PRESIDENT’S REPORT

We can now look back on an eventful and exciting six months since the publication of our last NEWS. The World Individual Championships in Paris during May, followed by the European Veterans Championships in Bremen only one week later, were truly memorable tournaments for players, offi-cials and fans alike. In this edition, you find reports from those marvellous events, including the Minutes from the AGM of the Swaythling Club International held in Paris.

Please do take note of the top events in the table tennis season that has just started – with highlights in Schwechat/AUT, Tokyo/JPN and Auckland/NZL. Courtesy of the organising Associations, altogether 23 of our members will be invited to attend those Championships, receiving free hospitality for the duration of the event.

We would also like to draw your attention to the Country Corner Section with information from several National sections of our club.

Last but not least, may I thank all members who entrusted me to lead the SCI through the next two years. The example given by my predecessors, upholding the principles of our club – friendship and fairness – will be a serious obligation and challenge for me.

Have a successful and enjoyable season!

Best wishes,

Eberhard Schöler President SCI

RICHARD BERGMANNSCI Fair Play Trophy

SWAYTHLING CLUB INTERNATIONAL

At the LIEBHERR World Individual Championships in Pa-ris, France on 19th May 2013, Vladimir Samsonov (left) from Belarus was presented with the Richard Bergmann Fair Play Trophy by Milan Orlowski (right), SCI Director for Public Relations.

Disappointment in defeat, losing a closely fought seven games duel against Japan’s Kenta Matsudeira but as al-ways the behaviour of Vladimir Samsonov was impec-cable.

Please note:

Many of our S.C.I National Representatives regularly send us photo-graphs and articles from their section which assists us enormously to publish and print an up-dated and interesting edition. Please do conti-nue with this most necessary and integral part of our NEWS.

For memory: The award was first presented in Stockholm 1967 to Sweden’s late Kjell Johansson. It is made to a player who displayed the true credentials of sportsmanship at World Championships and keeps alive the name of one of the leg-ends of our sport, Richard Berg-mann.Born in Vienna on the 10th of April 1919, Richard Bergmann competed in 13 World Champi-onships; he made his debut in Prague 1936 and bid farewell in Stockholm 1957. Sadly, he pas-sed away on the 5th of April, 1970.Overall he won 22 medals at World Championships during his career – among them 4 Men’s Singles Titles (1938, 1939, 1948 and 1950). Had it not been for the cessation of sport during the period of the Second World War, it might well have been more; it is that conflict which necessi-tated Richard Bergmann’s move from Austria to England.

3. PRESIDENT`S REPORTThe President informed the assembly of those members who had passed away during the past year: Premysl Fulin (Czech Republic), Helen Hamilton nee Elliot (Scotland), Berti Pingel-Capellmann (Germany), Marty Reisman (USA), Ken Stanley (England) and Zhuang Zedong (China). Their obituaries were published in the SCI News No. 94, March 2013. In addition, she stated the Club had lost their long term members Jeanne Delay from France and Tony Brooks from England, the former secre-tary of the ITTF. Unfortunately, she received the information that they had passed away too late to mention it in the last News. Diane added that only a few days ago, here in Paris, they had been informed that Ernest Demetrovic (Slovakia) had recently died.Diane then asked the assembly to stand for a minute’s silence in order to honour those mem-bers who had passed away.

World Individual Championships 2013 in ParisDiane thanked the French Table Tennis Federa-tion for very generously inviting 5 SCI members to attend the event in Paris, offering free hos-pitality for the duration of the championships, which she stated they sincerely appreciated.

Junior AwardsDiane advised members that during the finals of the World Junior Championships in Hyderabad/India last December, the SCI trophy “Fairness, Friendship, Peace” was presented to Bruna Alex-

andre (Brazil) and Jang Woojin (Korea Republic) for their impeccable behaviour in the tourna-ment, hereby successfully promoting the princi-ples to the young generation of table tennis play-ers.

