Definition – What is UWB?

Ultra Wide Band is communication technology used

in wireless networking to achieve high Bandwidth

connection with low power spectral density.

UWB is a form of extremely wide spread spectrum

where RF energy is spread over gigahertz of

spectrum

• Wider than any narrowband system by orders of

magnitude

• Power seen by a narrowband system is a fraction

of the total UWB power

FCC DefinitionFractional Bandwidth > 20% of fc

𝐵𝑓 = 2𝑓𝐻 − 𝑓𝐿𝑓𝐻 + 𝑓𝐿

> 0.2

fH : higher 10dB down point

fL : lower 10db down point

fc : central frequency

Bandwidth > 500 MHz

Example:

fL=1GHz and fH=3GHz → FB = 1

GHz

Principles of UWB

Time Domain

Extremely short pulses

Very low duty cycle

Frequency Domain

Ultra wide spectrum

Low power spectral

density

Page 6: A seminar on ultra wide band

How UWB works

• Generation of extremely short digital pulses in the

subnanosecond range.

• Uses and extremely wide band of RF spectrum to

transmit data

Page 7: A seminar on ultra wide band

Effectiveness of Ultra Wide

Band• Shannon showed that the system capacity, C, of a channel perturbed by AWGN ---

Where:C = Max Channel Capacity (bits/sec)B = Channel Bandwidth (Hz)S = Signal Power (watts)N = Noise Power (watts)

Capacity per channel (bps) BCapacity per channel (bps) log(1+S/N)

1. Increase B2. Increase S/N, use higher order modulation

Why UWB - Advantages

Spectrum reuse

Use frequencies from 3.1

to 10.6 GHz

coexist with other users

(sharing spectrum)

High data rate in short range,

high throughput

500 Mbps at 10 feet

Low power

Baseband modulation (no

carrier)

Long battery life of portable

devices

Page 10: A seminar on ultra wide band

Comparison with other technologies

• Faster than Bluetooth, Wi Fi

• Data rate of 450Mbps instead of 1Mbps

• Complementary to existing radio technologies like 802.11

Page 11: A seminar on ultra wide band

UWB Applications

• Replacing IEEE 1394 cables with wireless

connectivity

• No. 1 High quality wireless video

• Accurate Ranging information

• Radar and Imaging

Page 12: A seminar on ultra wide band

Future ScopeWIRELESS USB

• The next step for USB technology is wireless USB.• WUSB will be high speed wireless interconnect technology to take advantage

of USB

• With WUSB, a user can bring a hard disk in proximity to a PC, laptop and, once authentication and authorization are complete, files can be transferred onto the PC.

Page 13: A seminar on ultra wide band

• Well suited for high speed, short range WPAN.

• Supports multimedia data rates, and offers inherent data security.

• There's a possibility that UWB will become the "next best" technology for all types of wireless networks, including wireless LANs.
