1 PLEASE ENJOY YOUR COFFEE OUTSIDE OF THE SANCTUARY.

Welcome to Independent Presbyterian Church! As a fellowship of believers, we like to know all who are worshipping with us today, so please fill out the Friendship Pad and pass it down the aisle. If you are a visitor, thank you for joining us. Any questions about our church? We encourage you to ask a member on your aisle, an usher, or a minister for help. They can answer your questions or assist you in finding someone who can.

More opportunities for teaching and fellowship at IPC are listed in the back of this bulletin. Visitors interested in joining IPC are invited to attend our next Pathway Class for Prospective Members, November 4, 11, 18, and 25, during Sunday School. For more information or to register, please contact Tameria Rackley, (901) 685-8206, or [email protected].

Our Sunday morning Worship Services are shown via live stream in the Chapel for families with babies/young children, latecomers, or any other reason you might be more comfortable there. Additionally, a fully-staffed nursery is available during all services.

We also live stream our 8:30 and 11:00 services at ipcmemphis.org. Please note: the link will be active only on Sunday morning. In addition, audio recordings of this morning’s sermon are available in the bookstore immediately following the 8:30 worship service, or during the following week on our website.

Please see an usher if you need a hearing amplification device.

First Word for WorshipAs we come to this text today, we are reminded that central to Mark’s account —and indeed, to all the other Gospel writers — are the final days of Jesus. Everything that happens during this final week is significant and filled with meaning. And surely, Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the praises of the people, the attribution of the Davidic kingdom to Jesus — all suggest that this is the King coming to his people in fulfillment of all that the Old Testament had promised. Yet the scene with Bartimaeus lingers for us — are we blind? Do we have insight and faith to see Jesus as he actually is — the Son of God, the Messiah, our true King?

Our worship service this morning takes its cues from traditional texts tied to Palm Sunday. Our call to worship combines key Old Testament texts — Psalms 24 and 118 and Zechariah 9 — which point us to the coming of our King. Our hymns also situate us in the story of Palm Sunday and encourage us to see Christ as our true King. As this message of Christ’s Lordship goes forth, we are pleased to hear a testimony of grace from Rev. Paul Hahn, the national coordinator for Mission to North America, the domestic missions arm of our denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America. We are thankful for God’s work in shaping us for his mission, to serve as new people for a new Memphis for his glory!

The Welcome and Announcements

The Meditation “Intrada Festiva” Wood

Jennifer Velázquez, Organist

The Call to Worship Psalm 118:26; Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 24:7, 10

The Minister: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

The Congregation: Hosanna in the highest!

The Minister: Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!

The Congregation: Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The Minister: Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory?

The Congregation: The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle! The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!

The Minister: Amen! Let us worship God!

The Reverend Brad Robson, Assistant Pastor (8:30 a.m.) The Reverend J. Edward Norton, Associate Pastor (11:00 a.m.)

The Processional Hymn “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” No. 235

The Assurance of Pardon Hear the good news! God’s Word says, “O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever. Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. I shall not die, but I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord.” Thanks be to God for his freedom and salvation that comes through Jesus Christ our Lord! — Psalm 118:4-5, 14, 17

The Corporate Confession of Sin O King of glory, we confess that our praise of your majesty has often been faint, our performance as citizens of your kingdom treasonous. For we have surrendered to the enemy by our secret and our known sins. For our treason you died, King Jesus. For our restoration, you rose again. Draw us closer to you by your Spirit, that our eyes may see you as you are, and our hearts might be captured by the wonder of your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Please sign and pass the Friendship Pad at this time.

The Ascription of Praise “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates!” Truro

Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates! Behold, the King of glory waits; The King of kings is drawing near, the Savior of the world is here.

Redeemer, come! I open wide my heart to thee; here, Lord, abide!Let me thy inner presence feel; thy grace and love in me reveal.

The Prayer of Intercession and The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Statement of Faith Westminster Larger Catechism Q and A 45

The Minister: How does Christ execute the office of a king?

The Congregation: Christ executes the office of a king, in calling out of the world a people to himself, and giving them officers, laws, and censures, by which he visibly governs them; in bestowing saving grace upon his elect, rewarding their obedience, and correcting them for their sins, preserving and supporting them under all their temptations and sufferings, restraining and overcoming all their enemies, and powerfully ordering all things for his own glory, and their good; and also in taking vengeance on the rest, who know not God, and obey not the gospel.

Evening Praise

Call to Worship Psalm 126 (as translated by Calvin Seerveld)

Minister: When the Lord brought back those of Zion left over from captivity, why we were like people in a dream — mouth filling up with laughter, bubbling over happily in speech.

Congregation: Then even the unbelievers were saying, “The Lord has done great things for them!” Yes, the Lord has done great things with us. That is why we are so glad.

Minister: Lord, please turn around to good our unexpected return, just as you let loose the swollen streams in the South. For those who sow in tears shall reap with joy.

All: Whoever goes out crying, goes out carrying life seed, will come back — no doubt about it — come back triumphantly carrying bundles of grain. Amen! Let us worship God!
