DESCRIPTION

Welcome to a quantified Life. In this presentation held at the QS Vienna meetup #1, which took place 25.6.2014 at the IBM Vienna HQ, I talk a bit about what I use and how life with my diabetes tools tends to be. I also show a few basic screens from the mySugr products Companion and Analysis. I decided to also add some notes in the slides, hope you don't mind

A QUANTIFIED LIFE

Welcome to the life of a quantified self – of a person with diabetes. One of the involuntary quants.

30 YEARS WITH DIABETES

1.8 L BLOOD

547,500 U INSULIN

75,000 BG TESTS

Life with type 1 diabetes, is a bit data driven. You could say, that we are the original quants!

Healthcare as industry and concept, is awesome! But there are some issues looming: • Fewer docs • More people sick With modern tools, medicine can become better

PREVENTION EFFICIENCY PHILOSOPHY

A few fields we need to address as a society: • Prevent issues before they arise • Make it easier and faster for our docs to do their job, as well as the right job on the right person • Address something greater than just a problem, address the cause of the effect. Change the philosophy of us as a population

In diabetes, there are three things needed to make the management successful: • The basic knowledge • The basic tools • The right attitude

#qs

To affect change in yourself, us Quants also need the same things, right? • The basic knowledge • The adequate tools • And a community through which we can learn.

HEALTHCARE IS SLOWLY BECOMING THE DOMAIN OF

THE PEOPLE IT AFFECTS

The age of the internet, has now also infested healthcare. Democratisation, is what is going on – of knowledge, ability and willingness to build and share our work.

HEALTHCARE IS SLOWLY BECOMING THE DOMAIN OF

THE PEOPLE IT AFFECTS

The normal person need no longer be passive, the 1% are engaged and actually changing stuff. And these 1%, is the QS community. !So why am I here?

HEALTH

And the mySugr stuff, since well, it was built by my team to meet mine and other ‘betics needs :)

Page 14: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

Starting with the mySugr Companion – a quirky, motivating logbook which makes the data useful in day to day life First part: • A dashboard over my data: blood glucose, meals, injections and stats

Page 15: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

• A simple analysis tool in the Companion app

Page 16: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

• Motivating challenges which help me focus and take the next step

HEALTH

I also use the web analysis tool on a weekly basis.

Page 18: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

Zooming in on the graph, I can see a few patterns: late at night, I’m often high, as well as before lunch

Page 19: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

My base stats are summarised

Page 20: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

And I can review how I handle different meals: • Often low before breakfast! • And in 40% of the cases also high after breakfast…

Page 21: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

Diabetes is often said to define a person with diabetes, yet we are now more and more in control of it. What is often forgotten, is that this is what I want to be. Not a perfectly compliant unit. I just want to be happy and healthy. Except for rich, and a bloody astronaut ;)

Page 22: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

We say that we live with a monster at our side.

Page 23: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

One with many faces.

Page 24: A Quantified Life – presented at #qsVienna #meetup #1

But we can tame it, piece by piece. Flip it, and even make it a positive force in our lives. !Until we have a cure, it is for us to make our situation understandable, make us able to cope, and maybe even enjoy it. !Sometimes… We succeed in making the monster change its’ mind. Sometimes it becomes a friend.
