TRANSCRIPT

At CLIA, we love cruising so much you will often see us using metaphorical phrases like “full

speed ahead” and “don’t be left at the pier” in communicating with you, our valued members.

While using these phrases adds levity to our messages, one phrase in particular is most fitting

as we embark—see, there I go again—on another year. It is time to “chart your course” for

success in 2017.

Charting your course for success is something that is easy to do if you break down the parts of

your professional life and set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-based

(SMART) goals for each aspect of your career. Start with how you manage time and

organization, which are two foundational elements of any profession, then focus on your

performance and growth. This is where your CLIA membership comes into play.

You have made an investment in yourself by becoming a CLIA member, entitling you to a

myriad of business-building benefits, professional development opportunities and personal

travel perks. As much as we have a responsibility to you to build significant value into CLIA

member benefits and continually communicate how those benefits can help you succeed, you

have a responsibility to yourself—and your career success—to not overlook them.

In the coming weeks, we will be emailing information on how you can get the most out of your

CLIA membership in 2017, leveraging your member benefits into competitive advantage that

will help you increase your cruise sales and take your career to the next level. Check out our

newest webinar, Setting Sail for Sales Success, scheduled for Thursday, January 26th at 3:00

p.m. (EST). Click here to register for this free, members-only webinar.

In the meantime, log into your MyCLIA online dashboard (www.cruising.org/MyCLIA) and

explore all of the powerful benefits to which you are entitled. If you cannot recall your user ID

(which is typically your professional email address) and password, there is a link for you to

reset your credentials.

Your CLIA membership is not simply the process of receiving an EMBARC ID, it is being part

of a global community of professionals who drive the cruise industry forward and prosper as a

result. Please deepen your level of involvement this year and be an active participant in CLIA

as we continue to advocate, educate and promote for the common interests of the cruise

community.

All ahead full!

A NOTE FROM CHARLIE

TWO QUICK TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF WAVE SEASON

There is no greater opportunity for travel consultants

to drive cruise sales than Wave Season. What

started out as a promotional campaign lasting one

week has grown, over the years, to become a three-

month-long sales marathon (January through March)

resulting, for most agents, in more than 70 percent

of their cruise sales for the year.

Given the fact that cruising has consistently proven

itself to be the fastest growing, most profitable

segment of the leisure travel industry, travel

consultants looking to significantly move their cruise

sales needle forward must make the most of this

extraordinary time of year. Here are two ways to do

it:

1. Sharpen Your Axe — There is an old fable

about a lumberjack who chopped more wood

than another lumberjack working alongside him,

just by taking the time to sharpen his axe. The

other lumberjack never stopped, choosing

instead to chop harder, and he came up short in

the end.

Apply the moral of this story to your career as a

travel consultant and sharpen your skills in

advance of Wave Season.

• Make certain to renew your CLIA Travel

Agency Membership or Individual Agent

Membership for the coming year, so you can

access the definitive industry training.

• Take advantage of CLIA’s online courses

and other professional development

opportunities. You are entitled to two free

online courses with your membership (six, if

you are affiliated with a Premier Agency

Member).

2

• Learn about the newest cruise ships and their

onboard features and amenities.

• Gain a solid understanding of up-and-coming

ports of call, along with any unique shore

excursion opportunities they might offer your

clients.

• Learn about that cruise line you are not

currently selling, but want to sell. Visit their

trade-facing website and review their learning

resources.

• Reach out to cruise line BDMs to participate in

any ship inspections in your area. If you are

not located near a port, look out for a CLIA live

training event near you, so you can experience

virtual ship inspections.

• Communicate your CLIA member status to

your cruise line BDMs and inquire about any

upcoming seminars at sea or FAM trips. Your

CLIA membership affords you priority invitation

and confirmation to these experiential learning

events.

2. Leverage the Loyal — If you are great at what

you do, your loyal, repeat clients love you. Help

them understand what Wave Season is all about.