Richard Bergmann “Fair Play” TrophyDiane informed members that the above men-tioned award would be presented in Paris at the end of the championships, on the proposal of the referees and umpires. She added that The Victor Barna “Best Player” Trophy would be presented next year in Tokyo, during the World Team Championships.Diane continued that during the past months, the WVC Committee were busy with organi-sational details for the prestigious event to be held next year 2014 in Auckland, New Zealand. A meeting with representatives of the organising association, she continued, would take place in Bremen/Germany during the European Veterans Championships at the end of May 2013. Also an update on the event in 2016 in Alicante/Elche Spain would be given to the Executive by the Spanish organisers during the Championships in Bremen. She stated that Hans Westling would give members a short report about the situation later during the meeting. Diane advised the assembly that the “Terms of Reference” for the ITTF Veterans Committee had been newly drafted. The ITTF Board of Directors would discuss the proposal the following day in order to make a decision.Diane commented that the NEWS had always been hard work and she requested any interest-

ing articles and photos from members, regard-ing current affairs and historic elements, which would be of considerable assistance to her. The NEWS, she stated, was also available on the SCI homepage, which was part of the ITTF Web-site, thanks to the help of the ITTF. Diane fur-ther stated that within the Executive Committee, they would be discussing possibilities to improve this section. She was confident that this could be achieved in the next two years, with the help of members from the respective sub-committee “Press and Publicity”.Diane continued that in the last News, she was able to report 24 new members from 9 associa-tions. In the meantime, she stated, an addition-al 37 members from different associations had joined the Club, which was most encouraging. She hoped that the efforts in the coming year would also have positive results! She advised the Assembly that a lot of work was achieved in the past year. She sincerely thanked Gloria Wagener, Johnny Leach, Werner Schnyder, Hans Westling and all Directors for their contribu-tions. In this respect, she informed members that Directors Teri and Laci Földy, Press and Publicity, together with Tim Boggan, Director of Sponsor-ship and Advertising, were no longer continuing. The Executive Committee had decided to honour all three with a silver bat, engraved “In apprecia-tion”.The President went on to mention that as she had announced two years ago, at the AGM in Rotterdam/Netherlands, she would be retiring from the position of SCI President in Paris. She told the Assembly that it had given her great

pleasure assisting members of the SCI, how-ever, she continued, it was now time to leave! The President informed members that after the meeting, there would be a short get-together in the same area with snacks and a drink or two. She hoped many would join her.

a) Adoption of ReportThe President`s report was agreed and adopted.

4. TREASURER´S REPORTThe Treasurer, Werner Schnyder, commented on the financial outcome of the years 2011 and 2012.

Subscriptions:He advised members that subscriptions were paid fairly well on time, but it had to be point-ed out however, that a considerable number of countries did not respond to invoices or remind-ers, even though the Club was interested in pro-viding assistance to members who have health or financial problems. He continued that an increasing number of mem-bers had taken advantage of the one year rebate when paying the membership fee for 5 years in advance.

Assistance and SupportWerner informed the assembly that the Swayth-ling Club was always anxious to help as many members as possible to get free accommoda-tion on the occasion of international Table Ten-nis events and that during this fiscal period the Club had been able to provide financial help to a number of Swaythling Club members.

SWAYTHLING CLUB INTERNATIONAL

Profit and Loss statementWerner advised members that a consolidated profit of CHF 35.354,89 had been achieved dur-ing the 2 year fiscal period. He said this had been mainly due to the following facts:A number of countries had paid their member-ship fees for 5 years in advance and the Veter-ans World Championships in Stockholm, Swe-den contributed considerably to this profit. His thanks went to Butterfly and Tibhar, the Club`s sponsors, whose generous contribution reduced the high cost of the SCI Magazine. On the other hand, he stated, it had to be pointed out, that the overall cost of the Swaythling Club International due to its commitments such as booklet printing, the twice yearly SCI Magazine, and donations to members who need help, exceeded the income of the membership fees.

Current AssetsWerner advised members that the assets of the Swaythling Club International had increased from CHF 248.029,21 up to 283.384,10. With this amount the Treasurer was confident to be able to ensure all future activities and responsi-bilities towards the Club`s members and friends.

WVCThis event Werner stated, organised under the responsibility of SCI, had become an extremely important and popular championship and was not only from a sporting point of view, but also a financial topic to secure and cover all the nec-essary expenditures, such as future Presenta-tions for WVC organisers, office overheads, WVC Committee meetings, and when necessary travel expenses for the WVC. He again stated that the event 2012 in Sweden had been a big success thus meeting its WVC budget and brought a con-tribution to the profit. Werner added that he felt sure the WVC Championships to be held in New Zealand in 2014 would be a spectacular event and a well organised tournament, hopefully at-tracting a high number of players. Outlook 2013/2014Werner informed members that with a good en-try of participants at the WVC Championships in New Zealand and an improved income of the membership fees, his prognoses was a positive

financial result at the end of the next fiscal pe-riod in 2014 for the WVC and SCI.The Treasurer commented that he was at their disposal for any further questions they may have and he closed his report with many thanks to his colleagues of the Executive Committee and ex-pressed his sincere and special gratitude to the President, Diane Schöler for doing such a great job.Werner thanked the assembly for their attention.

a) Adoption of ReportReport was agreed and adopted.

