A Message from the District Governor

Greetings to all Rotarians. It feels like just yesterday when I was preparing to take

office as the new District Governor for District 7410. Working with IPDG Paul

Budd O’Malia and the late DGN Robert Hemphill, the G-Team as we referred to it,

helped me prepare for my upcoming duties.

But the joys that I experienced through this year could not have been described to

me by any Past District Governor. It was a period that I had to experience for my-

self. No words can explain or express the privilege that I have experienced by be-

ing your governor. As I have indicated on many occasions, a District Governor is really just a Rotarian

that has taken on different duties for a year. YOU are what makes a District; you are the blood that flows

through the heart that makes Rotary GREAT. Each club is different in size, makeup and structure, but all

have clearly demonstrated their commitment to their communities, fellow Rotarians and the world. During

this period, the time has flown by quickly, but the memories will last a lifetime.

As I reflect on my visits to each club, I have fond memories of Rotarians committed to their community,

their club and Rotary International. YOUR commitment to District 7410 has resulted in great advance-

ments in membership. This was the accomplishment of many of you. The Assistant Governors, espe-

cially Ray Petty, Al Noble, Bob Chavey and Membership Committee Chair Karen Breitlauch, are to be

commended on increasing membership by 206 members. Remember, the issue is not just getting new

members, but it is about introducing our friends and associates to the greatness of Rotary and the opportu-

nities to utilize their gifts for the betterment of humankind.

Through your hard work and commitment to Rotary, we have increased our club numbers from 41 to

43. Yes… two new Clubs, the Rotary Club of Hamlin and the Rotary Club of Winola joined Rotary Inter-

national this year. The Rotary Club of the Top-O-Pocono restructured and renamed itself, the Rotary

Club of Blakelee and increased its membership from six to 18. The district has also started an E-

Club. These are indicators of a growing district, not a district that is preparing to be dissolved. The credit

goes to each of you who have taken the time to ask someone to join them at a Rotary meeting. The credit

goes to every member who has taken the time to call a member who has been missing from our group to

bring them back into the fold. Cont. on page 2

PUBLIC IMAGE CORNER

After eight years of being the editor of the district newsletter,

the time has come for me to take a break. It has been my pleas-

ure to watch the publication grow as participation from the

clubs has increased dramatically. It has expanded from a four-

page hard copy publication to a 20 plus page on-line monthly

newsletter packed with members sharing up-to-date information

on membership, fundraisers, projects, and much more.

I wish to thank everyone for contributing to the newsletter all

these years, and I hope that you will keep the lines of communi-

cation open, not only in the district newsletter, but in your local

newspapers in your hometowns as well. I wish to thank the

District Governors with whom I have worked for their sup-

port. I also wish to thank our former Administrative Assistant

Debbie Sobeck and our current Administrative Assistant Brenda

Allen who published the newsletter for many years.

Best wishes for many successful years in Rotary.

Foundation, under the leadership of PDG Ted Silver, Lisa Fin-

klestein and Mary Ellen Bentler and many others from each of the

clusters and clubs, has made it possible for us to reach our financial

commitment for the year. But Foundation is much more that collect-

ing money, it is about utilizing our time and talents to help the

world. We have done that, and we in District 7410 have played a

great part in changing the future for many. Look at the changes that

we have made in combating Polio.

Look at the children who now have clean water and the opportunity

for an education. Think about your community and the children

who may not have had any Christmas gifts if it had not been for Ro-

tary. Think about the young men and women who now have oppor-

tunities to advance their education and advance their ability to learn

through the Youth Exchange Program and RYLA. YOU made it

happen. Look at what we have done to help the victims of the Hurri-

cane Sandy. Yes, YOU have been part of this great Rotary move-

ment and moment.

I would also like to thank our Administrative Assistant, Brenda Al-

len, for her support and friendship throughout this past Rotary

year.

Again, thanks to all of you for your commitment to this great organi-

zation we call ROTARY.

And thanks for the memories!

The Athens and Sayre School Districts, in conjunction with the Waverly, NY School District, held their an-

nual Top Ten Seniors Recognition Banquet on May 9. The Three "Valley" Rotary Clubs event is held each

year to recognize and honor the outstanding Senior students for their excellence in academic studies, extracur-

ricular activities and service to the community. Although the students are not identified by names in these

Annual Installation Dinner Set

The Annual Installation Dinner will be held on June 27 at the

Inn at Nichols Village. Rotarians and their guests will enjoy

the success we’ve had under President John Hambrose and

will welcome Bob Vielee as our incoming President. Eileen

Christian and her committee have been hard at work organiz-

ing a roster of previous Four Way Test Award winners

and bestowing the award on a notable non-Rotarian who ex-

emplifies the Four Way Test attributes. Be there to find out

who that is! Reservations can be made by notifying any Ro-

tary member.

Members of the Abington Business and Professional

Association (ABPA) recently presented Rotary Club

of The Abingtons a check for $1,000 to help with the

Annual Fireworks Display to be held Wednesday,

July 3 (raindate July 4) at the Abington Heights Mid-

dle School at dusk. The money was raised at the re-

cent Men In Black event, sponsored by the ABPA.

