To all in the Uplands Community,
Happy New Year!
I hope you had a very enjoyable holiday
period and start to the New Year. It is
wonderful to have all the students and
staff back at school this week and hear
about the many different ways people
spent the three week break.
Although we have just begun 2016 we have already
started planning for the next academic year. Please
see the academic calendar dates for 2016 ‐2017 later
in this newsletter. These dates have already been
added to the school’s online calendar and the
Uplands Mobile App. The school holiday days are
now fixed. Should there be any amendments to the
gazetted Public Holiday dates we will update the
online calendar and inform you of any changes
through the weekly newsletter.
It may only be the end of Week 1 but this newsletter
is bursting with information ! We hope youi enjoy
it. Have a great weekend!

Welcome to the start of Term 2. I hope everyone had a restful break and had the chance to spend
some valuable family time together over the festive season. I would like to take this opportunity
to welcome all of the new students and their families to the Uplands community. In Secondary
we had twelve new students begin this week:
Year 7 ‐ Teh De Yong and Jermaine Eow
Year 8 – Safiya Yusuf and Wong Yu Sen
Year 9 – Cao Yi Wen
Year 10 – Portia Macintosh, Andy Ooi and Rhyley Tiatoa
Year 12 – Lee Jia Wen, Loh Wei Min, Jesslyn Ong and Aaron Raj
I do hope all of the students have had a comfortable start to their time at uplands. As part of the
new students in Year 12, I would like to congratulate the three scholarship students; Loh Wei
Min, Jesslyn Ong and Aaron Raj. These three students, as well as five other shortlisted
candidates, went through an extensive application process throughout November and
December, sitting four exams and an interview. They showed excellent academic and
communication skills throughout the process and demonstrated characteristics of the IB Learner
Profile as well as experience in being a global citizen. I wish all of our new students the very best
of luck during their time at Uplands.
I would also like to officially welcome a new member of staff to
Uplands; Ms Penny Ackroyd has joined the Science Faculty and will be
teaching Biology, General Science and ICT. Penny joins us from Hobart
in Australia, where she has had an extensive career in education,
holding a variety of leadership positions in both secondary and tertiary
institutions. Penny is also an avid netballer and will also be coaching
some girls netball teams with Ms Marshall.
Next week I will be departing for London to assist Mr Bristow in the recruitment of teachers for
the next academic year. I will be absent from Tuesday afternoon and will return to school the
following Wednesday. In my absence, our Head of Pastoral, Mr Bill Mitchell, will be deputising
for me.
Have a great weekend

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Dear Parents and Students,
As you may be aware, we have begun the process of gaining accreditation by the Council of
International Schools (CIS). One of the key aspects of schools that CIS take very seriously and
want to see embedded in every aspect of school life are our Guiding Statements (vision, mission,
values, motto etc). We have a set of these, but they have not been reviewed for some years and
need revitalising for the school we have today and want to be in the future.
With this in mind, Wing Commander Paul Webb, the Commanding Officer at the Australian Air
Force base in Butterworth, who is both a governor and an experienced colleague who has worked
on guiding statements before, has offered his support to the school and will run some sessions
with volunteers to begin the process of revising our statements as a school community.
On Saturday 30th January Paul Webb will be leading 2 sessions with a range of people from our
school community – governors, staff, parents and students collectively.
This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of our school’s future development and have a say in
how we shape our mission and values. We would appreciate your support as parents and
students in this process. You would be asked to share your ideas and thoughts on our schools
mission and values; essentially what we consider the best way to work as a school community.
If you would like to volunteer for one of the 2 working sessions on that day please let me know
by choosing below and emailing me as soon as possible. Your help would be greatly appreciated,
and you will be joined by both academic and administrative staff volunteers in this process. It
should an invigorating and exciting chance to have your say in what we say about our school
and the way we do things at Uplands.
Saturday 30th January ‐ Park Royal Hotel
Session 1 ‐ 8.30am ‐ 12.00pm
Session 2 ‐ 1.00pm ‐ 4.30pm
I look forward to hearing from you all. If you have further questions I can always be found in
the Head of Year office (B104) or email me your questions. Your support and attendance would
be greatly appreciated.
Email: [email protected]
Warmest Regards

Year 11 and Year 13 Mock Exams
Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have commenced this term with some apprehension but also
with great enthusiasm for their Mock Exams. Some of our Year 10 and Year 9 students are also
embracing the challenge of writing an early examination. After monitoring the approach of our
students this first week, it is very apparent that they have applied themselves fully to their studies
over the term break in readiness for the Mocks. Year 11 and Year 13 Summary Reports,
distributed on February 5th, will indicate a Mock Exam grade for each subject, along with general
attainment and effort grades. Mock Exam grades are also used to inform and update any
predicted grades required in association with university applications.
On behalf of all Academic Staff, I would like to encourage our students to continue to exercise
great resilience and diligence during this rigorous examination period. Wishing them the best of
luck for the final series of examinations.

Welcome back to Upland’s boarding for 2016.
We have had an uneventful start to Term 2. Many boarders returned on Sunday 10th January in
preparation for the Year 11 and 13 Mock examinations. We celebrated their arrival with a Pizza
night and introduction to the Peake family who have joined the boarding community this term.
The entire boarding community are looking forward to moving into the new residences in
February 2016. It is a significant time of change within boarding and we appreciate the support
provided by the Uplands community in making this happen. An important aspect of Boarding
life is to assist our boarders to organise a work‐life balance. Hence an exciting weekend of
activities has been organised including a Friday movie night, weekly trip to Gurney Plaza and
Sunday adventure to Flee 60 in Batu Ferringhi to ‘escape the room’ by searching clues and solving
puzzles within a limited time frame.

SECONDARY SPORTS DAY
On Wednesday 16th December, Secondary school had our annual sports day which was held at
USM. On what was a wonderfully cool day and perfect for an athletics meet we started off with
the 100m heats. The 2 fastest from each house would then meet again in the finals. Every student
was involved and it was obvious from the start that it was going to be a very competitive day of
track and field.
This year saw the introduction of our newest house “Kelawai” ‐ small in numbers but strong in
spirit was their motto and this proved to be exactly the case as the day progressed.
The day continued with boys competing in the field events whilst the girls were competing on
the track. There were some amazingly competitive races and some outstanding jumps and throws
– it really was evident that everybody was competing to the best of their ability. There was a
great atmosphere in the stadium and everything was running extremely smoothly. The sun
broke through the clouds but students were able to keep shaded thanks to the tents that were
kindly donated by Santa Fe. These were very welcome.
At the change over all were entertained by the new House chants! Influenced just a little by the
Australian Football I think.
Swapping over, it was time for the boys to show their speed on the track whilst the girls were
competing in the field.
In total there were 18 school records made and a huge congratulations go to all the students who
hold new Uplands school athletic records.
There has to be an overall winner and this year it was: SCHOOL house.
The overall scores were as follows:
SCHOOL 2236
HILL 2137
CRAG 1848
KELAWAI 1542
A big thank you to all concerned who made this years’ sports day an excellent event.

for the Uplands community in school. We are in the midst of setting up a new security policy

I would like to say a huge thank you to all those who
were involved in the Senior School Production of
Mulan in December. We sold almost 400 tickets to
the show across our three performances! The
feedback received from the whole school community
was fantastic and as a new member of staff to the
school last term, I am overwhelmed with the support
received from the school and especially from the
parents!
I thought I’d share some photos of the production for
those of you who didn’t get to see us in action, or for
those of you who would like a reminder of the
brilliant performances by our Uplands students.