6. AUDITORS REPORTThe Auditor`s Report for the fiscal years January 1st 2011 until December 31st 2012 dated 4th May 2013 and signed by Mr. Laszlo Pal and Trix Luterbacher, stated they had in their capacity as auditors for the Swaythling Club International audited the books on May 4th 2013 for the fi-nancial period 2011 - 2012. All records for the mentioned period were available to them for au-dit. Werner Schnyder, Treasurer of the Swayth-ling Club International, who was responsible for the accounting, supplied all the information they had requested.Spot checks of the most important income and expenditures convinced the auditors that the records were in order and the books clearly ar-ranged and kept correctly and with due care. Moreover they had verified all the different bank accounts and the balances. The balance sheet as per December 31st 2012 showed a consolidated profit of the Swaythling

APPOINTMENT OF AUDITORSIt was agreed by the assembly to appoint Mr. Las-zlo Pal and Mrs Trix Luterbacher as auditors for a further two years.

fact, he said, there were considerably more, 3.350 participants, 133 tables and a record entry of 66 countries. He added that 35 Swaythling Club members took part and some spectacular matches were played. He mentioned that 50 participants took part in the over 85`s, which included a 100 year old Rus-sian player. Hans advised members that the championship was a well organised event with a very friendly atmosphere and that the WVC Committee had had a positive feedback. This was immediately confirmed by several members of the assembly. A reception for SCI members, Hans stated, was held on the day of the finals.Hans went on to mention the next WVC in New Zealand which is to take place on the 12th -17th May 2014, after the World Team Championships in Tokyo next year. Hans advised members that during the European Veterans Championships next week in Bremen the WVC Committee will be meeting the New Zealand organisers to discuss further details. a) Adoption of Report Report was agreed and adopted

13. ANY OTHER BUSINESSChristian Heyerdahl mentioned that he felt all addresses should be put on the internet, as it would be easier to contact members and change addresses.Eberhard Schöler explained that this had been on the agenda before and he had, therefore, sort legal advice and was subsequently informed that it was apparently impossible to have addresses and e-mails displayed on the internet. However, he added, the Executive would look into this again to see if something can be arranged. The new President reported that the SCI de-pended on its National Representatives to man-age their national sections. He mentioned that several countries through their National Repre-sentatives had managed to rearrange their sec-tions such as Luxemburg, Slovakia and the Italian section. Zefferino Mancini`s efforts for the Ital-ian section had improved the number of mem-bers from 8 to 36. He felt this was quite positive. Eberhard said it was also important to meet at National Championships and to help and under-stand each other. Alan Ransome thanked Diane for the amount and quality of work she had achieved for the SCI and wished her every success for the future.Alan went on to advise the assembly that the museum would be moving to China and would therefore, not be stationed in Europe anymore. He wished to know if other members had any

views or ideas to keep part of the museum in Eu-rope.Hans Giesecke strongly seconded Alan`s com-ments. Koji Kamura stated that the decision was un-changeable. Radivoji Hudetz mentioned that this was purely a financial decision to cover the costs of the museum.Hans Gäb stated he saw some political involve-ment in this respect regarding Adham Sharara and Stefano Bosi.Eberhard added that he would contact, on be-half of the Swaythling Club, the ITTF in order to obtain some internet connection with the muse-um online on a regular basis. It was mentioned that some of the history was already listed under SCI/WVC on the website. Radivoji Hudetz informed members that there was now a museum in Koprivnica, Croatia exhib-iting Zarko Dolinar`s memorabilia, achievements and medals, which would be well worth seeing when visiting tournaments in Croatia and, he stated, if requested, he would be glad to arrange a trip to the museum. Zefferano Mancini thanked Diane for all her hard work. He explained that it was very difficult to obtain names and addresses of potential new members. Eberhard informed him that the Na-tional Association should be contacted in this respect. Zefferino also requested that if possible the SCI find a way to obtain tickets at a reduced rate for members at World Championships.Eberhard explained that there had been simi-lar requests in the past, but circumstances had changed; the National Associations are now con-nected to commercial companies, thus control-ling the financial aspect at major events. There were no more comments and the meeting was closed at 11.40 hrs.