Ask them if they would act as an advocate on your

behalf, sending referrals and endorsing you

through testimonials and vacation pictures that

you can post to your social media platforms. While

you must always demonstrate your value,

leveraging those who have experienced your great

work firsthand—who are happily willing to share

their experiences—multiplies the extent of your

market reach and establishes you as a cruise

travel authority.

2017 MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

CLIA 2017 membership efforts are continuing at a

strong pace. We’re thrilled to provide you with the

best benefits and resources to navigate the cruise

industry. These benefits include Cruise Finder which

allows you to access ship information, itineraries,

onboard offerings and more across CLIA’s Global

Cruise Line Members. Cruise tv is another important

benefit that offers engaging and informative videos

you can share directly with your clients, through

social media or email.

We’ve also planned a robust professional

development lineup for 2017, including more

locations and opportunities for you to get certified at

any stage in your career. Don’t forget to take

advantage of our personalized career counselling

services to help you better understand our

certification and certificate tracks to take your career

to the next level. Our Professional Development

team is here to guide you through one-on-one calls.

3

We continue to listen and learn from you to provide

additional benefits, professional development

opportunities and meaningful engagements with

cruise industry leaders.

For any questions, please email our Membership

Team at [email protected] or give us a call at (202)

759-9370. As always, CLIA’s Membership Team is

available Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM EST to

assist you with any questions or information that you

may require.

CLIA’S NEW LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS)

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

As part of our continuous effort to provide you with

the best service, CLIA is proud to announce the

implementation of our new Learning Management

System (LMS). The LMS allows your CLIA course,

quiz and certification information to be stored,

managed and accessed within a very robust system

that is directly connected to your membership record.

This LMS is a significant step towards building

CLIA’s Career Seascape, your one-stop shop for the

official training and certification of the cruise industry.

Prior to the launch of the LMS, your professional

development records were housed in two separate

systems that did not “speak” to one another: the

legacy system known as the CLIA Academy and the

temporary system known as Articulate Online. The

CLIA Academy was an outdated system on a non-

sustainable platform that did not allow the flexibility

needed to provide you with quality product and

experiences. Further, when we updated several of

our online course offerings, CLIA Academy could not

house the new technology.

This is what led us to the temporary solution of

Articulate Online. We moved our updated online

courses and quizzes here until we were ready to build

our new LMS. Articulate Online was a temporary

solution that provided us with the ability to utilize

current software and technology to develop courses

and provided the ability for you to easily access the

training. However, Articulate Online did not “talk”

directly to our membership database. Therefore, the

launch of our new LMS has resolved the matters of a

legacy system and temporary fix, providing a long-

term solution that benefits you!

In our new LMS, you can take your online courses

and quizzes, and manage your certifications by

logging directly into your MyCLIA account. We are still

working to add functionality and updates to further

expand the great benefits offered with this system.

Want to learn more? Stay tuned for a “Welcome to

CLIA’s New LMS” webinar in mid-February!

How has your CLIA membership

helped you in your career?Being a CLIA member has helped me in a variety

of ways. Personally, it has helped me gain

confidence in selling travel. By attending

conferences such as Cruise360, I am kept up to

date on all of the changes and growth in the

industry through seminars and interactive classes.

Getting the chance to experience ship inspections

on cruise lines I may not have sailed on before is

also wonderfully helpful in selling that line. Being a

member of CLIA differentiates me from other

agents who are not members. It says to my clients

that I am recognized by the cruise industry as a

professional in my field—and my clients deserve

nothing but excellence!

GAIL MCLEOD, MCC

Tell us about yourself. What is your

current role?I entered the travel business right out of college in

the 70s. I left the industry to raise my family. About

four years ago, l decided to re-enter the world of

travel and bought a Cruise Planners franchise

which I operate out of my home in St. Louis,

Missouri. My concentration and/or specialty is

luxury travel and the majority of my business is

cruises.

