For this project, an iOS app was developed as a multimedia guide for the National Gallery of Ireland. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that machine learning can be used to significantly enhance the user experience of visitors in art galleries and museums. The app uses image recognition technology to recognize paintings in the National Gallery and provide visitors with information, commentary, and navigational assistance. The app was conceived as a modern alternative to conventional museum audio guides. By taking advantage of the latest advances in machine learning technology and mobile computing it provides greater levels of enjoyment, convenience and education to museum visitors.

By meeting user demand for a museum guide with an intuitive visual interface, the project demonstrates the value of machine learning in enhancing the visitor experience in museums. User testing produced extremely positive results, with users finding the image recognition functionality to be a very intuitive way of accessing information about paintings.
