Program Philosophy and Purpose

The purpose of the community project is to provide participants with an additional

educational experience beyond the monthly sessions. Participants are expected to gain the following from the community project:

• Experience in community problem solving and issue resolution; • Knowledge about a community organization while seeking resolution of a problem or issue; • Experience in working effectively in a group setting; • Knowledge that they can make a significant contribution to the well-being of the community; • An opportunity to demonstrate leadership.

Participants select their projects after learning about opportunities confronting the community and according to their interests. The projects selected are outlined in this book.

If you or your organization have a topic with community-wide impact and you would like a future Leadership Marshfield group to help solve it, contact us.

A huge thank you is extended to Todd Diedrich and Tom Rentmeester for their facilitation and leadership of the projects portion of this program, and monthly review of the leadership habits.

Special thanks to Sally Cutler who facilitated the two-day retreat, setting the tone for the entire program.

MACCI’s first Leadership Class graduated in May 1993. This 2014 class was recruited in

the summer of 2013. Members participate in a series of eight informative one day programs and develop group projects designed to meet each individual’s interests and community needs.

The Leadership Marshfield Program can best be defined as:

• Identifying and developing current and future leaders. • Acquainting these leaders with community needs and problems. • Enabling these individuals to be better prepared to face the issues and problems which will confront our community’s future. • Preparing and challenging them to become involved.

This book is a result of our 22nd year’s efforts. We present to you, the community, our 2014 graduates of LEADERSHIP MARSHFIELD.

Participants: David Buehler Angie Pero Chris Revie John Richmond Mitch Spindler Breanna Speth

Description of Project:Goal: Increase awareness of the impact of chlorides in Marshfield’s drinking water and prevention techniques to reduce their harmful impact.

Project Method: Our awareness project will include a campaign involving video, PowerPoint, and brochure. Marshfield Utilities will be highly involved in ensuring the sustainability of this project as they influence community stakeholders in taking part in alternative practices available to help reduce chlorides. The informational resources made available will aid as tools to evoke interest and motivate stakeholders to change their current salt usage practices while aiding in the prevention of unnecessary and/ or overuse of chlorides.

Summary: The increase of chlorides in our drinking water is a growing concern. This increase can be attributed to road salts used for de-icing and to residential and commercial water softeners. Chlorides in the water supply can have a harmful impact on our environment: 1) corrosion of pipes, which can cause heavy metals to leach into drinking water, 2) result in the increase of sodium levels in drinking water, which can lead to hypertension, and 3) may also be harmful to our environment by leaching into and impacting organisms through the water cycle. While there are techniques to helping reduce chloride in the water, these have proven to be expensive and not entirely successful. The best method of addressing this problem is prevention.

Status of Project:City of Marshfield administration meetings and research has concluded. Powerpoint and brochure are partially complete. The video will conclude on or around March 14, shortly after taping. We will be meeting with Marshfield Utilities representative to discuss sustainability. Project is on track for April 16 Leadership Marshfield graduation date.

Nutrition on the Weekends (NOW) Leadership Academy Retreat

Participants: Darlyne Keller Mary Beth Knoeck Jennifer Waters-Plemon Adam Wegner Patrick Zeps Holly Zopfi

Description of Project:The Nutrition on Weekends (NOW) program is intended to assist families with providing healthy, easy-to-prepare nutritional foods for their child during the weekend. United Way started this program in the fall of 2013, and is now a collaborative project between United Way, area staff and teachers of our elementary schools, and our 2014 Leadership Marshfield team to supply children, free of charge, with health snacks. Each student who qualifies will receive a backpack of healthy food items for the weekend. This requires the coordination of many volunteers to pack and deliver the backpacks to the area elementary schools for distribution on a weekly basis.

Status of Project:This project is coming along well. The foundation of what it takes to provide these children with the food items is complete, and our Leadership Marshfield group has taken over the project as of March 2014.

Current efforts focus on streamlining the process and improving the program. This includes exploring what it would take to expand the program over the summer so no gap exists between school years, and taking on additional needs through other schools. A focus has also been placed on further fundraising activities and opportunities.

Participants: Paula Albright Kristen Harvey Keresa Kilty Megan Kramas Sam Warp Jr.

Description of Project:This day will be drastically different from last year’s retreat. We set out to put a new spin on the concept and ended up with a total remake. The day will be based on the bestselling book, “Seven Habits for Highly Successful Teens”. The students are familiar with the book, but this day is spent driving home the reality of what the seven principals can mean in any one’s life, especially the mind of a sixth grader. We will incorporate a facilitator to lead small groups on interactive challenges and use motivational speakers to wrap this into everyday life. There will be very little preaching because the day is non-stop activities centered on how to improve ones’ life by changing their outlook on the world and how they interact with the people around them. Time will limit us with a separate challenge for most of the key habits. There will be some time set aside in the afternoon for them to work on group projects, but the morning will be one to remember.

Status of Project:The day of the Leadership Academy Retreat is set for April 3, 2014. It will be held at St. Joseph Hospital with most of the planning now close to finished. The motivational speakers have been set and the outline for the day is finalized. The props need to be secured, menu to be set, at least one practice day is scheduled and supporting material yet to be purchased. The entire project is really coming together with the support from all the members and generous help of several sponsors. It will be an inspirational day for the students, project members and staff.

