The figure above diagrams the major research areas at the Windbridge Institute and how they intersect:

Basic Parapsychology

This program explores traditional parapsychological topics (i.e., telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, and mind-matter interac-tions) as well as experimenter effects, alternative healing, intention, our connection to each other, and the potential that exists within each of us.

Life After Death

The survival of consciousness hypothesis proposes that at least part of an individual's personality or consciousness continues to survive after the death of the physical body. The Windbridge Institute is interested in all areas of survival research but is, at this time, primarily focused on studying mediums and the information they report, investigating technologies that may be useful in enhancing interaction and communication with the deceased [i.e., electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and instrumental transcommunication (ITC)], addressing reports of haunting and apparition phenomena, and exploring afterlife cosmology.

Animal Consciousness

Non-human animal consciousness research investigates a variety of phenomena including animal psi, the human-animal bond, and survival of animal consciousness after physical death.

Research Grants

Bial Foundation In 2011, we were awarded two new research grants from the Bial Foundation in Portugal. Data collection for one two-year (2011-2012) study, titled “Somatic Psi vs. Survival Psi: A Quantitative Investigation of Mediums' Phenome‐nology comparing Psychic Readings and Ostensible Communication with the Deceased,” is taking place at the Wind‐bridge Institute. The second project is a collaborative one titled “Cortical and Autonomic Responses associated with Accurate Intuition” in which Windbridge Institute co-founder and Director of Research Julie Beischel, PhD, is working with Arnaud Delorme, PhD, a neuroscientist currently at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). This is the second (and third) time that we have been funded by the Bial Foundation and we could not be more grateful.

Helene Reeder Memorial Fund Windbridge Institute co-founder and researcher Mark Boccuzzi was awarded a research grant from the Helene Reeder Memorial Fund for Research into Life after Death for his study on the use of electronic equipment to facilitate possible interactions with discarnates. This project is an outgrowth of research he has been conducting during field investigations of allegedly haunted locations since 1999 and we are grateful to have had the financial support re-quired to address this subject in a thorough and meaningful way this past year. As part of the expert opinion in-cluded with the grant application, Windbridge Institute Scientific Advisory Board member Dean Radin, PhD, stated “This study brings the haphazard field study approach into the laboratory, making it possible, at least hypothetically, to test under controlled conditions whether a discarnate can indeed intentionally interact with equipment.”

Society for Psychical Research In 2011, we also received a grant from the Survival Research Committee of England’s Society for Psychical Research (SPR) for an ongoing project titled “Anomalous Information Reception by Credentialed Mediums Regarding Non-Human Discarnates” in which we are using the standard Windbridge Institute quintuple-blind mediumship reading protocol to investigate mediums’ abilities to report accurate information about deceased companion animals.

Forever Family Foundation We submitted an application and began receiving support this year from the Forever Family Foundation (FFF) for the V.I.S.T.A. (Validating Independent Surveys of The Afterlife) Project, an ongoing study which asks the question “What is the afterlife like?” Individuals interested in supporting this research study can make a tax-deductible donation to FFF earmarked for “the VISTA Project.” See the FFF website for more information about how to make contributions online or by mail.

Grants from organizations like these are awards. They are competitive: submissions are reviewed by other researchers and experts who determine which projects have the best protocols and will contribute the most to the field. The funding from grants covers the costs of specific, large-scale research projects. How-ever, smaller, more exploratory projects and day-to-day operating costs are covered by memberships and private contributions. The results from all of these studies will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals once data collection and analysis are complete. To be notified about the status of these and other studies and to learn about opportuni-ties for volunteer research participants, please be sure to join our email list.

Launch of WIMS

Updated ‘Current Research’ Webpage

The new Current Research page on our site includes descriptions of completed and ongoing studies from our two ma-jor Research Programs: Survival of Consciousness and Additional Implications and Applications of Non-Local Con-sciousness.

Events

Afterlife Awareness Conference April 29 - May 1, 2011 Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Julie’s invited presentation for this conference was titled “Afterlife Research: Ghosts, Mediums, and other Data from the Dead.” The take-home message of her talk was: “The Windbridge Institute uses traditional scientific principles to study phenomena that most scientists have never heard of, shy away from, or discount outright. However, these phenomena address the existence of an afterlife and are, therefore, worthy of research involving proper protocol design, rigorous methodology, and appropriate statistical analysis. Any less is disrespectful to the deceased, the process of science, and our members and supporters who rely on us to convey the truth.” She discussed haunting phenomena; photographic artifacts; electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and instrumental transcommunication (ITC); and proof-focused, process-focused, and applied mediumship research.

continued on page 6...

