Nobles, Ladies, and Friends of El Jebel Shrine:

THE POTENTATE’S MESSAGE

It has been an honor to serve as your Potentate and I thank each of you for your support and help this year. I dedicated the year to my good friend Darrell Tygart. My theme for 2013 was “Living the Dream with El Jebel in 2013” The dream of a great fraternity full of fun, fellowship, playing hard and working hard for the hospitals. If you recall, after I was installed, I told you that 2013 would be about having fun and enjoying good fellowship with one another. With the assistance of Chief Aide Russ Wilson, and all of the Aides, events were held that gave all of us an opportunity to have a lot of fun. Debbie and I thank you for the opportunity you have given us, the outstanding support and the great memories, and allowing us to Live the Dream with El Jebel in 2013. We have many challenges and opportunities ahead of us. I am confident that Illustrious Sir Phil Hause, with the help and assistance of all Nobles, El Jebel and the 2014 Divan, will meet

these challenges and opportunities head-on and El Jebel will grow and prosper. The future is bright and the opportunities are limitless. I heard someone once sum up his time as the leader of an organization as being like a child anxiously looking forward to going to an amuse-ment park and riding all the rides and looking forward with great anticipation to riding the roller coaster. There are highs and lows. There are thrills, excitement and some scary times, but all-in-all it is fun. And, when the ride ends, it’s time to get off. The time I have spent on the Divan of El Jebel has had highs and lows, it has been thrilling and exciting and sometimes scary, but all-in-all it has been great fun. The ride has ended and it’s now time to get off. May God Bless you, May God Bless El Jebel, and may God Bless the USA.

Fraternally,Matt

The girl’s continued an 8 year Tradition of holding a “Trash Bash” event (always a youth fundraiser) and choos-ing the Shriners Hospital as the recipient. Unfortunately, Jamie Clinkingbeard (Grand Worthy Advisor) was unable to attend last night to present the check with Lilly Haas (Grand Bethel Honored Queen) and Liz Fellers (Miss Colo-rado Jobs Daughter). FEZ – HEADS UP, AGAIN!By George Moreno

On January first, we will have the new online version of the El Jebel Red Fez available to all Nobles and friends. The online PDF version will also be available. Starting in Febru-ary, we will no longer publish the online PDF version nor will we print the 24 page color version. The two big reasons we are publishing the new online version are to reduce expenses, and speed up the download of stories. The old, online PDF version is a very large single file. The new ver-sion will be a collection of smaller files for quicker down-loads. I have updated many of the unit logos to color versions of what was used in the past. If any unit would like a spe-cific new logo please email it to me or leave it in the office with Susan. The new version will have a table of contents so you may click to a specific page / article, or you may read the Red Fez from start to fin-ish. All units that have been regularly submitting reports for the Red Fez will be listed in alphabetical order in the table of contents. You may now include as many photos, video clips, and audio recordings as you would like. If you would like a printed copy sent to your home it will be a $15 annual subscription. The print version will be black and white, text only. I am open to any ideas Nobles may have to spruce up the communications. My email address is [email protected]

Moving the El Jebel Shrine Cir-cus to May should be a huge suc-cess in the quality of the Circus, acceptance of the venue by our patrons, and most importantly net revenues. Revenues that we need to operate our El Jebel Shrine Center as dues revenue is now less than half of our yearly budget. The Cir-cus Committee is working hard to improve on the success in several areas in 2014, but especially by cut-ting needless expense, re-designing our program advertising and to improve ticketing. Our ticketing this year will con-tinue with our Nobility and unit tickets the same as last year. The vouchers will be exchanged for an actual ticket for the particular per-formance you wish to attend. You will be able to make the exchange at the performance of the circus at the venue which is the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. Last year, just over one-third of our Nobles purchased any of

the Nobility tickets sent to them through the mail. Therefore, we will be sending Nobility vouchers to only those Nobles who have purchased tickets in the last three years. This will save us several dol-lars in expense for tickets that have just been thrown away. If you have not purchased tickets in that time frame, but would like to this year, please contact the Circus office and we will send you your Membership Book. Membership Books should be in the mail in March. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is for El Jebel to have a successful Circus. If we con-tinue to dip into our investment funds as we have done in recent years, then somewhere down the road, we will be in worse shape than what we are now. We need everyone to help make the Circus successful. Don’t forget the Cir-cus Kick-Off will be February 15, 2014.

