AFTER SALES SERVICE OF VOLKSWAGEN

• The plans include introduction of new models, giving more incentives to dealers and improving after-sales services to address some of the main complaints it has been facing.

• The automaker is also looking at reducing cost, such as through using more locally-sourced components and tightening sales and marketing operations, to make its cars more affordable in India's price-sensitive market.

• To utilise capacity at the Pune plant even as it works on the turnaround, Volkswagen (VW) has increased exports from India.

VOLKSWAGEN EMISSIONS SCANDAL• On 18 September 2015, the United States Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act to German automaker Volkswagen Group, after it was found that the automaker had intentionally programmed turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engines to activate certain emissions controls only during laboratory emissions testing.

• The programming caused the vehicles' nitrogen oxide (NOx) output to meet US standards during regulatory testing, but emit up to 40 times more NOxin real-world driving.

• Volkswagen put this programming in about eleven million cars worldwide, and in 500,000 in the United States, during model years 2009 through 2015.

VOLKSWAGEN EMISSION SCANDAL• These findings stemmed from a study on emissions

discrepancies between European and US models of vehicles commissioned in 2014 by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), summing up the data from three different sources on 15 vehicles.

• Among the research groups was a group of five scientists at West Virginia University, who detected additional emissions during live road tests on two out of three diesel cars.

• ICCT also purchased data from two other sources. They provided their findings to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in May 2014.

OTHER IRREGULARITIES• On 3 November 2015, VW revealed that its internal investigation found

that CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures were also affected by "irregularities".

• These new issues involve mainly diesel, but also some petrol models, affecting approximately 800,000 vehicles equipped with 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 litre motors from VW, Skoda, Audi and Seat.

• The company suggested that fixing the problem might cost an additional €2bn.

• On 20 November 2015, the EPA said that VW officials told the agency that all 3.0-liter TDI diesel engines sold in the US from 2009 through 2015 were also fitted with emissions-cheating software, in the form of "alternate exhaust control devices".

• These are prohibited in the United States, however the software is legal in Europe.