The new Windbridge Institute Members' Site (WIMS) is a valuable collection of resources, materials, and informa-tion as well as a wonderful way for Windbridge Institute members, researchers, advisors, and mediums to connect and spend time "together" on-line.

Mark Boccuzzi reports:

"I'm very excited about the launch of WIMS. To date, we have been providing these services to members using third-party vendors. WIMS was created in-house and provides a more cost-effective benefit we can offer to members. In ad-dition, WIMS will allow us to update information more quickly and provide better support to the members who are so critical to our research and existence."

Presentations and Publications

Beischel, J. (2011). Mediumship research [Letter to the editor]. Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 199, 425-426.

In this letter to the editor, Dr. Beischel applauded this mainstream journal for including the potentially controversial

research article “An investigation of mediums who claim to give information about deceased persons” by Kelly and

Arcangel in the January 2011 issue, but noted that she had two main concerns regarding the article: (a) the authors’

incorporation of previously published methods and findings is somewhat incomplete and (b) the studies described

have methodological weaknesses beyond those which the authors themselves discuss. Dr. Beischel noted that Kelly

and Arcangel (a) indicated that researchers can determine the specificity of mediums’ statements in order to address

generality, (b) claimed that whole reading scoring systems have “not been used much” (p.13) and used a 0-10 rating

scale (p. 14); and (c) reported that formatting readings into itemized lists is a methodological difficulty (p. 13). Dr.

Beischel went on to discuss how the methods used at the Windbridge Institute address each of these topics; specifi-

cally, that (a) mediums are asked specific questions to control for general statements; (b) a user-friendly whole read-

ing scoring system is used; and (c) a straight-forward method is employed to format readings into lists of items that

allow for the collection of item scores rather than depending on raters’ free-form comments regarding certain select

items.

From the publisher: “This unprecedented two-volume set will intrigue anyone interested in

psychology, biology and neurology, science, history, arts and the humanities, and literature

on consciousness, from general readers to scholars and researchers. An impressive collec-

tion of international contributors address altered states of consciousness from the perspec-

tives of history, evolution, psychology, culture, literature, human biology, contemporary sci-

ence, and society, seeking to illuminate the causes, effects, and meanings of altered con-

sciousness. The first volume provides an introduction and centers on the importance of al-

tered states in history, culture, and the humanities, while the second volume presents bio-

logical and psychological perspectives on altered consciousness and examines their potential

for healing and pathology.”

2011 Winds of Change Features

The following refer to original articles from the Windbridge Institute Members’ quarterly e-Newsletter, Winds of Change.

By Julie Beischel, PhD:

Recommended Reading: The Truth About Grief by Ruth Davis Konigsberg

Excerpts:

“...Some facts about grief covered in the book that you may not know:

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) originated in

1969 with the publication of her book On Death and Dying and proposed that terminal patients facing their own

deaths experience each stage in order.

The stages were quickly adopted by the popular media, academia, and society in general and used to describe

the experiences of people grieving the loss of a loved one (and later, the loss of just about anything). The perva-

siveness of the five stages became readily apparent to me as I read this book when I independently ran across a

2D shooter video game called ‘Solace’ that contains five levels of play, each based on one of the ‘Five Stages of

Grief, as described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.’ The developers report that the theme arose ‘after one of our team

members lost a brother during the game’s development.’

Research has demonstrated that the stage model of grief does not reflect the reality of most people’s experi‐

ences. Konigsberg states, ‘...it’s more a grab bag of symptoms that come and go and, eventually, simply

lift’ (p.11)…”

“…The author states, ‘With this book I hope to offer you a means of escape from our habitual ways of thinking about

grief’ (p. 197)...”

Survival of Consciousness: Animal Discarnates

Excerpts:

“...During the first (and only) official mediumship reading I had

(and which started me on this research path), my mother was

accompanied by two dogs: our family Dalmatian and the small,

beige dog who we used to dog-sit regularly, each of who fol-

lowed my mom around like happy, furry shadows. (All of that

second dog's people are still living, so I guess the dog-sitting

continues on the other side.)...”

“...Regarding which types of animals communicate, Traci Bray

stated, 'dogs, cats, ponies, rabbits, snakes, goldfish---the gamut

have come through both independently and when summoned.'