What a Team!!!By Joel Roche

The Children’s Christmas party was a huge success. Mary Jane and I would like to thank everyone who helped make it so. A special thanks to Debbie and Matt Raia our Poten-tate, Tony and Ellen Dattilo, P.P., Joyce and Don Phelps, Pat and Jim Graves, Cathie and Don Weiser, Richard Talkington, Vic and Sharon Olson and Shirley Dietrick. Ernie Edwards for all the hot dogs and Mary Wittner for making all the delicious cookies. Our food servers, our game people, and the face paint-ing and tattoo ladies. Also the Band, Chanters, Radops, the Keystone Kops, Shrine Clowns, Directors Staff, and the Computer Club for all their hard work. Tony

was a great Santa as usual and his elf grand-daughters were adorable. When the party was over, every-one pitched in and the help we received took no time at all to clean up the lower ballroom. You all make a great team and Mary Jane and I hope we can get your help once again next December as we have volunteered to do it again for Phil and Christine. We also wish to thank the indi-vidual units that donated funds to help defray the cost to put on this year’s party. They were the Sports, Tanzers, The Legion Of Honor, Dragoman and the Daraja who were all most generous. This was the last Christmas Party for the children in our Beautiful Shrine Temple and we were thrilled that it was such a success. Thank you all again. Joel P. The early morning was all of ‘crisp’ when our little gathering of Nobles met for breakfast. We could only muster four brave souls on that frig-id day but the spirits of the Nobles more than made up for the lack of numbers. It is the season to be joy-ous for whatever reason or philoso-phy one might choose. In addition to our group, a young man was eating breakfast in the café, and when he asked about the familiar symbol on one of our members cap “That’s the square and compasses” we replied, almost in unison. He said his grand-father was a Mason and that he respected the organization even though he knew very little about it. We had a great conversation which ended when he said he would check out the Masons in his home town of Palisade. He went on his way and we conducted our meeting…which

at that time seemed almost inconse-quential in light of the fact that we just provided a young man with lots of positive Masonic information. What’s the point? Just maybe in due time, a young man will choose to join our ranks because of this short but meaningful interaction with four friendly Shrine Masons. Just maybe…one can only hope. The discussions around our breakfast table included dues pay-ments, input on the future building for the El Jebel Temple, and financial support for a local minister to visit the Holy Land next spring. There were no reports of sickness or dis-tress for which we were duly thank-ful. When the meeting adjourned, it had warmed up to a positive three degrees for which we were also thankful. As most of you know, our club meets for breakfast each month and we often bring our Masonic friends to join us. So, our standing invita-tion is offered to all Masons to meet with us on the second Monday of the month at the Sinclair Over-land Trail Café at the Atwood Exit #115 off I-76. We guarantee a hearty breakfast with lots of friendly Shri-ners.

Dick and Phyllis Knorr have a wed-ding anniversary in January. Mar-ried since 2003. Congratulations to them. The Shrine Children’s Christ-mas party held on December 14 was exceptional this year. My hat goes off to all those who made it possible. Our Christmas Party hosted by Virgil and Nancy Kipers was held at Mimi’s on December 21st. A good

time and much fel-lowship was had by all in attendance. Thirty + people. Our Janu-ary Mariners Meet-

ing will be at Café-del-Sol on the 9th at 6:00 pm.

Our annual Change of Watch will be at the Homestead Grill on January 18, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Our 2014 Bridge will be installed at this time. BRIDGE OFFICERS:Ken Johnson, CommodoreJim Ashley, Vice CommodoreRoger Barnes, Sec/TreasRichard Welle, Captain of the Deck

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! A NEW unit has formed at El Jebel. That is correct; a new unit has formed at El Jebel. What is it, you might ask? It is a social unit with parade privileges. The unit is pri-marily founded to be FUN and to WIN (aka Kick Everyone’s Tails) at competition. Does this sound interesting? What is the name of this new unit? The El Jebel Y.O.L.O. was founded because some of us realize that You Only Live Once and we need not spend our time and resources in a place that does not capitalize on the meaning of

this statement. The Phoenix of the miniature ’32 Ford Roadsters is rising from the ashes with new life. I would be remiss if I did not publically “Thank” the mem-bers of the El Jebel Rumble Bee’s for giving us so many materials, ideas, and financing to get started. The cars are currently being taken apart and re-built with fresh parts and liquids so that we can assure ourselves that we don’t need to be towed. The bodies are undergoing a renovation and I will keep this one a secret for now. We had a kick-off party in November which saw just under 30 attendees. Our next event will take us out to the National Western Stock Show to support our parent organiza-tion, the El Jebel Shriners and our Potentate-elect, Phil Hause. We look forward to seeing you all soon and getting our cars on the road. LOOK OUT El Jebel, the YOLO are loose!