Last June, the former Chief Executive of the Eng-lish Table Tennis Association and long standing SCI member, Richard Yule, was given a grand farewell at a surprise retirement party in Bounce, London. This fantastic occasion, arranged for weeks un-der great secrecy, included a host of colleagues (both old and new), players, officials, family and friends with whom Richard Yule was able to en-joy some nostalgia, re-acquaint himself with old friends and listen to accolades and recollections of his career. He started to play table tennis at the age of eight. Over the years, he won 8 Scottish National Men’s Singles titles, numerous Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles, won the Scottish Universi-ties title and a bronze medal in Men’ Singles at the Commonwealth Championships in Cardiff. He served Scotland with great distinction win-ning 285 caps, thus making him the most capped Scottish sports player of all time.

Richard Yule participated in 6 World Champion-ships, 7 European Championships and 6 Com-monwealth Games – in the process beating three England No. 1’s – Chester Barnes, Dennis Neale and Nicky Jarvis. He retired from National level play in 1985 and shortly after, in 1989, he was awarded Harry Bax-ter Award for services to Scottish Table Tennis. He then became a Scottish National Coach, a Na-tional Coach of Ireland and ran national training camps in Belgium. In 1985 he joined the Scottish Table Tennis Association as Director of Coaching & Development and ten years later he became CEO of the ETTA. Respect for Richard Yule is worldwide and the list of guests in London was impressive. 143 attend-ees at the retirement party included ITTF Presi-dent Adham Sharara, former Performance Direc-tor Michel Gadal, former English No. 1 Matthew Syed and famous English entertainer Michael Barrymore.

By invitation of the Italian SCI section, we visited Riva del Garda on the 28th and 29th June, situated on the North Shore of Lake Garda. During the Italian Championships in all age categories, held over a period of 9 days, approximately 2000 players gath-ered in this beautiful town. The venue was equipped with 48 tables and red flooring – perfect conditions! On Saturday, 29th of June, Zefferino Man-cini, our Italian SCI Representative, invited us for lunch with the SCI members present there, into a nice restaurant. We enjoyed the company of Francesco Bisi, Giovanni Bisi, Guido Bisi, Maurizio Errigo, Silvio Mag-ni, Zefferino Mancini and Rosario Troilo. We had also met Edith Santifaller-Huber in the venue, who had to go back to Bolzano, her home town, to compete in another tourna-ment!During the lunch, we were presented with a book on the history of the Italian Table

Tennis Federation, written in Italian language by Fabio Colombo and Giorgio Malisani – with 500 pages and over 450 photos of athletes, managers and personalities! DOWN MEMORY LANE   STELLAN BENTSSON (SWE)

The first World Singles Champion from Sweden. Surprise winner in Nagoya 1971, beating the de-fending Champion Shigeo Itoh from Japan (and the home crowd) in the final. Stellan was born in Falkenberg, on the west Coast of Sweden, on 26th July 1952. “I started to play table tennis at the age of eight; we played on an old sheet of plywood in the basement. We would play football one Sunday, then bandy (a kind of Icehockey) the next Sunday, then table tennis, and so on. I was always fascinated by a ball, and played and knew every ball game. However, I chose table tennis because I was small and not very strong. After I became ten years old, I used to play at least three-four games in the club, eve-ry day for four years. According to an unwritten rule of the club, the best could practice the long-est.”His first coach in the local club was Allan Dahl-gren. Torstensson was next, then Ogimura, Alser and Christer Johansson took over…Stellan has ten World Championships medals to his credit (3/1/6), plus thirteen medals at Europe-an Championships (7/4/2). He demonstrated his most mature and best game in the team events at the World Championships 1973 in Sarajevo. He was one class above all others as he accumulated 19 wins in straight games. The Swedes rejoiced in their first team victory, and extolled Stellan…as well as, of course, Kjell Johansson, Wikström, Bo Persson, Anders Johansson and coach Chris-ter Johansson. When one asked Stellan, in the ‘old days’, about his profession, he would reply: table tennis play-er. Today, he would say: table tennis coach. To-gether with his wife Angie Rosal, a former mem-ber of the US table tennis team, he now lives in San Diego/California.(Excerpt from “Legends of Table Tennis”, written by the late Zdenko Uzorinac)

Nicke years ago as General Secretary of the Swedish As-sociation - Photo by Swedish Association