Joanne Gerber added, 'I've experienced communication with all types, including hermit crabs and tarantulas!' Other

WCRMs mentioned monkeys, pigs, birds, and horses in addition to the more common dogs and cats…”

Mediumship Applications in Law Enforcement

Excerpt:

“...At this point, there is no way for detectives (and often the mediums themselves) to easily discern which items in a reading are the ones to which limited resources, time, and personnel should be dedicated. Further research is re-quired and at the Windbridge Institute, we hope we will soon have the opportunity... to provide law enforcement agencies with research-based information they can use to effectively utilize mediums…”

Educational Opportunities in Parapsychology

Excerpt:

“...There are currently a number of distance learning opportunities in parapsychology around the world in which any‐one with an interest can participate. We got all the details right from the educators’ mouths...”

By Mark Boccuzzi:

Research Grants: More than just Funding

Excerpt:

“...Anyone can perform research, but receiving research awards adds a subjective measure of the importance of the projects. Receiving these awards means that the studies being conducted by Windbridge Institute researchers are answering important and relevant questions and are being conducted using scientifically rigorous methods...”

The Power of Actions

Excerpt:

“…Here at the Windbridge Institute, we try to remember that ‘thoughts are things’ and we truly believe that the in‐tentions that are sent out into the world do, in fact, make a difference. My concern is that people may be substituting intentions for actions. It‘s easy to sit at a computer and take part in some grand, group intention to clean up the envi‐ronment, but it involves effort to actively take steps to make sure you are minimizing your environmental impact… We hope that you… can take pride in supporting an organization that intentionally implements positive actions... to limit its environmental impact. Positive intentions are good, but positive actions are even better.”

Has your Sign Changed? The Zodiac Explained

Excerpt:

“’…In January, Parke Kunkle, an astronomy professor at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, made an an‐

nouncement that the zodiac is wrong and that there is a new sign. The media went crazy with this and I am still an-

swering questions about this daily.’ To explain what's going on, Dave discussed the precession of the equinoxes and

looked at Mercury---the planet of communication, mental process, how you use your mind, thinking, and mental inter-

ests---in Dr. Julie Beischel's chart…”

Title: The V.I.S.T.A. (Validating Independent Surveys of The Afterlife) Project

Status: In Progress

Funded by: Forever Family Foundation (FFF)

Description: This study asks the question “What is the afterlife like?” Individuals interested in supporting this re‐search study can make tax-deductible donations to FFF earmarked for “the VISTA Project.” See the FFF website for more information about how to make contributions online or by mail.

Title: The Open Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC) Project

Status: In Progress

Funded by: Windbridge Institute Members

Description: The goals of this ongoing research and development project are (1) to evaluate methods of capturing ITC under highly controlled conditions and (2) to develop new applications for ITC. The outcome of this project will be an Open Source ITC appliance.

Title: Anomalous Information Reception (AIR) II

Status: In Progress

Funded by: Portions of this study have been funded by Peter Hayes, the Bial Foundation, and Windbridge Institute Members.

Description: This study collects evidence during quintuple-blinded readings regarding Windbridge Certified Re-search Mediums' reception and reporting of accurate and specific information about discarnates in the absence of any feedback; without prior knowledge about the discarnates (beyond their first names) or about the living sitters associated with them; and without using deception, fraud, or cold-reading. It is an extension of a previously pub-lished study involving claimant mediums and triple-blind readings.

Title: Empirical Investigations of Psi-Mediated Experimenter Effects

Status: In Progress

Funded by: Windbridge Institute Members

Description: When designing experimental methodologies and analyzing study results, it is important to keep in mind the potential impact of the experimenter's consciousness. These effects may result from conscious intention or subconscious desire (the latter of which may oppose the former). This study aims to explore the methods and outcomes from different experiments varying in experimenter belief, desire, and intention.

2012 Events, Conferences, and Meetings

There are several conferences we are planning to attend in 2012.

Featured Event: Toward a Science of Consciousness (TSC) April 9-14, 2012 Tucson, Arizona, USA

On Monday, April 9th, Windbridge Institute co-founders Julie Beischel and Mark Boccuzzi will be presenting a pre-conference workshop from 9am to 1pm (fee: $50) titled “The survival of con-sciousness after death hypothesis: Implications and applications.”