Congratulations to Phil Hause and the other elected and appointed members of the Divan for the year 2014. It’s a bit of a matter of pride that once again we have a RADOP in the office of Potentate. It’s also plain to see that Phil isn’t just a card carrying RADOP. He always seems to have a radio with him at Shrine events, and also at Consistory reunions, where he always volunteers to be the radio contact for the Director General. Many thanks to Michael Mar-cus for working the kids Christ-mas Party. Michael interviews the kids before they meet Santa and radios the info to Santa (Tony Dat-

tilo), so Santa knows the child's names and wishes ahead of time. It’s a way to put ham radio to good use for the party. Thanks also to Emit Hurdelbrink for arranging the

RADOP Christmas party at Olive Garden. We had 16 in attendance and everyone seemed to be having a good time. A person appreciates good friends and fellowship at this time of the season. We had a surprise celebration at the Christmas party. It turns out it was the 30th wedding anniversary of Alan and Barbara Langfeldt. Congratulations to you two and many happy returns. Happiness is when QST, CQ, and the HRO catalog all arrive in the same mail delivery. It happened to me a couple of weeks ago. WOW, my cup runneth over. Hope you all had a great Holliday season.73, Sid

We look forward to an active year 2014, with the help of all Sandblaster members making it successful. Also, great weather along with a large num-ber of participants, which is what the game is all about. So get those clubs out of winter storage, cleaned and ready for that first outing, which will take place in Arizona at the Arizona Golf Resort in Mesa. If you need additional information contact Mike Hessel. The Sandblaster Christmas Party was enjoyed by all in attendance at the Pinehurst Country Club. The Sandblasters stand ready to help Illustrious Sir Phil and his 2014 Divan in any way we can during the El Jebel year. A closing thought that I received: It's a simple matter to keep your ball in the fairway if you're not choosy about which fairway. If profanity had any influence on the flight of a ball, most everyone would play bet-ter. The greatest sound in golf is the Whoosh, Whoosh, Whoosh, of your opponent's club as he hurls it across the fairway.

Nobles and Ladies, a friendly reminder to all, that the Shrine stated meetings continue in the month of January and that our Director’s Staff business meetings and work nights continue. A New Year – Let’s Keep Growing Chanters

By Nils Nordberg “Thank You” to all Chanters who participated in our performances in November and December – a parade, a Blue Lodge Installation, a Stated meeting with Memorial Service, and the Kids Christmas Party – a good variety of our sing-ing venues. Let’s keep up our good work of “Supporting Shrinedom Through Song.” At our December lunch and meeting we set the basis for a suc-cessful 2014, electing Virgil Kip-ers as President, Rodger Peabody

as V-P, and Nils Nordberg as Secretary-Treasurer. Our thanks go to Mona Eckley for her lovely brunch. We will have our new officers installed on Monday night, January 13, at the El Jebel stated meeting, following the installation of El Jebel officers. Wishbone Restaurant was our “inning” in November. It was wonderful, as we had expected. There were almost 20 couples present; it was good to see some of our long-time, past-very-active members joining us. We had a SHORT meeting, and then ate with gusto. One thing Roamers know how to do is EAT!

We have our annual Christmas Buffet Brunch in mid-December, this time at Mount Vernon Country Club. The weather in December is up and down, so

we never know about this moun-tain location; fortunately most of the snow is further up I-70. One of our winter dinner meetings was held on Lookout Mountain (Cody Inn) and it was a struggle to get there, not to mention the struggle getting home! We must be just a bunch of fair-weather-pedal-pushers, waiting for the hot

days of summer to return so we can “camp” out with our air con-ditioners… Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Marolyn Kent (and Jerry). She is battling cancer, undergoing chemo and radiation, and is having a bone marrow transplant from her twin (“a perfect match”). So we wish you well, Marolyn; know that every Roamer is thinking of you. We have a retraction about our last month’s article---our favorite camping area, Parrish Ranch will be available for next year! The September flood in the northern foothills did some damage to the

place, but the owners assured us that it will be upgraded and ready in time for our fall outing. The RV Roamers had a great year, under the Presidency of Jim & Pat Graves. There were prob-ably some crises, some last min-ute changes, a few glitches, but they were handled so smoothly nobody noticed. And to attest to the success of this unit, at the December Stated Meeting twelve Roamers including, President Jim Graves, presented two checks of $1,000 each to Matt Raia, Poten-tate, for the Shriners Hospital for Children and the Transportation Fund.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children byproviding pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals.Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible forcare and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.

If you weren’t able to attend the Daraja Christmas and Holiday Bash you sure missed a good time. This year it was a combined event with the VIPs. Over 70 nobles, ladies and invited guests converged on Simms Steakhouse on December 14 and enjoyed a wonderful meal arranged by President Paul Altimi-er and his lady Lynne. It was a great time to re-connect with old friends and make a couple of new ones.

