Thisprojectisagussetedpursepatternwithalotofextradetails,includingkittyears,appliquedwhiskers,severalinnerpockets,snapclosure,andadjustablestrap(viabuckle).It’ssubtleandalittlebitsweetwithoutbeingoverthetop.

Firstisinstallingthehiddenzipperinthebackliningofthe

bag.Tostart,layeroneofthehiddenpocketpiecesoveroneoftheliningpieceswithrightsidesfacing.Lineupthepatternguide-linesthatshowwherethezipperopeningmustbesewn,thensewaroundthatrectangle.

Turnthisarearightsideoutbycuttingaslitdownthemiddleoftherectangle,

thencutdiagonallyintothecornersascloseasyou

canwithoutactuallycuttingthethreads.

Pushthehiddenpocketfabricthroughtheholesothefabricsflipovertotheotherside.Youshouldnowhaveaneatlittlerectangularholefromtheseamsewninstep1.Pressitniceandcrisptoprepareforthenextstep.

Toinstallthezipper,layitfacingdownontothehiddenpocketfabricsotherightsidepeeksthroughtherectangularwindow.Pinthezipperinplacealongtheedges,orifthat’sapainithelpstotapeitinplaceoruseagluestick.Besurethezippersliderisinthemiddleofthewindow,thensewascloseasyoucanaroundtheedgeofthewindow,beingcarefulwhengoingoverthezipperteeth.

Tofinishthepocket,takeyourremaininghiddenpocketpieceandplaceit

ontopoftheoneattachedtothelining(rightsidesfacing).

Lineuptheedgesandsewaroundtheperimeterusinga1/4”seamallowance.You’llneedtopushtheliningfabricoutofthewayabittodothis.Thatcompletesthehiddenpocket!

Theliningalsohasafewsewn-inpocketsaswell,sowe’regoingtotackle

thosenext.Beginbytakingtwooftheliningpocketpieces

andliningthemupalongthetopstraightedge.Sewthemtogetheralongthisedge,thenpresstheseamandturnitrightsideout.

Iwantedtotryatech-niqueI’veseenusedbysomeotherbloggerstoaddabitmorestabilitytomypocket,sothisiswhereIcutabitofquiltingcottonthesamesizeasoneofthepocketswithoutseamallowances.Tuckitinbetweenthepocketpiecesandanchoritinplacebytopstitchingthepreviousseamfromstep6.Youcouldskipthebattingifyoufeelitisn’tneces-sary.

Whencomplete,bastethepockettoyourfreshlysewnliningpiece(theonewiththeinstalledzipper).Lineitupagainstthebottomandsewitalongthesides.Here’swhereyoumightalsowanttosewsomedivisionsdependingonwhatsortofthingsyoucarry;pencilpockets,phonepocket,keys,etc.

Oncetheinnerfacingisallreadytogo,youcansewittoyourliningpieces.Lineupthestraightedgesasshownandsewalongthatedge.Leaveagapinoneofthemasthepatternguidelinesindicatesoyoucanturnthebagrightsideoutlater.Whencomplete,presstheseamopen.

Allthat’slefttodofortheliningisconnectthefrontandbacksectionsviathegusset.Thegussetwillneedtostretcharoundthecurvedbottomofthelining,soithelpstomakesmall1/4”orsoclipsintotheseamallowanceevery2-3”orso.Whenpinningthegusset,you’llfindthatthecirclemarkingsinthecornersshouldlineupwiththeseamyoujustmadeinstep11.Onceeverythingisalllinedupandnice,sewitinplace.Repeatthiswiththeothersideofthegussetandtheremainingliningpieceandyourliningisallfinished!
