Students & Young Professionals Fun Trip at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific

Photos by: Rachel Deco The Students and Young Professionals Group on December 14, 2013 took a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific. 17 participants enjoyed the sites of the Aquarium, viewing exhibits of sharks, penguins, seals and sea otters. The excursion was concluded with a viewing of creatures from the reef ecosystem and the deep ocean.

Onsite Water Reuse Symposium & Technology Fair and Education Programs in Malibu!

Presented by the California Onsite Wastewater Association (COWA) and the Environmental Sustainability Department of the City of Malibu

Water Recycling and Reuse is the hot topic in these times of water shortage, drought, and rising costs. Large municipal wastewater reclamation and reuse facilities are well established in California and nationally. Technological advancements are revolutionizing the reuse and recycling of reclaimed water in the Onsite Wastewater Treatment “septic system” Industry. These advancements have allowed best management practices to be applied to small scale technologies enabling reuse of treated wastewater, graywater, rainwater and stormwater benefiting homeowners, businesses and the environment.

This “decentralized” or onsite approach reduces water consumption, supports healthy watersheds and saves energy through localized internal and external reuse in homes and commercial properties.

• On Friday January 17, 2014 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Malibu City Hall nationally recognized experts will present a series of opportune lectures on these topics. Lecture series cost is only $75.00 per person including lunch options from gourmet food trucks available at Malibu City Hall.

• On the same day, a Technology Fair and Exhibition, free and open to the public, will also be held where

these advanced technologies will be on display by vendors and sponsors of the event.

• COWA will also be providing a weeklong series of trainings for wastewater practitioners. For schedule and course outlines see the COWA website at http://www.cowa.org/.

Who should attend? Anyone interested in the reuse, recycling and conservation of our invaluable water resources in the state of California. Homeowners, contractors, wastewater professionals, architects, designers, regulators and the public will all benefit from this informative event.

Please be sure to read the recent article on the COWA Symposium featured in the December 2013 issue of American Liquid Waste Magazine: http://www.americanliquidwaste.com/category/associations/ To learn more, and/or register for any or all of the COWA Malibu Series events, click here for Online Information and Online Registration.

This Year’s Women’s Leadership Council Legacy Conference in Pasadena, CA Sold Out! Article and Photos by: Wendy Wert

On November 14, 2013 the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (Academy) participated in the fourth annual Los Angeles County Public Works Women’s Leadership Legacy Conference by hosting an interactive break-out session titled Women as Leaders in the Engineering and Scientific Professions. This event drew more than 600 attendees to the Pasadena Convention Center to share professional experiences with the nation’s top female authors, television personalities, and business leaders. Under the theme of The You Revolution, this innovative conference featured inspirational addresses, interactive break-out sessions, book signings, meet-and-greet sessions, and vendor booths. This year’s star-studded line-up of presenters included Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina: best-selling authors Hollye Dexter, Samantha Dunn, and Amy Friedman; award winning documentary producer Martha Adams; and US Geological Survey Seismologist Dr. Lucile M. Jones. The event also featured the Dean of Pepperdine University School of Business and Management, Dr. Linda Livingstone; Director of Military and Veterans Affairs, Ruth Wong; and Director of Los Angeles County Public Works Department, Gail Farber. In this climate of constant change, there is a need for strong, committed leadership. Leadership skills are needed not only by those who occupy conventional governance roles. But, history has shown that some of the most important changes have been inspired by ordinary people courageous enough to lead. The Academy and Public Works recognize the need to engage the talents of diverse individuals in the engineering and scientific professions. This shared commitment to quality leadership in the technical fields led to a highly successful inaugural panel discussion. Judy Johnson, LA Basin Business Development Manager, of URS introduced the Academy’s interactive break-out session. The Academy’s Agencies and Government representative Grace Robinson Chan is the Chief Engineer and General Manager of the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles. Ms. Chan opened with a humorous advice: Everyone should be themselves… unless you’re Beyonce. Then be Beyonce! After the laughter settled, she explained the importance of honesty in all professional interactions. Before we can lead others, we must first understand ourselves. We need to distinguish our talents and weaknesses, in order to use each to their maximum benefit.

CWEA is accepting submissions for the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Paper Competition until March 15, 2014.

CWEA awards a $500 prize to winners in each category and advances the winners to the national WEF Student Paper Competition. The Undergraduate/Graduate Student Paper Competition is intended to promote the education of undergraduate / graduate students in water pollution control, water quality problems, water‐related concerns, hazardous wastes or related areas. It also is intended to provide an opportunity for state and national recognition of participating students.

Contact Amanda Schmidt, SYPC Past-Chair for more information: [email protected] Link to guidelines: http://cweasyp.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/cwea-student-paper-comp-2014-final.pdf

The Academy’s Academia and Research representative Jeanette Brown is a Professor of Practice at Manhattan College, and WEF Past Director. Dr. Brown encouraged involvement in professional organizations such as the Academy. As we move forward in pursuit of our goals, we need to lift others up with us as well.

The Academy’s Industry and Business representative Kris Morico is a leader of corporate environmental programs at General Electric. She advised attendees to have a good sense of humor, and a little brevity! Ms. Morico stressed the importance of relationships with professional mentors, colleagues, and friends as a key factor in career development.

A reoccurring theme, throughout the conference, was the idea that one person, with a passion can change the world. The success of this event demonstrates the need for more of these forums.

LABS Support at Sewer Science Workshop at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

Article and Photo by: Ian Mckenzie On Saturday November 16th LABS President Ian Mackenzie and Students and Young Professionals Chair Rachel Deco volunteered at the Sewer Science Workshop at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Fall Region VI Conference Pre-College Initiative. The initiative, which aims to encourage more youth to enter college and major in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields was attended by an enthusiastic group of high school and middle school students together with parents and teachers. Rachel contributed to the workshop with an account of her own experiences as a STEM student and environmental professional and provided the audience with some examples of career options available to STEM students.

Thomas Wyatt from the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation presented a demonstration of wastewater treatment which began with an introduction to the treatment process and the identification of the products that can wind up in the sewer. It continued with the primary treatment process and showed the separation of floatables and denser sludge from influent which results in a cleaner primary effluent. Secondary treatment was discussed, and workshop ended with summary of the methods used to determine the quality of water. The latest LABS of CWEA newsletter were handed out to student participants as well as a list of STEM scholarships compiled by LABS.