Officers for 2014 were elected at the November business meeting. Next year’s officers are: President Bill Myers, 1st Vice President Ed Rendon, Secretary Mike Knight, Treasurer Don Kirby, Captain Scott Myers, Circus Chair Brett Hinds and Membership Chair Dennis Sputh. Thanks guys for stepping up. The last time our unit’s Consti-tution and By-Laws were updated was in 2000. A committee has been formed to update these documents to reflect the way the unit now operates. Paul Altimier, Don Kirby and Bill Myers will be working on the changes in the next few months. Proposed changes will be presented at a future unit meeting to be voted on. I will report on these changes in future articles. As we enter the New Year, remember that it is better to look ahead and prepare rather than look back and regret.

I hope everyone had a great Holi-day Season and will have a very Happy New Year. Congratulations to Phil Hause on being elected Illustrious Potentate for 2014. In addition, congratulations to all the Nobles elected and appointed to the 2014 Divan. The Keystone Kops look forward to working with you in 2014. By the time you read this, the Kop’s year will have wound down. The past year, 2013, was a very busy, fun filled year. Prez Roger extends his thanks for everyone’s support throughout the year. Although the officers normally receive most of the attention, they can only lead the entire team of Keystone Kops. Roger extends a big thanks to all the Kops and their Ladies for their hard work in 2013. We had a great Kop Christ-mas Luncheon at Mount Ver-non Country Club. There were a whole bunch of Kops, their Ladies, and their guests. This was

a joint endeavor, as we also had Aurora Shrine Club and Cad-Linc members, their Ladies and guests. All in all, this was a good Holiday Party. The Nobles, their Ladies, and guests provided great fellow-ship. Mt. Vernon provided the food, which was very good, as usual. Altogether, this made an outstanding Holiday Luncheon; Rich Silver deserves a big tip of the Fez for orchestrating such a great Holiday Outing. The Kops had another busy month in December. The Kops began the month by doing our own Holiday Party at Mount Ver-non Country Club. The next week-end we did the Electrical Workers Union Xmas Party at the I.B.E.W 68 Union Hall up on Logan. We took the Kop’s Jail and our smil-ing faces and did our thing for the kids and their parents. The fol-lowing week we did our Keystone Kop thing at the Shrine Center for the El Jebel Children’s Christmas Party. Several of us made it to the Shrine meeting to participate in the elections of the 2014 Shrine Officers. Finally, each of the Kops were able to kick back and enjoy our own Holiday plans. See you at the El Jebel Stat-ed Meeting January 13th for the installation of the Divan and the installation of the Unit Officers. Don’t forget the Kops meeting on January 14th.

Our December Christmas dinner meeting was held at Homestead Grill, with delicious choices of pork chop, sea bass, or chicken. They all looked so good; we wished we could have eaten them all! But with the upcoming holidays, we were glad we didn’t… At that event we honored our long-time members with free meals. Present for this recognition were: Jim Cram, Joe and Mary Keller, Wendell & Lois Martin, Lew & June Maxson, Marv & Joan Sellinghaus-en, and Marty Youngmann. Jeffco Shrine Club and their ladies joined us for our Christmas celebration. The entertainment was ter-rific---Gary Lee, with his digital

horn. He played a number of songs, including Christmas ones, in vari-ous instrument settings of trumpet, saxophone, etc. His computer sup-plied the background orchestra or band; it was a very professional touch! On January 7th Marty Young-mann will present his pictures of “Washington D.C. Monuments”. If you see this in the Red Fez (yes, we know it’s close) drop by for the pro-gram in the East Room. And be sure to be at the Feb-ruary meeting for an “end of an era” (El Jebel’s building), and the program: “Beginning of an era”---Drone-Helicopter-Photography”. As some of you may recall, the company, ”Leptron”, had two of their helicopters on display at the Honor Breakfast. The representa-tive explained some of the uses of their camera work (not just military or spying!) and the uses still pro-jected for the future. Tentative---the Optars might have an exciting February 4th program of an actual demonstration!

We kick off the 2014 Dance year

with the Serenade in Blues Band playing for us on January 24th. This will be the first time they will be playing for us and the leader of the Band; Bill Valentine is a Shriner. I hope you will all try to come out and support this dance and enjoy his music. If you are not receiving my emails about dance events at the Shrine, please call John Zeaphey on 303-0746-3774 or email John at [email protected]. Thank you all for your support of our dances and our Shrine.

Greetings Fellow Nobles,

Dale W. Stauss Public Relations Committee Chairman and Deputy Imperial Potentate

A FRATERNAL NEWSLETTER

November 2013

ThePublic

RelationsVoice

I’m very pleased to be able to say that we are making tremendous progress in both raising awareness and in providing needed resources to our members. Over the past two months, both our organizations have received increased media attention. In addition, Shriners International is providing our nobility with more education and resources that will help ensure success in increasing membership numbers.

