Introduction

In this presentation we are going to present and explained the good life of a famous baseball player named Roberto Clemente, he represented Puerto Rico in many ways because he tried to do the best he could to be a major league player and helped other people in their life's.

Biography

Roberto Clemente Walker, born in August 18, 1934, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The youngest of seven children and he died in December 31, 1972.

On November 14, 1964, he married Vera Zabala at San Fernando Church in Carolina. They had three children: Roberto Jr., Luis Roberto and Enrique Roberto.

He began his professional career playing with the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League (LBBPR).

While he was playing in Puerto Rico, the Brooklyn Dodgers offered him a contract to play with the Montreal Royals. Clemente accepted the offer and was active with the team until he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League Baseball draft that took place on November 22, 1954.

Clemente played eighteen seasons in Major League Baseball from 1955 to 1972, all with Pittsburgh.

He was awarded the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1966.

During the course of his career, Clemente was selected to participate in the league's All Star Game on twelve occasions.

He won twelve Gold Glove Awards and led the league in batting average four different seasons.

He was involved in charity work both in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries, often delivering baseball equipment and food to them.

New Year's Eve, December 31, 1997 marked the 25th Anniversary of a tragic plane crash. The plane was taking medical, food and clothing supplies to earthquake stricken Nicaragua.

Vera and friends begged him not to take the trip (poor weather and an unstable cargo plane) but Roberto was determined. He was infuriated that the previous supplies had not made it to the victims.

Roberto was going to personally see to it that the victims received the much needed supplies. Unfortunately, the plane went down off the coast of Puerto Rico.

Roberto's body was never found. Just months after Roberto joined an elite group of players with 3,000 hits, he was gone. Hall of Fame baseball player Roberto Clemente was the first great Hispanic star in major league baseball.

Playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he had a lifetime average of .317 and 240 home runs had four seasons. Clemente is also the first Latino to win a World Series as a starting player in 1960, win a league MVP award in 1966 and win a World Series MVP award in 1971.
