GoTo vs star hopping. We ended up using a combination of methods:
- star hopping to the well-known objects
- “pushing to” others with our Orion SkyQuest XT10i IntelliScope.

The best time for a Marathon June is the best time for observing in the Free
State free of mosquitoes, free of light pollution –
free in the Freestate! And cloud-free, too. The cold creates good stable conditions and
the nights are long and dark: almost 11 hours of deep time if the weather co-operates and body & soul don’t give in.
And it almost never rains.

A Week(month) Before the Marathon More time was spent on chart work, generating
observing lists, and consulting the Internet and books, than was spent on doing the marathon. But that’s how it goes with any observing evening.
Good preparation makes things go smoother.
You don’t want to be left in the dark…..
Collimate your telescope Watch the weather patterns Be aware of the Jetstreams