On behalf of the leadership of Shriners International, I am extremely pleased to report that the annual Shriners International Membership Seminar was quite successful. Our keynote speakers did an excellent job in demonstrating how every noble has the ability to contribute to our goals of increasing and sustaining membership. A key section of the seminar focused on the importance of mentorship and “total participation” within our temples. It was an honor for Lady Cheryl and me to contribute to the seminar by presenting a workshop on “Shrine Mentoring” and the keys to new member retention. I would like to thank the office of membership development and all the nobles who participated in the seminar for a productive and positive meeting.

In keeping with our goal of emphasizing membership, we are launching a new magazine specifically for members of the Shriners fraternity. The magazine will highlight standout Shriners across the nobility, membership initiatives and best practices, valuable information on new programs, patient stories and news from around the health care system. The inaugural edition will be published

and distributed this December. Watch for it in your mailbox.

As part of our commitment to increasing public awareness, Kenneth Guidera, M.D., chief medical officer of Shriners Hospitals for Children®, was a guest on Shrine Time Radio earlier this month. This A.M.-radio program is sponsored by the New York City Mecca Shriners. The show, which airs the third Wednesday of each month, discusses a variety of topics, including our health care system’s expertise, the history of freemasonry and how one can join the Shriners fraternity.

To honor our veterans, Imperial Potentate John A. Cinotto traveled to Arlington National Cemetery in late October to pay tribute to the Tomb of the Unknowns. To honor our brothers and other brave men and women who have served in the armed forces, Imperial Sir Cinotto and officers of the Legions of Honor laid a commemorative wreath at the site. This time-honored tradition serves as a reminder of the debt of gratitude we owe to all who protect us and our freedoms every day.

I’m also pleased to see the national media noticing the work of our organizations. Two of our patients, Rion Page and Owen Mahan, patients of our Tampa and St. Louis Hospitals, respectively, have been featured on nationally televised programs. Rion, a country singer, is a finalist on The X-Factor and Owen had the opportunity to participate in the coin toss at the Notre Dame - Purdue football game.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open also received tremendous media support from the Golf Channel. In addition, the governor of Nevada designated the week of October 14-20, 2013, The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Week. During the event, national patient ambassadors Olivia Stamps and Brendon Wiseley did an outstanding job as our representatives, and had many memorable opportunities, including speaking on behalf of the health care system.

Let us emphasize the many good and positive things happening in both our fraternity and philanthropy – like the highlights shared here – and use them as opportunities to re-energize our nobility, and to interest potential new members. If we remain committed to membership development and work together, we can achieve our goals.

On behalf of Shriners International, the Imperial Divan, members of the Joint Boards and their ladies, Lady Cheryl and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Have a wonderful holiday.

The Dec, 10 meeting was started with lunch at 11:30 am in the Arab Patrol Room; lunch was provided by John Zeaphey. Following lunch, the meeting convened with 7 members and guests pres-ent. The Treasurer’s report and any correspondence received were read. Follow-ing was a discussion about the upcoming photo shoots at the Children’s Christmas party and the New Year’s Eve party. Duane Crapser, our Divan Rep, also reported on the happenings at El Jebel. After the business meet-ing, John Zeaphey polled the members present as to what programs should be present-ed at the future Club meet-ings. After much discussion, the following was decided: Feb-Updating inner bodies’ websites on the El Jebel web-

March-Advantag-es to multiple email accounts, how to email pictures, large files and more. April-What is the computer Cloud and how to benefit from it. May-Backing up your computer, what

WCSC BOARD MEETING was held on December 10th. The meeting was called to order by WCSC President Ted Herrman at 11:45 am. Invocation was given by Bob Magos. Chris Geisler led the Pledge of Allegiance. Hospital Coordinator Bob Emrich said there were four trips to Salt Lake City. To learn more about the services offered at Shri-ners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City, or to refer a patient, visit www.shrinershospitalsforchil-dren.org/SaltLakeCity or call 800-314-4283 or 801-536-3688. Christmas party held FRI-DAY, DECEMBER 6, 2013 was a big success. Thank you to Chris Geisler for putting this together. There was a White Elephant gift exchange and Ugliest Christmas Sweater Contest. Bill Brassette was selected as Shriner of the Year. John Green gave the presentation. Kevin Harvey was awarded his Jewel of El Jebel by WCSC Presi-dent Ted Herrman. Congratula-tions! Donna Fletcher spoke brief-ly about the Daughters of Nile and was asking for women interested in joining to contact her or Janine Briscoe. A great time was had by all. Daughters of the Nile: Daugh-ters of the Nile is an International fraternal organization for women 18 years or older, who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or Daughter of the Nile or is a majority member in Good Standing of a Masonic-related organization for girls. Each year the members of Daughters of the Nile give generously of their time and talents to the hospitals by providing more than 150,000 volunteer hours at the Shriners Hospitals for Children® In addi-

