HIGHLIGHTS

F rom promoting people’s diplomacy on issues of peace and conflict resolution to building the world’s “greenest” cruise ship, Mr Yoshioka

Tatsuya is committed to making the world a better place in a unique way. He envisioned a borderless world that would be mutually respectful of all nationalities and free of conflicts. In 1983, he founded the Peace Boat organisation together with a group of students from Tokyo’s Waseda University and chartered a passenger ship to learn about the Japanese occupation through conversations with people from neighbouring countries.

More than 30 years later, Peace Boat has evolved into a thriving non-government organisation (NGO) and social business that has organised over 90 voyages, and taken more than 60,000 people to over 100 ports around the world for a diverse range of campaigns and learning excursions on issues like conflict resolution, human rights, and nuclear disarmament. The next chapter of Yoshioka’s vision entails addressing the crisis of global warming and climate change. He intends to lead by example in building the Peace Boat’s Ecoship - a 2,000-passenger cruise liner which would be a tour de force of technological innovations in using renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.

A UNIQUE VOYAGE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACEQ&A WITH YOSHIOKA TATSUYA, SPEAKER AT THE SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT FESTIVAL 2016

Yoshioka Tatsuya, Founder of Peace Boat

We caught up with Yoshioka for an interview on his leadership insights and how he manages to sustain Peace Boat as a social business.

On Leadership and ManagementQ: What are your key principles as a leader? What do you think makes a good leader (in any field or industry)?

We work in a very cooperative way in Peace Boat where we talk around issues and ideas. My leadership role comes on when I have to make a decision, especially if it is a difficult or contentious one. I’m often challenged by my colleagues, which I welcome, and I try to listen as much as possible. I don’t know if I always succeed personally, but I think the most crucial leadership quality is being willing to make a decision and then following through on its consequences.

On Peace Boat and Social EnterpriseQ: Peace Boat is a social cause and yet it has to function as a business in order to be sustainable. Could you explain the business model of Peace Boat?

that way. Participants pay for the cost of coming on board, and surplus funds go into our activities. Built into that is a mechanism for participants to work as volunteers, hence reducing their costs for coming on board. We wanted to find a way to fund our activities that we could control, and always be independent of any government or political movement.

On Ecoship and BeyondQ: What inspired you to come up with the concept of the Ecoship?

Peace Boat has been using chartered ships since our foundation over 30 years ago. As we have progressed from our early years of focusing on world peace to engaging with broader and diversified agendas that link peace and sustainability, we become conscious of the gap between talking about sustainability and running a conventional cruise ship. We wanted to sail on a more sustainable ship for a long time, and that collective desire led to the decision to create our own Ecoship.

Yoshioka Tatsuya will be speaking at the Singapore Management Festival 2016 on “No Borders, No Barriers: The Power of People and our Ecoship Challenge”.

social business, although we didn’t even know that term at the beginning. The first Peace Boat was funded by a large group of friends who split the cost of chartering a ship, and essentially it has continued

The 5Cs of Effective Business Writing

The ability to put your ideas across effectively and accurately in writing is an important communication skill for every business executive. If your emails and letters are clear and concise, they convey an impression of someone with a well-organised mind, who knows exactly what is needed and how to make it happen. Messages that are vague, disjointed and weak may compromise your chance of being promoted and can tarnish your professional reputation.

This workshop is designed to empower you to write for the results you want in the shortest amount of time using a simple step-by-step approach based on the fundamentals of effective email writing.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE:• Recognise and avoid common mistakes in email writing• Master the 5Cs of effective business writing• Develop clear and relevant subject headlines• Express ideas clearly and logically that are easily understood the first time• Write concisely following the KISS principle of good writing• Develop a simple four-step writing format to inspire a coherent flow• Practise good email etiquette to improve professionalism in your writing• Acquire the skill to write effectively, professionally and confidently

Leading in Uncertain TimesLeading on the Edge: Resilience and Performance under Pressure

The pressure on leaders to perform effectively within turbulent environments of ambiguity, uncertainty, and unforeseen surprises has increased exponentially. Is your leadership evolving to deal with these uncertainties? In this emotive and transformational presentation, John Peters will challenge you to reflect on your leadership style and how you cope with uncertainty and chaos, whilst challenging you to consider how you deal with crisis and opportunity. He explores vulnerability, trust and the leader as a role model.

Using his Gulf War POW experience, international media exposure, award-winning Human Factors development programme in high-performance aviation and 16 years’ consultancy business, John will explore the mindset on how to deal with uncertainty and how to ‘Lead on the Edge’.

TALK OUTLINE• Speed of learning • Survivor thinking • Accepting brutal realities • Conscious calm• Turning crises to opportunity

TRANSFORMATION SERIES

John Peters came to the world’s attention on January 1991 when his bruised and battered face flashed onto television screens around the world. On the first day of the Gulf War, a British Tornado bomber crewed by him and John Nichol was shot down over Iraqi territory and the two men were captured. After four days of mental and physical torture, they were forcibly shown on Iraqi television.

This experience catapulted John onto the world stage and he uses these experiences to help leaders question their approach. He has written two best-selling books and the documentary Tornado Down, which was the Independent Documentary of the Year and a BAFTA Award Nominee.

Mr John Peters appears by arrangement with Saxton Speakers Bureau.
