As the past manager of several grocery stores and a current Small Business Development Counselor ... I have thought about the store in Mosier issue a lot. What I would like to see is something closer to what Dickey's is in Bingen, but I don't know if we

have the population to support it. Something that combines good quality, fresh and

packaged food with some hardware and farm supplies would be really nice for a wide range of people. A small deli with espresso and sandwiches might help to support it also.

Another small country store that I have always liked going to in the past is in Mazma, WA.

future in the way of a store, I do appreciate the hard work and long hours that our current store owners put in....” Anonymous

The above comments reflect most comments we’ve heard. We need our basic needs met for good, fresh food in an inviting atmosphere, gifts for locals and tourists and a variety of interesting and basic wares, specialty foods and good cheeses and breads. Of course Mosier proprietors have carried these items and have been disappointed with local turn-out so part of the formula has to be local support as a large part

of this on-going puzzle. Location, atmosphere, variety, quality, customer service, all need to come together in our little town.

Get Engaged [in Mosier]Get Engaged!By Hollie Lund

If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to participate in the creation of a long-term vision for Mosier and the Gorge, then February is your lucky month! There’s a lot going on, so find the

at the East end of the North Cascade Highway. Mazma is a very small town with a lot of summer residences around it. In the winter it is at the end of the road since the highway is closed from December to March, April or May sometime. They have a good mix of home made and packaged foods along with some clothing and gift items for the tourists and a nice coffee bar that has some baked goods. I always like going there because it draws a nice cross section of locals and tourists and is a place you just want to sit around and watch the people at. I have also bought many clothing and gift items there because they always seem to have what I was looking for even though they didn't have much. They frequently have people playing music there at night too. What ever we might do in the

one that best aligns with your interests, or go crazy and commit to them all:

There will be a public hearing for the proposed Tanawashee Subdivision on February 6, at 7pm, in the Mosier Creek Terrace meeting room. If you’re new to Mosier or have never been to a Mosier City Council meeting, Mosier Creek Terrace is located on the east side of Mosier Creek. From downtown Mosier, follow the old highway east until you cross the creek; take the first right (at Kingdom St, just past the Mosier Creek Townhomes), and continue up that road until you hit a dead end. The meeting room is just on the other side of the double doors.

If you’re concerned about the proposal to allow development of a resort community in the National Scenic Area (just west of White Salmon)—or the implications that this decision might have for future development in the Scenic Area—there will be an all-day public hearing to discuss the proposed amendment to the Scenic Area Management Plan on February 12 in the Columbia Room of the Hood River Best Western Inn. For more information, visit www.gorgefriends.org. If you’re not able to attend the hearing, you can also express your opinion in a letter to the Gorge Commission. A web-based comment form can be found on the same website, under “Click here to take action.”

And to bring this exciting month to a close, the Gorge Commission is coming to Mosier! On February 28th, from 6pm to 8:30pm, the Gorge Commission will be holding a Columbia Gorge Future Forum at the Mosier Grange. Similar forums are being held in other communities throughout the Gorge, and each will follow the same basic agenda: “there will be a few short presentations but the main focus of the meeting will be a group discussion on values and visions for the Gorge’s future.” There will also be an open house from 5:30 to 6pm (just before the regular meeting) where you can view a highlights video from the original Gorge-wide meeting held last October at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. This is a great opportunity to have your voice heard at a regional scale!

There’s also a new group in town—MainStreet Mosier—dedicated to finding and promoting community-oriented and sustainable approaches to growing Mosier’s downtown (task number one, of course, will be to find our “main street”… is it the Old Highway? State Road, I mean Third Avenue? Or, uh, maybe even Main Street?). The group is still in its early stages, but as their activities progress there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved so keep reading your Mosier newsletter for updates! In the meantime, if you have any ideas or suggestions that you would like me to pass on to the group, feel free to email me directly ([email protected]).