tion, they sew cloth-ing and quilts, and provide toys, books, games and other edu-cational and recre-ational items with an

annual, value well over $900,000. Clowns: Have been very active this past month. Entertaining at the Scottish Rite Children’s pancake breakfast with Santa on December 7th in Grand Junction and Satur-day December 14th in Montrose. Also both the Grand Junction and Fruita Christmas parade of lights. They had their election of offi-cers. Michael Thayer is President, Steve Thomas Vice President and Gary Brown Secretary / Treas. They meet the third Tuesday of the month, noon, at Red Canyon Grille at the Redlands Mesa Golf Course. Tee offs: Annual election of officers meeting was held on November 14th at Dos Hombres. Ted Herrman was elected Presi-dent, Doug Gaumer Vice Presi-dent and Jim Moore Secretary/ Treas. Tri-Co by Steve Thom-as: Hope everyone had a great holiday season. We had our election of officers at our November meeting at Ger-hard's Restaurant in Delta and elected Walt Wright as President, Steve Thomas as VP and seeing as Jack Seev-er wasn't there to defend himself we just appointed him as Sec. Treas. again this year. Melanie Fairlamb drew her own name for the Cash prize. She said she could use this for signing up for ACA. Guess what! Darrell Fisher won his door prize again. However this time he refused to accept it. I think it was getting a little worn by him pack-ing it back and forth to the meetings. So we redrew and Lady Linda Wright won this time. Congrats gal. Our January meeting

will be at the Stonehouse in Montrose on Jan. 25th at 1 pm. We are looking for a few good men, so if you think you qualify, just show up and we'll see what you got. Grumpy says: over-heard at the Christmas parade of lights: “I could sleep in heavenly sleep if it weren’t so cold”. Get Lucky: For anyone who got the $120 free adver-tising envelope in their Monday Sentinel paper if you fill it out and write in "Shriners", WCSC can use that for any advertising we want to do. Thanks. Sickness and distress: We lost two more mem-bers to the black camel: Phil Karly passed away on 11/30/13 and Chris Jouflas on12/12/13. Rest in peace brother nobles. Michael Thayer is your Red Fez reporter. Contact him at 970-210-4733 or email [email protected].

We invite you to join one of the warmest and rewarding inner-bodies of El Jebel Shrine, where our Nobles and their Ladies are committed to public awareness of our hospitals for children while having a great time together. What fun it is to ride in a one-horse miniature T-Noble car to spread the importance of our labors! Look what we did in 2013, and plan to do so again in 2014. The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Denver. This was the first parade for our new theme trailer. An electri-cal fire in one of our cars added to the excitement! Breakfast at Dozens and the Memorial Day Parade in Denver. The Johnstown Parade, where a rear bumper was pulled off one car while towing another. The Pine Grove Rhubarb Festival parade, where children enjoyed a photo-op with the cars, and we found out that we could start our cars with a push if the starter rope broke. The Salida FibArk parade with Al Kaly Shrine. Breakfast with the Lion’s Club and BBQ by the Shrine Club before the parade in Brush, one of our cars just making it to the end of the route as the brakes failed. The

Buffalo Bill Days Parade in Golden, where the Dune Buggies took home a trophy. The Lead-ville Boom Days Parade, along with the Shrine Band. The Wheat ridge Carnation parade with breakfast at Timmy’s Chalet.

The need for a tow truck when an engine mount broke, and a stranded car when the tow rope broke. Lunch at the Blue Parrot after the Louisville parade where we were awarded the second-place tro-phy for motorized units. Making it through the Arvada parade without running out of gas by the energy-saving technique of turning the engine off at stall points. Avoiding 5-K marathon runners at the Broomfield parade. Displaying our refur-bished tow truck at the Veteran’s Day parade in Denver. We had hoped to celebrate the “There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays” parade in Lyons, but the snow, ice and cold resulted in our regrets. Thirteen out of fourteen planned parades! If you want to be an active Shriner, with great fellowship and comradeship, come visit us!

By Jim CramThe Christmas Party on December 3rd held at the Homestead Grill with the Optars and two other Interbodies, was indeed a success. A big Thank You to Jim and Judy Taylor of the Optars for arranging the dinner and entertainment. The dinner selections were good and entertainer Gary Lee with his digi-tal trumpet was something special. The digital trumpet is capable of a full range of sounds. His music selections were from the 60’s and Christmas Carols, and ended with “O Holy Night.” We were pleased to have our Divan Rep. and his Lady Carol in attendance, and for him to be included in our Unit photo. Congratulations to Jay and Sher-ry Wikholm who celebrate their 17th Wedding Anniversary on Jan-uary 15th. Our sympathy is extended to Lewis and June Maxson. June’s older sister Martha Rusk passed away early in December. No servic-es were held. Martha had a career with the telephone company. During our December 10th lun-cheon, Herb Schillereff made the year-end Treasurer’s Report that was accepted by the members pres-ent. Herb prepared Thank You cards for Smoky Yoritomo and Jack Russell that included an expression of appreciation for their conduct of the weekly raffles. The following Club Officers were duly nominated and elected for the ensuing year – 2014. President: Herb Schillereff; First Vice Presi-dent: Doyle Roberts; Second Vice-President: Jack Russell; Secretary/Treasurer: Herb Schillereff; Chap-lain: Lewis Maxson; Circus Chair-man: Lewis Maxson; Membership Chairman: Lewis Maxson; Red Fez Reporter: Jim Cram. Installation will be scheduled during the latter part of January.

