Recently, 0. number of th ese radiosonde stations ha ve been equipped with radi o-th eodolites for the (let. erminat.ion of upper wind s. The method has generally been to a ttach to th e same balloon " ·100 Mes tran smitter along with t. he rad iosonde instrument. Tho radiosonde transmit ter operates at 80 and the signals from the moteoro grap h uni t a TC recorded on n ground-based receiver sud recordin g equipment tuned to 80 :\(cs. Tho receiv er of the radio-theodolite works on a frequency of ,10' 1 and tracks the rawin trans mitter by lI U'lU18 of an antenna system utilising split-pattern tracking. There are four antenna bays consisting of :l :! half -wave elements spaced half wave-lengt h ap art . There are four positions of the antenna lobes and four pips appeor on the oscilloscope, each pip representing one position of the lobe. When the pips are of equal height, the antenna syst em is directed norma l to tho direction of propagation of the radio beam from the rawin transmitter in tho balloon. Through these two channels inf or- rnation is received rrgar (UlIg radiosonde data comprising values of pressure, temperature und humidity and raw in da ta giviug the an- gular co-ordiuates (azimuth and elevation) of the balloon at minute int erval s, The hei ght val ue s are obtained from the pressure data from the radiosonde and thereby the wind velocity and its direction is me asured at different levels in the upper atmosphere, For quite some time the need for obtaining both radiosonde and rawin da ta from the same transmitte r ha s b een keenly felt. The usc of a single tran smit ter also helps in elimina- ting a separate radiosonde receiver in the ground equipment. The main problem was how to ada pt th e chronometric radiosonde to obtniu temper at ure, pressure Bud humidity data on the F-M channel of the rad io-theodo- lite receiver. In the present paper a method has been described whereby the eo Mcs rad io- Sonde tra nsmi tter has been dispensed wi th amI the 400 )lcs rawin transmitt er has been mad e to give F-M signals at each contact of th e meteorologically sensit ive pens with t he contacting helix of the meteorograph uuit of the radiosonde. This simplification has nat urally decreased the cost of the combined rawin-radi osonde fli ght and has also climi- nated a separate operato r for the radi osonde recorder.
