1 Classic and Folk Songs A NOTE FROM WCU PRESIDENT MARY CARVALHO Welcome to our final concert for the 2015 – 2016 concert year. It is amazing how quickly the year passes by. It seems like yesterday we were meeting Michael Chapel, our new artistic director and Alejandro Alumbreros, our accompanist. Throughout the rehearsals we have learned about each other and how to make great music together. This concert is the culmination of our work together for this year. The folk songs that we present often have a bouncy and catchy melody. It was a great way to tell a story or a history. The songs may even seem familiar. If you find yourself humming or singing along, consider joining us in fall for another wonderful year of music. We’d love to have you! To keep up with everything that we are doing check out our web site: www.choraluion.org. The auditions for next fall will be announced there. IF you are a Milwaukee Brewers fan, you may see us singing the national anthem before the team’s June 10 game against the New York Mets. Thank you for your support this year and we look forward to seeing you next fall when we start our new concert year. Mary Carvalho President, Waukesha Choral Union

A NOTE FROM WCU PRES IDENT M ARY CARVALHO

Welcome to our final concert for the 2015 – 2016 concert year.

ABOUT THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Michael Chapel, Artistic Director of the Waukesha Choral Union, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of

Fine Arts in Music and a Master’s Degree in Music Education – with an emphasis on choral conducting. He is the director of choral activities and musical theatre at Brown Deer Middle/High School; he is also the fine arts coordinator for the School District of Brown

Deer. Additionally, Mr. Chapel is the choir director and lead service accompanist at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Saukville, WI.

Michael has served as an adjudicator for the past 15 years at concert and solo-ensemble festivals sponsored by the Wisconsin School Music Association. He is currently the Choir Coordinator for the WSMA Middle-Level State Honors Project, and is also active as a clinician for middle and high school choral groups.

Good evening and welcome to our annual May concert. The Waukesha Choral Union is excited to return to Carroll University. The Humphrey Art Center provides wonderful acoustics and an intimate setting to share our final program of the 2015-16 season: “How Can I Keep from Singing – the Classics, and Folk Songs of the Americas.”

Folk song literature is becoming more and more available in our digital world and many, many songs are becoming available to perform from all corners of the world. WCU could easily devote the next five seasons strictly to the folk songs of South America, but we also have a strong commitment to bring classical choral literature to you. Tonight’s program reflects folk song literature and classical masterworks. Gabriel Faure’s “Requeim” is joined by seven folk songs from North, South and Central America.

Thank you for your gracious and continuing support of the arts in your community. We very much appreciate you being here with us this evening – and we hope to see you again in the fall for our upcoming 2016-17 season.
