Synopsis and Interest:I am a professor of Anesthesiology at the State University of New York at Buffalo

and my true interest lies in teaching other individual in the field of medicine. While I

teach, I am a student for life. I believe that medicine is an art based on science. My

favorite analogy is that medicine is a carriage and science is a horse. Without the horse,

the carriage comes to a stall. Therefore, the term Physician Scientist becomes a

misnomer and with no interest in science, even the best physician soon becomes a

technician.

Education:

1. Doctor of Philosophy (Microbiology) 1999, Master of Arts (Microbiology) 1996, State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo New York. This doctorate was completed while I was a faculty member with UB and working at the VA Western New York Healthcare System as an attending physician. All the laboratory works were done under Professor Paul Knight’s direction in his laboratory. The main theme of my research work was the study of the oxidative metabolism in the acute lung injury produced after aspiration of the acidic material with or without food particles. The results of this work which was sponsored by the National Institute of Health were published in reputable journal such as Chest (Impact factor of 7.3), Anesthesiology (Impact factor of 6.8), Anesthesia & Analgesia (Impact factor of 3.85) and a dissertation is registered with the SUNY-Buffalo under “ Oxidative Metabolism in Acute Lung Injury” in March of 1999.

2. Advanced Academic Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship (1995-1996), State University of New York at Buffalo Affiliated Hospitals, Buffalo, New York. This training commenced on July 1st, 1995 and ended on Nov 13, 1996. The training was a combined clinical and research in nature during which, I rotated in UB-affiliated hospital and completed an advanced training in cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia. The spectrum and variety of the cases included anesthesia care for patients undergoing coronary bypass grafting with or without using cardiopulmonary bypass, open-heart surgery for repair or replacement of heart valves, repair of congenital heart diseases in adults with 2 additional months of pediatric cardiac anesthesia rotation at Children and Women’s Hospital of Buffalo. I also had an opportunity to provide anesthesia care for patients undergoing cardiac transplantation and electrocardiophysiologic procedures. For the research component of this training, I completed my basic science research experiments in Professor Paul Knight’s laboratory, which were also part of my doctorate training.

3. Residency in Anesthesiology, State University of New York at Buffalo Affiliated Hospitals, Buffalo, New York. This training started on July 1st 1992 and continued through June 30th, 1995. During this period, I had an opportunity to provide over 2,200 supervised anesthesia care to whole cadre of surgical pathologies (general abdominal, vascular, cardiothoracic, neurological, otorhynolaryngeological, ophthalmic, orthopedic, spine, urological, pediatric, gynecological and obstetric). Furthermore, outside of the operating room, I rotated 2 months in the Pain clinic of the Buffalo General

Hospital for chronic pain management under the direction of Dr. Gerald Peer and 3 months in critical Care Units of Buffalo General Hospital under direction of Drs. Frank Booth and Lawrence Cohen and at the VA Western NY Healthcare System under the guidance of Dr. Pedro Mendez.

4. Residency in General Surgery, Easton Hospital affiliated with Hahnemann University, PA, The training started in July 1991 and was completed in June 1992. The Program Director was Dr. Jay B. Fisher and the program encompassed 12 months of clinical training in general surgery. Easton Hospital is a community hospital and provides care for all specialties other than cardiac surgery. As a resident the score for my in-training exam, which was taken in Jan 1992, was at 99th percentile.

5. Clinical/ Research Fellow Cardiothoracic Surgery, Toronto General Hospital University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, This was one year training from 1990 to 1991, which I had to leave to start the general surgery at Easton Hospital. The program Director for this training was Professor Tomas Salerno. During this training, I worked with world-known Cardiac Surgeons such as Professor Tyrone David, Dr. Richard Weisel and Dr. Linda Mickleborough. I assisted in wide variety of open-heart surgery and covered calls in the cardiac intensive care units.

6. Residency in General Surgery, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran. This was a comprehensive residency in general surgery as a part of my acceptance into a 6 year residency in Cardiac Surgery 93 general Surgery + 3 year Cardiac Surgery). This training started in 1986 and was interrupted in 1988 as I moved to Canada to continue my cardiac surgery training in University of Toronto. During this period, I assisted and performed in whole cadre of general surgery (breast, abdomen, hernia, colorectal and thyroid). Furthermore, as Straight residency enrollment, I had to attend the military hospital for a period of 3 month in every training years. This military rotation provided me with an excellent experience in handling patients with military trauma. I performed over 72 splenectomies, over 100 limb amputations and several vascular injuries requiring vascular anastomosis.

7. Rotating Internship, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran. This 12-month training commenced in July 1985 and ended in June 1986. It included rotations in Medicine (4 months), Surgery (3 months), Pediatrics (2 months), OB & GYN (2 months) and one month elective in Infectious Disease.

8. Doctor of Medicine, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. The program is an accepted but non-accredited education by AAMC. The program is for 7 years of education including Internship or 6 years excluding internship. The graduates of this program are allowed to participate in National Board Examiner exams administered through the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). As I ranked 32 in the National University Admission test, I got acceptance into this school, which was my first choice. I was further granted Scientific Honor Student Merit award, which allowed me to study the medical school at no cost and receive stipend during the period of my schooling. The program included comprehensive general premed courses and continues to basic science and clinical science courses and clerkships.