Are you CLIA Certified? If so, what

designation and how has that

certification impacted your career? Yes, I have my MCC and am currently working on

my ECC. Being certified brings a higher level of

value to my business. It tells my clients that I am

highly trained and an expert in the cruise industry

and that they can trust my ability to recommend

the perfect cruise for them.

TRAVEL AGENT TIPS

Travel Concierge, Cruise Planners

Town and Country, MO

What best practices should travel

agents adopt for Wave Season?Wave Season is like a gift for travel agents. Most

of the cruise lines offer great deals with extra

value such as 2-for-1 fares, onboard credits, free

gratuities, upgrades, beverage packages, shore

excursions, etc., so it is imperative as a travel

agent to keep abreast of all the choices being

offered from the cruise lines. Stay informed, take

webinars, and familiarize yourself with ALL the

cruise lines. Keep organized and know who your

BDMs are if you should need them.

How can agents build their

business during Wave Season?Don’t assume your clients know about Wave

Season. Reach out to them and educate them

about the unique opportunities Wave Season has

to offer. Explain to them the many extra benefits

they will receive by booking their next cruise

during these important three months. If they don't

have anything in mind, give them some

suggestions. Use your expertise. Do your research

on your clients and their interests and suggest

their next vacation to them. Also, ASK for referrals.

All of your clients know someone who travels. If

you have done a good job on their travel, they

should have no hesitation in recommending you.

98 percent of my business is through referrals.

Want to be featured in our Travel Agent Tips?

Contact Charlie Sylvia at [email protected].

What should Travel Agents avoid

during Wave Season?Avoid over-scheduling your personal world outside

of your business. This is a busy time for travel

agents and we all need to concentrate on "selling

cruises," doing a little extra promoting, and

building our businesses. If you work out of your

home, you need to be disciplined. It is so easy to

get distracted with day-to-day chores and social

media. Make a pact with yourself to stay focused

on your business, but also take necessary breaks

so as to not get overwhelmed. Organization is key.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

To some, exploring the beautiful and exciting Far

East seems like an unattainable dream.

But now through cruising, travelers are given the

opportunity to visit these far away countries, like

Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan

and Japan in an easy and convenient way. While

often logistically challenging destinations, cruisers

can enjoy this growing destination in a relaxing,

efficient and cost effective way.

Cruising through Asia offers many varied options -

from contemporary, to luxury, river to expedition - this

continent can fit the style and taste of every traveler.

For example, many of the popular river lines can be

found plying the rivers of the Mekong in Southeast

Asia or the Yangetze in China, offering a glimpse into

the interior cities and landscapes of Asia.

QUICK FACT: DID YOU KNOW THAT THE CRUISE INDUSTRY IS REGULATED AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL BY THE IMO?

CLIA JOINS EFFORTS TO END THE ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE

PUBLIC AFFAIRS UPDATE

In addition to national and flag state regulatory

authorities, the cruise industry is also regulated at the

international level by the International Maritime

Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the

United Nations (UN) that addresses maritime

affairs. The IMO creates a regulatory framework for

the shipping industry that is fair and effective,

universally adopted and implemented.

To work toward cruising’s continued viability, CLIA

participates at the IMO with consultative status as a

non-governmental organization on behalf of the

cruise industry when international regulations and

guidelines are under development. CLIA’s active

participation at the IMO has had a tremendous

impact on the modern cruise industry and its diverse

community including CLIA’s travel agent members.

Read more about CLIA’s participation at the IMO

here.

CLIA is actively engaged in efforts to reduce or

eliminate trade in illegal wildlife. This month, CLIA

formally joined the U.S. Wildlife Trafficking Alliance

(USWTA), an industry-wide effort to combat the

illegal wildlife trade around the globe. As a natural

extension of its participation in United for Wildlife

which also seeks to shutdown illegal wildlife

trafficking, CLIA will assist the Alliance by

communicating its mission and opportunities to

become involved to other CLIA Members.