I trust you all had a very Merry Christ-mas and that the New Year will be good to all of us. The Band is starting the 2014 campaign by escorting the officers-elect into the Consistory for the mass installation of several blue lodges – Albert Pike 117, Friendship 185, Mosaic 184, Northglenn 194, and Paul Revere 130 on Saturday, 4 January 2014. This is the brain-child of WB Bobby Juchem. Last year he had a joint installation with Northglenn when he was installed as Master of Mosaic. It is his hope that this will become a tradition (at least for his lodge). If all goes as he plans, this will grow each year until it is a joint installa-

tion for all the area lodges. Then we are off the next Saturday for the annual Winterskól performance in Aspen. This one is very important to the Band since we will be playing with the Air Force Academy cadets once again. We hope to influence the new director to continue our tradition of football game halftime shows, concerts, and other performances. The cadets love it, and we are honored to perform with them. We are already booking our annual performances: Fat Tuesday in Snow-mass, several on Memorial Day, sev-eral graduations, the various highland games, and our favorites – the Honor Flights. We have a new snare student who will hopefully soon augment our ranks. Will be interesting to play with a snare again – we haven’t had one for three or four years now, and a snare defi-nitely adds to our performance. So if anyone out there is interested in getting in on the best time in the Shrine, come on out any Thursday evening and find out just how much fun we have. Hope to see you soon!

Well here it is, the last Red Fez arti-cle of the year. I don’t know where the time has gone. But winter starts

next week, and I know that we are all looking forward to spring com-ing. On the 15th of December, we had our annual Christmas Party, and those who missed it lost out on a good time. I want to thank all of you who did attend, and especially Sir Matt Raia our Illustrious Poten-tate and his wife Debbie, and our Divan Rep Rich Silver and his wife Janet. We were very pleased that they could make it, as they have so many obligations this time of the year, or I should say ALL year. And as time marches on, we are moving on to next year. Of course, that means our Installation of Offi-

cers. That will be held on Sunday, the 26th of January at 1PM, at the Community Center at Wind-sor Gardens. Our PC/PC CSSA Russ Gray has consented to be the installing Officer. I have sent an invitation to Swede Hanson who will be the new Commander at Al Kaly and asked if he could bring a few others with him as they have in the past. We had a good year last year and I hope that we can continue it for the New Year. Hopefully we are going to be able to pull the trailer in the parades again. The Officers for 2014 are myself Ed Richards as

Commander, Joel Roche as 1st Lt Commander and Eddie McGrady as 2nd Lt Commander/Adjutant. I will continue to write the Red Fez article for the coming year. Again, I want to thank all of the men who carried the Colors in the Parades and at our Stated Meetings, it was very much appreciated, believe me! We will carry as usual this coming year. So, until next time I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! God Bless! LIVE WELL – LAUGH OFTEN AND LOVE MUCH

It’s me again! Must get this out today so you will have it next year. On the 15th of December we had our Annual Christmas Party at Cinzetti’s and I personally want

to thank all of you that came, as we had a great turnout and a great time. We had two Past Potentates at the party, PP Dennis Proctor and his wife Judy, and PP Amer Plaist-ed and his fiancée, Queen of the Nile Sandy Davis and her mother, Carol. Both of these Past Potentates are also members of the Provost Guard. And we had a bunch of Past Provost Marshals in attendance, PPM Marvin Lewis and his wife Sallie, PPM Don (Cookie) Cooke, PPM Joe Gonzalez and his wife Janet, PPM Ron Dunsmore and his wife Patty, PPM Paul Stembel and his Lady Bernadette (Bernie) Jiron and my wife Pam Richards. Also in attendance was the wife of one of our PPM and Past Queen of the Nile Glenda Mattern, and

Lori Hannegan and her daughter Angela. Lori is the wife of Bill Hannegan who passed away this year; he was our Secretary/Trea-surer. And last but not least, one of our own Provost Guard and newly elected Assistant Rabban, Mike Trevathan and his wife Mary. All in all we had a great afternoon. The ladies were presented with a token of our appreciation and we know that they are greatly appreciated. Without them backing us up, there wouldn’t be a Provost Guard. Thanks to Greg Melton for put-ting his time and effort into put-ting those baskets together, it was really his idea to do that. Our Installation of Officers will be held on the 20th of January in the East Room of the Shrine at