They will discuss the results from their mediumship and instru-mental transcommunication (ITC) research and the implications for our understanding of the nature of consciousness, socially relevant areas such as criminal investigations and grief counseling and re-covery, and the practical applications for ITC.

The experiential portions of the workshop will include a live dem-onstration of anomalous information reception by one or more WCRMs and the attendees using ITC software to attempt to ac-quire nonlocal, veridical information.

Tucson is beautiful in April. Make a trip of it! For more information and to register, visit the TSC site.

9th Bial Foundation Symposium March 28-31, 2012 Casa do Médico, Porto, Portugal

“The 9th Symposium ‘Behind and Beyond the Brain’ is dedicated to the theme ‘Sleep and Dreams,’ a topic with many facets that will be discussed by world-renowned experts in light of the latest research.

This conference also includes reports from research fellows about the results of their Bial Foundation-funded stud-ies. On March 30th, Windbridge Institute Adjunct Research Fellow Adam Rock, PhD, will be presenting Windbridge Institute project results.

About the Windbridge Institute

The Windbridge Institute for Applied Research in Human Potential is an independent research organization consisting of a community of scientists of varied backgrounds, specialties, and interests inves-tigating the capabilities of our bodies, minds, and spirits and at-tempting to determine how that information can best serve all liv-ing things.

Members of our international Scientific Advisory Board review re-search questions and protocols and provide feedback and sugges-tions based on their expertise.

At this time, the Windbridge Institute is primarily interested in re-search regarding the survival of consciousness hypothesis; that is, the theory that an individual's consciousness or personality contin-ues to exist, separate from the body, after physical death. We are also interested in traditional parapsychological topics (i.e., telepa-thy, precognition, clairvoyance, and mind-matter interactions); ani-mal consciousness, animal psi, and the human-animal bond; ap-plied intuition and intention; and complementary and alternative therapies for personal and planetary health as well as our connec-tion to each other and the potential that exists within each of us.

Why Windbridge?

Why is the existence of the Windbridge Institute important? Let us convince you. We are... Innovative: We study topics like life after death, mediumship, haunt-related phenomena, and animal psi which are considered “outside” of mainstream science (to say the least). We are interested in non-local consciousness, understanding our connec-tion to each other, and unlocking the potential that exists within each of us. Efficient: We keep our overhead low and have no marketing department, editorial staff, development department, administra-tive staff, or public facilities. Around here, a little support goes a long way for research. Far Reaching: We perform both basic and applied research. We are dedicated to understanding the true nature of the phe-nomena we study and then applying what we have learned to solve real-world problems by developing new training methods, treatment modalities, and technologies. Unique: We are one of the only organizations in the world performing world-class, peer-reviewed scientific research regarding life after death and the only one that includes an elite group of certified mediums as part of the research team. If we can't do this research, who will? Independent: We have no endowments, receive no state or federal funding, and have no university affiliations. While this situation sometimes makes us feel like we are out here on our own, it also gives us the flexibility to ask whatever research ques-tions we feel are important and to follow the data, wherever it might lead. Effective: In just four short years, we have published articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Parapsychology, Australian Journal of Parapsychology, Transpersonal Psychology Review, and Journal of Scientific Exploration and have pre-sented research at the Toward a Science of Consciousness conference and scientific meetings of the Society for Scientific Explo-ration, the Parapsychological Association, the Rhine Research Center, the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine, the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness, Atlantic University, and the Institute of Noetic Sci-ences. Open: When our studies are complete, we actively get the results into the world as quickly as we can -- regardless of whether the results are positive or negative. We post our findings and methods on our public website, our blogs, through social media, and in our e-newsletter (with members-only “In Plain English” translations). Connected: Our international Scientific Advisory Board includes 18 researchers, authors, editors, and experts in their fields; we are members of several professional organizations; and we perform collaborative research with other institutions. Respected: Here is what others have said about the Institute and our work...

“Beischel herself has played a major role in strengthening the methods used in this field and her research exemplifies her rigor and sophistication.” Daryl Bem, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Cornell University “The research that takes place at the Windbridge Institute has been judged by international peers to be important and reflects the Institute's commitment to conducting world-class science.” Dean Radin, PhD, Senior Scientist, Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) “At a time when there are precious few remaining research centers investigating non-local consciousness and its implications of survival, the Windbridge Institute serves as a beacon for future discovery.” Robert Ginsberg, Vice-President, Forever Family Foundation