Dallas Rotary Club awards book scholarships

Several area high school students, who will be college

bound this fall, were recently presented with checks for

$500 each to help offset their expenses for books during

their first semester on campus. The Rotary Club of Dal-

las has awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships since

the inception of the program.

For more than 50 years it has been an honor and a privi-

lege for the Rotary Club of Dallas, an all-volunteer com-

munity service organization, to share in the dreams of

our best and brightest young people from Dallas, Lake

Lehman and Northwest Area School Districts. They

received their scholarships at a recent dinner held in

their honor and accompanied by their parents and sib-

lings.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF DALLAS

Dallas Rotary Club donates life-saving

devices to police officers

The Dallas Rotary Club recently donated 30 Individ-

ual Patrol Officer Kits with Combat Gauze, which are

designed to provide personnel with a compact and

durable individual hemorrhage control kit, to treat

bleeding from penetrating wounds and other trau-

matic injuries which law enforcement officers may

incur in the line of duty. These kits are packaged for

small space and designed to fit into a pocket or pouch

which allows personnel to keep a compact bleeding

control and direct pressure kit on their person where

it is needed the most. The Dallas Rotary Club is

pleased to support our law enforcement officers in the

Back Mountain, but with the hope that they will

never have to use them. The total cost of the project

was more than $2,000. Several Chiefs expressed

their appreciation to all Dallas Rotarians for their

show of support for law enforcement in our commu-

nity.

Several law enforcement officers and members of the Dallas Rotary Club gathered for the presenta-tion. From left: Lehman Township Police Officer Har-old Cain, Dallas Township Police Chief Robert Jolley, Dallas Borough Police Chief Jim Drury, Dallas Rotary Club President Todd Buckley, Rotary District Gover-nor Art Peoples, Kingston Township Police Chief Jim Balavage, Harveys Lake Police Chief Charlie Musial. Wound kits will also be delivered to the Jack-son Township Police Department which was unavail-able for the photo.

new officers and board members The Dallas Rotary Club officers and board members for

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WELLSBORO

Don Johnson of The Rotary Club of Wellsboro, needed another banner displaying the “Four-Way Test” for the Ro-

tary float in the 72nd Laurel Festival Parade held in Wellsboro on June 15th. He reported that it appears that Wells-

boro is the only club which has one of these banners. Don said that in his 45 years as a member of the Wellsboro

Club, this banner has been on display at every meeting. He finds that this banner, as a reminder of the Four-Way

Test at each meeting, helps him keep the four questions of the test in the forefront of his actions both personally and

as part of the Club: Is it the TRUTH; Is it FAIR to all concerned; Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIEND-

SHIPS; and Is it BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

By what means do other Clubs keep the Four-Way Test in front of the membership?

New President To Be Installed for Rotary Club of Hazleton

Dr. John Madden will be installed as the 93rd President of the Rotary Club of

Hazleton at the annual President’s Party to be held at the Valley Country Club on

June 28, 2013.

John has been a member of the Rotary Club of Hazleton since 1998 when he was

sponsored for membership by Rotarian Dr. Harold Aurand. Madden’s Rotary ac-

tivities have included service as a member of the Board of Directors, Vice Presi-

dent, President-Elect and Dictionary Project Chairman among many others.

“I am proud to be a member of Rotary. Its role in worldwide polio eradication

alone makes it worth the effort. It’s great to do useful projects and to socialize with

such a fine group of people”. explains Dr. Madden. “The Hazleton Rotary Club is

particularly engaging in a wide variety of projects, most of which have been in-

tended to benefit local children. These projects range from providing a dictionary

to every third grader in the area to offering college scholarships. “ Madden adds,

“International projects, performed in conjunction with other clubs, have concerned

providing clean water and improved health in poor rural villages and participation

in international actions such as the polio program.”

Dr. Madden says his goals for the club for 2013-14 are, “to continue to focus on our service activities and to give

members full opportunity to participate in these activities. I believe that the general direction that Rotarians have

chosen is good, and I hope to assist in taking us down that path. I also hope that we will be able to enjoy ourselves in

the process. Fellowship makes membership enjoyable and sustains our work.”

Raised in the Chicago area, Madden graduated from Hofstra University, received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Adel-

phi University and did postdoctoral work at Northwestern University.

He is married to the former Margo Newcomer and they have two children. A son Will, resides in Denver and daugh-

ter Betsy, resides in Philadelphia. He and his wife moved to the area in 1998 when he was appointed CEO of Penn

State Hazleton, a position from which he retired in 2007.

Dr. Madden officially takes over the reins of the club on July 1, 2013. Other officers and Board members will be:

Tim Genetti, President-Elect; Ron Avellino, Vice President, Bernie Rudegeair, Secretary; Pat Ward, Recording

Secretary and Sergeant at Arms; Pat Owens, Jr., Treasurer and Paul Malone, lst Past President. Members of the

Board will be Fred Attick, John Beltrami, Reverend Tom Cvammen Tom Hood, Pat Korb, Jeff Lotz, DeAnn Miller

and Jerry Panisak.

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular,

to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupa-

tions, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of busi-

ness and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
