized

environment, as scholars discuss everything from world affairs to the state of the economy, to that

morning’s English Literature lecture – and they do so in every possible venue.

But discussions are only part of the picture. Opportunities abound for students to choose to stay in

or get out of their comfort zones. Theatre arts majors can audition for a play. But so can a pre-med

major. A communication major may work for the radio or television station. But so can a biochemistry

major. A physical education major may be part of the soccer team. But so are computer science and

pre-law majors.

Learning outside the classroom

Real-world learning takes many forms at Bethany, including

our own student-staffed and student-managed television

and radio stations. Our weekly newspaper, The Tower, offers

an opportunity for students to practice reporting and

editorial skills. The Harbinger, a literary magazine, gives

creative writers a chance for expression. The Bethany

yearbook and Folio magazine present additional avenues

for growth.

Theatre and music groups are always preparing for another

show and seeking new talent. The David and Irene Steinman

Fine Arts Center provides excellent facilities, including

rehearsal rooms and a fully-equipped theatre.

Future leaders from all majors participate in Student

Government Association, a liaison between the student body

and college administration. In fact, alumni have progressed

from SGA to employment in the White House and other

government positions.

Another leadership opportunity exists in the self-governed

residence halls at Bethany, including the Greek houses.

Resident Assistants, or R.A.s, are student leaders selected on

the basis of their campus leadership skills and experiences,

character and the ability to relate well with others.

At the heart of Bethany’s athletic complex is the Thomas Phillips Johnson Health and

Recreation Center. A fresh, new artificial turf playing surface and modern lighting

system highlight the multipurpose field, which is surrounded by a state-of-the-art,

all-weather, 400-meter running track.

The accomplishments of Bethany’s student-athletes aren’t limited to the playing

fields, courts, tracks and pools. They put the “student” in student-athlete. Many

Bison teams have been recognized for their academic prowess with several

individuals honored as Academic All-Americans.

There are many opportunities for learning and living at Bethany.

And like any small college campus, Bethany students love their

sports. With options that include varsity athletics, club sports

and intramurals, there is a playing field for every member of the

Bethany community.

Twenty varsity sports teams compete in NCAA Division III as a

member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Men’s and

women’s teams compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer,

swimming and diving, tennis and track and field. Men’s sports

also include football and baseball, while softball and volleyball

are part of the women’s varsity sports program. Intramural sports

include basketball, ultimate frisbee and soccer, while a club

program is offered in equestrian competition. A new, lighted,

artificial turf stadium field is ringed by a year-round synthetic

track, offering the best in facilities for the college athlete.

For the independent soul, there are the Bethany Trails, located in the Parkinson Forest on campus, along with tennis courts and an

outdoor track. The Thomas Phillips Johnson Recreation Center, located adjacent to the Hummel Field House, provides excellent facilities

for recreational activities, including a large gymnasium, fitness area, a swimming pool, courts for racquet sports, a weight room and

an exercise area. The Cummins Community Center, an exercise facility open 24/7, is located adjacent to Campbell Village.

A place to call home.

With the influx of more than 900 individuals every fall, Bethany students turn the historic town of

Bethany into a vibrant, energized venue. Once-quiet town avenues bustle with students heading to class,

to the athletic complex or to grab a cup of coffee at a favorite campus hangout. Catch up with friends

or watch a game at the newly-remodeled Student Center, featuring pool tables, five 52-inch flat screen

televisions and a lounge.

With 15 residence halls on campus ranging from

traditional dormitory rooms to upscale apartment-style

living, students are not lacking variety in where they live.

But your residence hall is also a safe environment where

you’ll study, relax, play and grow, sharing a camaraderie

with fellow students that leads to lifetime bonds. The

newest residence hall is also the most popular, with

Campbell Village offering upscale apartment-style living,

complete with living rooms and kitchenettes. Students

live four to a suite and enjoy fully-furnished private

bedrooms with central heating and air conditioning.

Campbell Village also has a community center filled with

lounges, study rooms, pool tables, table tennis, air hockey,

foosball and arcade games. Students living in Campbell

Village also will find a workout alternative, with a full

complement of cardiovascular equipment located within

the complex.

It’s a vision that this is a place where learning happens.

It’s a feeling that these strangers who you see walking

through the Oglebay Gates at freshman convocation will

become your dearest, truest, lifelong friends.

It’s the knowledge that the professors who will touch your

life for the next four years truly care and not only want to

see you succeed, but expect it.

It’s the leadership that you come away with after presiding

over your fraternity’s meetings, editing the newspaper or

volunteering to build a home for a family in need.

It’s the courage to step outside of your comfort zone

and audition for a play, host your own radio show or write

poetry for the literary magazine.

All this and so much more is what it means to be a

Bethanian, ready for the world, prepared to hit the ground

running in a new career or achieve success in whatever

professional program you pursue through further education.

As a Bethany graduate, your every dream can be realized

while fulfilling the needs of current and future employers.