Marshfield Community Bike Share VolunteerMarshfield.org

Participants: Jason Adamski Celene Carlson Ken Forrest Christy Ogurek Preston Tippen

Description of Project:The Marshfield community has many agencies who are in need of volunteers. Our community also has many individuals and groups who are looking to lend a “helping hand.” VolunteerMarshfield.org exists to connect the two and facilitate people with Helping Hands to be able to Fill the Hearts of those in our community through volunteerism.

Our goal is to help the marketing department at the Marshfield Area United Way office, through promotion & education, increase the effectiveness of this new website to ultimately increase volunteerism in our city. Our desire is that some of the methods used and relationships formed through our project’s efforts would create an ongoing cycle of promotion for volunteerism and the Marshfield Area United Way.

Project Scope:1. Market & promote new agencies/organizations to register and use the site

2. Educate existing & new agencies/organizations on how to effectively use the site

3. Market & promote so new volunteers will register and use the site

Status of Project:The website was launched in June of 2013 but never received promotion or attention to get it off the ground. We have a promotion & marketing strategy that includes; print materials for local agencies and organizations, t-shirts, a blog posting strategy, and social media components to recruit new agencies as well as new volunteers. We have reached out to registered agencies to assist them in effectively using the website and recruiting the volunteers they desperately need. In addition we have helped to make VolunteerMarshfield.org more user friendly. You can help! Register at www.VolunteerMarshfield.org today and pick your favorite agencies and area(s) of interest.

Participants: Dr. Roger Krogstad Matt McLean Jane Robeson Ted Ryan Carolyn Totzke

Description of Project:The mission of the Marshfield Community Bike Share is to offer residents and visitors use of easily accessible bicycles at little or no cost as a transportation and/or recreational option in Marshfield. This program will offer 3 locations to pick up and drop of bikes spread throughout the community. Bikes and helmets will be checked out in a similar fashion as a library would check out a book. The participants would sign liability waivers and an agreement, leave a small deposit of $2 (refundable on return of bicycle to same location) for a same day rental, maximum of 12 hours.

The Marshfield Community Bike Share hopes to offer transportation for community members that need it and recreational options for community members and visitors alike. This program will also support healthy lifestyle activities locally and is a green option for transportation.

Status of Project:Bikes are currently in production and partnerships with local businesses and organizations in regards to hosting bicycles for check-out, bicycle maintenance & repair, and bicycle procurement are established as we are finalizing details. The group has prepared paperwork for the bicycle check-out & check-in procedure, liability waivers, and partnership agreements. The group has created a Marshfield Community Bike Share logo and a marketing plan and marketing material for the program. We are looking to do a soft roll out of the program this summer with hopes to grow by the summer of 2015.

Leadership Marshfield Alumni Network“How do I stay involved in Leadership Marshfield?”

The Leadership Marshfield Alumni Network allows graduates to stay involved in the Leadership Marshfield program. It provides ongoing support, new leadership and learning opportunities for alumni and fellowship for current and previous participants.

Current Alumni activities include the following:

- “Adopt A Highway” Each year, alumni members pick up trash along a two-mile stretch of Highway 80 South between Marshfield and Pittsville as part of the state’s program.

- Continuing Leadership Various workshops are offered to strengthen professional development skills.

- Scholarships are made available to individuals interested in participating in the Leadership Marshfield program, through the Leadership Marshfield Alumni. Individuals must be employed by a non-profit organization.

- Grant dollars are awarded to the current class should they request start-up dollars for their projects.

- Christmas Giving Project For the past several Christmas seasons, the Alumni have raised funds to buy children’s gifts for families served by agencies. In 2013, a total of $1,000 was raised by the Alumni through personal donations and a check was presented to the Personal Development

Center to purchase items needed for families they serve.

- Alumni Project Presentation Alumni have given talks regarding their projects from their Leadership Marshfield class and some have assisted in planning and facilitating future Leadership Marshfield program days.

Alumni are recognized annually with an “Alumnus of the Year” award. The award was presented to Kate Kaz in 1999, Bette Adler in 2000, Donna Rozar in 2001, Heather Holden in 2002, Mary Fehrenbach in 2003, Thom Gerretsen in 2004, Sue Decker in 2005, Dale Marth in 2006, Todd Diedrich in 2007, Kathy Meidl in 2008, Brenda Dillenburg in 2009, Al Nystrom in 2010, Mary Blanchard in 2011, Peg Geegan in 2012, Dr. Lori Bents in 2013, and Tammy Meissner in 2014.

Perspectives, MACCI’s monthly newsletter, recognizes accomplishments of the Leadership Marshfield Alumnus throughout the year.

As a Leadership Marshfield graduate and as an alumnus, you will receive notification from the MACCI office about Leadership Marshfield Alumnus activities. If you should have any questions, call the MACCI office at 715-384-3454 or email: [email protected] to stay connected!

This is the beginning of a new day.

You have been given this day to use as you will.

You can waste it or use it for good.

What you do today is important

because you are exchanging

a day of your life for it.

When tomorrow comes,

this day will be gone forever;

and in its place is something

that you have left behind...
