Household Selection Procedure Start your walk pattern from the starting point indicated on the EA map. For each interview start walking in a different
direction from the starting point. In other words: for the 1st interview walk in a northerly direction from the starting point, for
the 2nd
interview walk in the direct opposite direction (i.e. South), for the 3rd
interview go at right angles to the direction of the
1st interview (i.e. go East or West), and for the 4
th interview go in the direct opposite direction to the 3
rd interview (i.e. East if
you went West in the 3rd
interview, or West if you went East in the 3rd
interview). Use an interval of 10 houses between your
starting point and the first house that you visit. If a call is unsuccessful, use the table below to record your progress until you
make a successful call. Circle a code number for unsuccessful calls only. Continue walking and going to every 10th
house
until you have a successful interview.
A. RESPONDENT SELECTION AND SCREENING
INTRODUCTION: Good day. My name is ____________. I am from Citizens Surveys, an independent research organization. I
do not represent the government or any political party. We are doing this research for the Comparative National Election Project,
a network of researchers who study elections in over twenty countries across the world. The South African survey is being
conducted by researchers at the University of Cape Town.
We are studying the views of South Africans in order to learn more about the connection between citizens, political parties and
election campaigns around the world. We would like to discuss these issues with a member of your household in an interview.
Every person in the country has an equal chance of being included in this study. All information will be kept confidential. Your
household has been chosen by chance. We would like to choose an adult from your household.
The interview will take about 60 minutes. There is no penalty for refusing to take part. And if they do choose to take part, they
may stop at any time, or skip any question they do not wish to answer without penalty. Would you help us pick one?
Record the total number of people who live in this household for more than 15 days per month
Now, can you please tell me how many people aged 18 years and older live in this household? Please remember,
to include all household members aged 15 years and older who live in the household for more than 15 days per month, even if they
are not here today.
Record total number of people aged 18 years and older
PLEASE CAN YOU GIVE ME THEIR NAMES AND AGES FROM THE YOUNGEST TO OLDEST? RECORD IN SPACES BELOW.

Kish Grid: - For Interviewer Use
Look up the final digit of the questionnaire number in the row and the number of eligible people in the household in the column. The number in the cell where the column and row meet is the person to interview. For example, if there are 3 people in the household aged 15 years and older and the last digit on the questionnaire is 8, interview the last person on the list (i.e. the 3rd youngest).

By talking to people about the 2014 elections, we find that a lot of people did not register as voters because they did not have the
time, did not know where to register, or did not have the correct documents. By looking at public records kept by election officials,
we can get an accurate report of how many people are actually registered. Of course, these public records do not say which party
you support. Part of our study will involve checking these records against the survey reports.