Nils Bergström, born on Friday 7th March 1930, passed away on Friday 9th August 2013. He was 83 years old.In his role of a player, he represented Sweden at the World Championships in London 1948, play-ing alongside Bengt Nicander and Tore Palm; he was 18 years old at the time.Later when playing days were long over, he as-sumed official roles within the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). In July 1993 he was ap-pointed Acting President of the ETTU following the resignation of Hans Wilhelm Gäb; one year later at the European Championships in Birming-ham, he was elected President of the ETTU by acclamation. The vote of confidence in Nils Bergström is note-worthy. It was a time when the map of Europe was changing and a record of 48 Associations were present at the Assembly. He resigned from his position as President of the ETTU in 1997 in order to stand for office as a member of the ITTF Executive Committee; he was duly elected ITTF Vice President at the World Championships in Manchester. He remained a valued member of the ITTF Ex-ecutive Committee until 2005 when, at the elec-tions held at the Volkswagen 48th World Cham-pionships in Shanghai, he did not stand for office.

Immediately he was appointed a member of the ITTF President’s Advisory Council.During his long and distinguished career in the sport of table tennis he attended well over 40 World Championships since first appearing in London 1948. Furthermore his career spans the generations of legendary Swedish players who achieved the greatest heights; his table tennis life was the dynasty of his country’s greatest ta-ble tennis triumphs. He played in the era of the likes of Tage Flisberg and Tony Larsson in the 1950s, then applauded the success of Hans Alser and Kjell Johansson a decade later. In the 1970s, he delighted in the achievements of Stellan Bentsson; then he rev-elled in the era of Ulf Carlsson, Mikhael Appel-gren, Erik Lindh and Thomas von Scheele. Most recently the trio of Peter Karlsson, Jörgen Pers-son plus the one and only Jan-Ove Waldner made Nils Bergström proud to be Swedish. It was always a pleasure to reminisce with Nils Bergström, his dry sense of humour combined with a genial smile is the lasting memory.Sadly he has departed but that smile, that gra-cious personality lasts in our minds for ever.

Last April, our long standing member Tord Öst-ner sadly passed away. He was almost 90 years old, born in October 1923. Tord lived all his life in Stockholm and became involved in table tennis at a very early age – both as a player and an official. He was a member of the Executive Board in the Swedish Association from 1953 to 1979 and acted as the Associa-tion’s most appreciated Treasurer from 1958 for a record long 22 years. He was still playing table tennis actively until a few years ago and became Swedish Champion in 2005 and Scandinavian Champion in 2006.He will be sadly missed.

Peggy McLean (later Foulke), one of the U.S.A.’s most successful players at home and abroad, has died.By 1940, as a thirteen year old, she was playing seriously at Herwald Lawrence’s fabled Broad-way Courts in New York City and was coached by four time U.S. Champ Lou Pagliaro whom Dick Miles thought the best U.S. player ever.Later, during her international career, when her game had matured, she had a remarkable per-formance at the World Championships in Stock-holm 1949, beating – among others – the de-fending World Women’s Singles Champion Gizi Farkas in the Team Events. The U.S. Team over-came Czechoslovakia and Hungary, then in the fi-nal beat England to give the U.S.A. for the second and last time the Corbillon Cup. Bravo! At an English Open, a local reporter gave her “take” on McLean:

IN MEMORIAM   PEGGY McLEAN (USA)

“She has a dry sense of humour, an insatiable cu-riosity regarding English ideas and methods, and in order to acquire the correct slant on English life perused the London Times with great inter-est during her stay in London. She is 22, but looks 16, has a loveable elfin face, and the most beau-tiful teeth you ever saw – I can’t help feeling that a certain firm of toothpaste manufacturers, well known for their pun adverts missed a wonderful opportunity there, especially in view of the fact that English aficionado Ron Crayden will actually write her name as McClean.”Her play was very spotty over the remaining competitive years – she’d taken time out to raise a family and secure a Master’s degree in Educa-tion.We will remember her.

PING! TABLE TENNISThere has been a great deal of activity in Eng-land with regard to the Ping! Campaign and the Ping! Care programme which follows up the Brit-doc movie made at the World Veterans Champi-onships in Hohhot/China 2010. The campaign is gathering some momentum – and there was a very interesting piece on one of the English TV stations, Channel 4, last August. The film explains that Table Tennis has the poten-tial to be helpful for older people with illnesses, “in particular with dementia because it combines physical activity with spatial skills, cognition and keeping social” (Doctor Matthew Kempton from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College Lon-don).