6 PM. PP Tony Dattilo has gra-ciously offered to do the Instal-lation. The new line of Officers are: Provost Marshal Keith (Casey) Campbell, 1st Asst Provost Mar-shal Ron Dunsmore and 2nd Asst Provost Marshal Rod Johnson. There is an opening for 3rd. Our new Secretary/Treasurer is John Carr. I hope that all members and wives can attend the Installation. I want to personally thank all the members who worked all of the events this year, and I hope that we can get more younger mem-bers out to work this next year for Casey. I hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. God Bless!

The bands had a busy December performing at Southwest Plaza and our monthly Tea Dance at the Shrine. Our December

social was held at The Old Neighborhood Restaurant. We had a White Elephant auction and raised over $200 for band expenses. Mike Trevathan was the auctioneer.

We are making plans for the sale of the Temple. We have made arrangements for band practice at the Consistory if needed until a permanent new location is found. We are working on plans to store our extensive music library in a climate controlled location.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Welcome to 2014. I can’t believe that I’m writing the Red Fez for January already. We had a great year in 2013 for the V.I.P.’s; I hope we continue to have the participation from all of you this coming year. As most of you already know, we lost one of our lady members of the V.I.P’s,

Barbara Davis. Barbara will be missed by all of us. She had a great sense of humor, and was excellent at surprising us

with great food dishes at our picnic. Her hearty laughter will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her fam-ily. I have put together a social calendar for 2014. I did it the same drawing as last year; I will E-Mail you the date list. You will notice that I changed the date, reason being, holiday conflicts. If for some reason you cannot do your social, please contact me ahead of time so I

can make other arrangements. Please watch for upcoming events in the RED FEZ. Dates have changed for some: for instance the circus. At our last stated meeting, our new Divan officers were elected and will be sworn in this month, along with the unit officers. Please refer to the Fez for more information. Also the sell-ing, and relocating of our Temple was discussed. I would suggest you attend the next stated meetings if you want to keep informed. Remember, your input is as important as any member. THIS IS YOUR TEMPLE OF THE FUTURE BEING PLANNED. We had our Christmas Party with Daraja on December 14th, and to say I was disappointed in it would be an

understatement. For those of you who attended you know what I’m talking about, enough said. As you will see in the new social list, I decided to do our regular social in December. I think there are fewer expenses, better choices of places, and less hassle. If you have other suggestions, please let me know. Our next meeting will be January the 8th. Second Wednesday of the month, at Mickey’s Steakhouse, 70th & Broad-way, 7:00 p.m., Dinner @ 5:30, please try to come. If I have forgotten some-thing, call me and I can send an E-Mail to the membership. Always remember, we are Masons first. KEEP IT ON THE SQUARE AND ON THE LEVEL.

We would like to con-gratulate our new Potentate for 2014, The

Illustrious Sir Phil Hause, his First Lady Chris-tine and the mem-bers of his Divan. We wish them a great year and offer our support during this time of transition. The purpose of our unit is

to assist the Potentate in welcom-ing all Nobles to our Temple and to encourage all Nobles to take an active part in Shrine activities. Our second purpose is a monthly social meeting, always open to Ladies, to

promote good fellowship, and fra-ternalism. Our December social was held at Willis Case Golf Course. We had Aztec dancers, the Huitz-ilopochtli Traditional Aztec Dance Group, perform for entertainment.

Their traditional cos-tumes were beautiful, especially their feath-ered head gear. They were accompanied by ceremonial drums. The Meeters wish all Nobles and their fami-lies a peaceful and Happy New Year!

The Christmas Party was a huge success, around 30 people attended. We sang and did the usual “White Ele-phant” grab bag. Boy did they go for that, it was “sweets” everybody enjoyed the festivities. The decorations were done very well, all in all it was a success and enjoyed by everyone. Dave Marshall’s book is now at the book stores. I think I will wait until it comes out in paperback or made into a movie. Or I may wait for the sequel.

Writing is profitable – ask Dave and ask him to give you a ride in his new Cadil-lac, I’m sure he would be happy to. Dave is not the Author in residence. Good work Dave. Congratulations to Naomi and Charles on their wed-ding, nice couple. We wish

them happiness and a full life from here in. Ellen Tye: let’s get that shoulder well – we need you here at the Boulder Shrine Club. We need someone to “Zip” around. The next All Club meeting will be on Saturday, January 11th 9AM American Legion Post #10, Boulder. RSVP if you attend to Glen Smiley 303-678-1656. Stop shopping, Christmas is over.
