A Reflection From the Administrator’s Desk…June 4, 2017

Pentecost Sunday

The Jewish feast of Pentecost was one of the three major pilgrim festivals of Israel. It was originally an agricultural feast that marked the end of the grain harvest. It was also called the feast of weeks because it was celebrated seven weeks or fifty days after the feast of unleavened bread. In fact,

the word Pentecost is a Greek word which means fifty. As a pilgrim feast, Pentecost eventually assumed a great importance among the Jews. It commemorated the giving of the law to Moses on Sinai. As a pilgrim feast, devout Jews from every nation visited Jerusalem for the celebration.

It was in the context of this celebration that the disciples of Jesus had the experience of the new Pentecost. “When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were” (Acts 2:1 New American Bible). The external manifestations of the new Pentecost were signs associated with the experience of God. For example, the strong driving wind, tongues of fire and speaking in different tongues. The exact nature of the manifestation is less significant than its meaning. The most significant meaning was the presence of God’s Spirit.

Those present at Pentecost were gathered in a large crowd and experienced great confusion. But their confusion is not like the experience of Babel which was reported in Genesis 11:1-9. At the Babel experience, people could not understand each other in their confusion. But at the Pentecost experience the confusion united them; they were surprised they could understand each other even though they spoke in their native tongue. Whatever language they spoke they were heard speaking of the mighty act of God.

Pentecost is not celebrated like Christmas or Easter, Pentecost marks the birthday of the church. It is a significant event in the Christian history. The outpouring of the Spirit transformed the gathering disciples from fear to courage, passion, and conviction. The gift of the Spirit enabled them and now all of us to bear the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22). Which of these fruits do you bear? God is good all the time; all the time God is good! Fr. Linus Umoren

Let us welcome the Holy spirit as we celebrate the birth of the church today. Please stand and join in singing Hymn number ___ and know that God is good all the time.

Women’s Club News…

Women’s Club Rummage Sale is September 9 and 10, 2017. We appreciate all donations, but we have found that the older tube television sets and CRT monitors cannot be accepted any longer. The organization who gets what is not sold cannot take these items and we have no place to recycle of them. Donations are accepted on Tuesday mornings and Sunday after Mass; please do not leave items outside by the doors. If it rains we do not want your donated treasures to get ruined. If you would like to

drop off your donations other than these two days please contact a Women’s Club officer so that we can make sure your donations get inside the building. Thank you for your cooperation. Liz Vernon, Chair

Quilter’s News…Quilting every Tuesday after 8 a.m. Mass in the quilter’s room of the parish center. Tickets for the July quilt raffle are available in the back of church on the table. When you pick up your tickets it keeps the cost down of mailing them. Thank you! Carol McClanahan, Quilt Chair

Maintenance and Other Issues...Who do you notify?

Due to the great number of parishioners who do wonderful

work keeping our parish home clean and in working order, a question has been raised as to who they need to turn in receipts to. We have several maintenance angels who anonymously spend countless hours working on our buildings and grounds; if you see something that needs addressed, please let Fr. Linus, Duane McClanahan, Rose Jordan, or Joan Scharf know of your concern so they can ask one of these men if they would address the need and let them know how to proceed. Many times when asked these men proceed and even pay for the repair without turning in a receipt, but we want to make sure anyone who addresses any item knows to notify the proper persons and how to be reimbursed or how to get a check when needed. The Women's Club takes care of certain items so you may be redirected to Liz Vernon the Women's Club Chair or one of the other persons on the executive board (Sherry Godfrey, Co-Chair or Joan Scharf, Treasurer) for direction of their funds. We are so blessed to have parishioners who take such good care of our faith home and we greatly appreciate each and every one of you. Fr. Linus Umoren
