A Reflection in the absence of the Pastor…September 22, 2019 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C
The first reading from Amos and Luke’s gospel account of Jesus’ parable about the rich man’s steward both echo desperation and dishonesty by people who were making a living. They were trying to be sneaky, but they got caught. I can remember as I was growing up, my mom used to say, “You can lie to me and you can even lie to yourself, but you cannot lie to God. He sees everything you do and you will have to face him one day. Think about your choices.”
In the second reading Paul is imploring us to be a forgiving people. Pray for everyone no matter what their stature in life is. We tend to look at someone and say, “He/She is rich or lucky so they don’t need my prayers.” Paul calls us to task by reminding us everyone needs prayers, forgiveness and mercy.
Every time I hear a story about someone who has embezzled money from a church, community organization or an elderly/disabled person I look like a scared cat. The hair on my neck stands up and I growl and hiss, “How can someone be so callus and mean?” But what I don’t know is what is going on in their life. Desperation makes an honest person do many things that they may not do otherwise. Perhaps evil made the temptation just too great and in a heated moment a bad judgment call is made.
We are reminded by Jesus through Luke’s gospel that God entrusted us to be good stewards of his love and mercy. If we cannot forgive, how can we expect to be forgiven? In 1981 Pope John Paul II was shot four times in St. Peter’s Square at Vatican City and survived. Instead of anger, he turned his pain to prayer. He asked for everyone to pray for the man who shot him. Then he took it even further and in 1983 Pope John Paul II went to the prison and met the man face to face and extended God’s forgiveness and mercy. In later years he even met with the man’s family to extend God’s love. Examine your own stewardship of God’s love, forgiveness and mercy. Are you being a good steward?
God is good all the time; all the time God is good! Joan Scharf, M.A.P.S.