VALENTINES DAY OK, you can’t ignore Valentine’s Day. Well, you can try if you are single, not dating, unattached, haven’t met anyone new in 6 months. Otherwise, you had better buck up and get into the mood. But get creative this year for your own sanity if nothing else. Of course you want to make your significant other pleased with whatever he/she would like so if that is dinner out, go ahead you’ll make a lot of local restaurants very happy as well but don’t stop there. Here are a few hopefully inspiring things you can do in addition to your hearts desire’s desire to make the day FUN. (By the way girls, only 6% of men receive gifts on Valentine’s Day yet 61% to 85% say they would like to get something for Valentine’s Day)

Hide that special something you’ve bought for your loved one. Hide it really well then starting from where it is hidden, create a treasure hunt of hints. For example, if it is hidden under the mattress of the guest room, figure out where you want to start, say, inside the morning paper IF your loved one ALWAYS opens the morning paper, or place it inside an envelope and have them open it at the appropriate time. The first clue may say: Roses are red, violets are blue go fry an egg for your first clue. Place the second clue in either the egg carton or fry pan. Then send them on to: “this clue is easy it doesn’t require math, you can get to it now if you want a nice bath.” and off you go. In the bath tub you can place a new bottle of bubble bath with the next clue taped to it. continuing to the final destination.

How about the 12 days of Valentine’s Day? Each day Feb. 3-14, give your loved one a small gift, wrapped in some special way. Cannon Packer has great gifts in The Dalles and what could be more romantic than a jar of Body Paint Chocolate complete with paint brush, yum, yum.

Give of yourself this year: A massage, a foot rub, a whole day out and about just you two, or how about a day away where you really talk about what is in your heart and how much the other person means to you? The gift of humor is always great, rent a funny movie, make popcorn, a special drink and laugh!

Tickets to something special would be great, there is wonderful theatre in the Gorge, great hotels, movies, entertainment shows, scan the newspaper, if all else fails, there is always Portland.

Go someplace and get take-out, set up candles, place setting, nice music and have a great evening at home.

Cook something yourself if you don’t usually do it. Call a local cook for advice if needed.

Invite another couple over, share a meal and rent a movie for the four of you to watch together.

Page 5: A N E W B U S I N E S S C O M I N G T O M O S I E R , B I

Involve the kids, gifts all around, favorite food, fun movie, special treat for dessert like a taffy pull or something, Share the love and have a wonderful February 14th. Alone, take yourself out of town to someplace you haven’t been before. Take a favorite book to read during dinner and really treat yourself to your favorite food, movie, hotel, dinner, whatever. You deserve and should enjoy your own company.

Get together with other singles and whoop it up, celebrate the day, being alive and future possibilities.

Perhaps the best thing you can do for yourself and someone else this day is to take valentines to a nursing home, drop off anonymous valentines to seniors, or just do something nice for someone else, pay forward on the bridge, anything to share good feelings.

Wanted: Fruit Ladders Running Fruit Ladders

Project Description

This is a traveling art installation consisting of 10 fruit ladders of different sizes and colors, which will be placed on properties near I-84. The ladders will be arranged to look as if they might be a string of runners. Seen in a serpentine line, the ladders will be out of their usual context of orchards and with their bright colors and cha-cha line formation will obviously not be in their usual working mode.

The element of surprise will play a large part in the success of the piece. After beginning in the area of Hood River and with the ladders spending three or four weeks at a particular location, the ladders will then be moved to a another location, several miles to the east. This progression will be repeated several times with no announcement as to where the ladders might appear next. The public will be riding along in their car on I-84 and suddenly, the installation will appear (and disappear some time later). The final number of individual installations is undetermined at this time but in the neighborhood of six or seven, with the installation finally reaching Maryhill Art Museum and possibly residing in the sculpture grounds there.

The title “Running Fruit Ladders pays homage to Christo’s “Running Fences” project in Marin County in the eighties. If you have a spare fruit ladder, please contact John Maher at 478-10171.

Benefits

Public awareness of the project would help promote the Fruit Growers of the region, through magazine and news articles. Arts in the Gorge would also be promoted through this project. Tourism agencies would be interested in partnering with this project for out of the region promotion. The public at large would benefit by engaging with the art without having to leave their cars or enter an art gallery.

10 SPEED COFFEE COMES TO TOWN

10 Speed Coffee owner Bryan McGeeney in partnership with Ben Zimmerman will be opening a second shop in Mosier early March. At the time we spoke, Ben and Bryan were still formulating specific plans but said they do plan on serving coffee, beer and food. Matthew Koerner will be remodeling the store (the former Fairy Dell Store) for 10 Speed. Mosier resident Jessica Gunesch will create art work and signs for the new establishment. The focus on the new business is coffee. 10 Speed is starting up its own roasting business soon in Hood River and sees the Mosier store as the show case for its own roasted coffee. The Moser location will have limitations on the type of

food they’ll serve due to kitchen limitations. At this point, what they serve will be within bounds of Wasco County Health and safety regulations. We’ll write up a more detailed description of the business in the March issue of MVN."
