Who we arePlan is a global movement for change, mobilizing millions of people around the world to support social justice for children in developing countries.

What we doWe give children, families and communities the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and build sustainable solutions for improving their own lives. Plan’s work to promote child rights and lift millions of children out of poverty is based around eight core areas: Education, health, water and sanitation, protection, economic security, emergencies, child participation and sexual health including HIV.

How we workWe involve grassroots and regional organizations, as well as local and national governments, so improvements will last. Placing children at the heart of our work, we seek insight from all age groups to create better lives and brighter futures. Because girls face unique barriers, we address gender discrimination in all of our programs. Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, we have only agenda: to improve the lives of children.

Where we workPlan works in 70 countries around the globe, including 51 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Because I am a Girl is Plan’s global initiative to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls – and everyone around them – out of poverty. To do this, Plan creates sustainable projects in developing countries to improve girls’ access to clean water, food, healthcare, education, and protection from violence and exploitation.

The plight of girlsGirls in the poorest regions of the world are among the most disadvantaged people on the planet. They face unique barriers to survival and development – simply because they’re girls. We will never eliminate global poverty unless we invest equally in all our children and address inequalities for girls.

The power of girlsThere is no question that investing in girls in developing countries is key to reducing global poverty and instability. Girls have a unique power to positively influence the lives of those around them. If they are healthy, educated, and empowered, they will pull themselves out of poverty, and bring their children, communities and nations along with them.

The Plan for girlsPlan has a range of programs to improve the lives of girls and give them equal access to health care, education, protection, independence, and an opportunity to participate in society. Our programs include scholarships, safe schools and dormitories, reproductive and maternal health programs, life skills, vocational training, financial literacy programs, microfinance and more.

What about the boys?Plan does not only work with girls! We address gender discrimination in all our program work to ensure that as many girls as boys get access to education, healthcare, and the skills and opportunities needed become independent adults who break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their children.

Writing about Plan Positive, engaging and realIn describing Plan’s work, the tone, manner and content of all communications should be positive, engaging and real.

Positive: The focus is on what has been or could be achieved. We do not want to present hopelessness and despair. The children and families we work with live in very difficult circumstances, but they bring energy and dedication when working to improve their lives.

Engaging: We want to engage readers by using language and images that show the impact of Plan’s work and make them feel part of it.

Real: We capture the daily challenges and successes that happen in the lives of the children and families we work with.

Dignity, respect and potentialWords and images should always emphasize potential rather than misery or hopelessness, even in times of humanitarian crisis.

Collaboration, cooperation, empowermentCommunity members – including children and youth – participate in Plan’s projects and are critical to their success.

Child protectionPlan has a duty to ensure children are not put at risk engaging in our programs. When referring to children in Plan communities, use first name and country name only – no last name or community name.

Always consult with Plan staff when writing about or using photos of children in Plan program areas to ensure all our child protection guidelines are met.