In partnering with the Alliance, CLIA joins other travel

and tourism non-profit organizations and companies

including the Adventure Travel Trade Association

(ATTA), the American Society of Travel Agents

(ASTA), JetBlue Airways, Carnival Corporation, and

Royal Caribbean International to fight wildlife

trafficking.

CLIA RELEASES 2017 STATE OF THE CRUISE INDUSTRY OUTLOOK AND CRUISE TRAVEL TRENDS FORECAST

Travel & Cruise Magazine, the official magazine of the global

cruise industry, provides insight into the inner-workings and

happenings of the industry with exclusive content from cruise

lines executives and prominent stakeholders. This quarterly

magazine is developed in partnership with the Florida-

Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA). Click here to read the

most recent issue of Travel & Cruise Magazine.

CLIA & FCCA RELEASED THE THIRD QUARTER ISSUE OF TRAVEL & CRUISE MAGAZINE

FOURTH QUARTERLY TRAVEL AGENT CRUISE INDUSTRY OUTLOOK REPORT

In December, CLIA released the fourth and final Travel Agent Cruise

Industry Outlook Report of 2016, revealing key cruise travel trends and

insight into the current state of the travel agent industry. This ongoing

quarterly research study from CLIA is designed to forecast trends in

the cruise industry among the travel agent community. This installment

of the report found that travel agent sales remain strong, overall cruise

spending is growing, and travel agents are influencing advance cruise

bookings. Click here to read the full report.

The newly released 2017 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook

details a steady pace of cruise travel interest and significant

investment in the industry, while also highlighting the top eight

cruise travel trends predicted to have an impact on the industry in

the coming year.

Increase in cruise travel is expected to continue throughout 2017,

with an estimated 25.3 million passengers expected to sail in

2017, a strong surge from 15.8 million just 10 years prior (2007).

More ships will set sail in 2017 as well. CLIA reports that cruise

lines are scheduled to debut 26 new ocean, river and specialty

ships in 2017 for a total investment of more than $6.8 billion in new

vessels. From 2017-2026 the industry is expected to introduce a

total of 97 new cruise ships totaling an estimated investment of

$53 billion through 2026. Click here to read the full report.

CRUISE LINE SPOTLIGHT

Crystal CruisesCrystal Cruises has marked another celebratory

milestone in its extensive expansion program,

celebrating the start of construction for two custom

designed river vessels. The two new ships, named

Crystal Debussy and Crystal Ravel will join the

Crystal River Cruises fleet on the Rhine River in

spring 2018, offering full balcony suite

accommodations for 106 guests, a swimming pool,

and Crystal cuisine in multiple restaurants. The new

ships, being constructed at MV WERFTEN's Wismar

yard, are designed to offer Crystal sailings on the

Rhine, the Danube, the Main and the Moselle rivers.

Princess CruisesPrincess Cruises will soon debut new wearable

technology aboard a select number of its ships,

offering an enhanced onboard passenger experience.

Known as Ocean Medallion, the wearable or carried

disk offers a number of features and passenger

enhancements, including the ability to streamline

embarkation, allowing families to locate fellow family

members, and offering enhanced customer

interaction experiences with crew members. The new

technology will initially debut aboard Regal Princess

in November before expanding to Regal and Crown

Princess in 2018. While unique to Princess Cruises

for the moment, the new technology could eventually

roll out to additional Carnival Corporation brands.

SeabournSeabourn’s newest and largest ship to date,

Seabourn Encore, officially joined the fleet following a

momentous christening ceremony in Singapore. The

new ship, docked at Singapore’s Marina Bay Cruise

Centre, was christened by her godmother, English

classical crossover soprano Sarah Brightman. The

new Seabourn Encore, the largest Seabourn ship,

carrying 604 passengers, features new dining spaces,

including The Grill by Thomas Keller and Sushi, while

also debuting The Retreat, featuring an expanded
