Choosing to Be GreatGood schools and great districtsdon't happen by accident. Forboth teachers and districts, greatness comes through much ofthe same process as it does in thesubject I used to teach, chemistry. In chemistry, youcome up with a hypothesis basedon the best data you have, runexperiments and then evaluatethe data to see if you're right. In the classroom, teachers use thebest proven education strategiesthey can find to help every one of their students be successful. Then several times a year, the teachers and leaders in theschool district take a hard look at the data, evaluate what'sworking and what's not and make changes accordingly. In late September, the Kentucky Department of Educationreleased the latest round of scores from the KentuckyPerformance Rating for Educational Progress (K‐PREP)assessments. And overall, things are headed in the rightdirection in Kentucky.  [Read more]

Keeping Your Kids Safe Online Keeping your kids safe in the ageof continuous internet access andsocial media is tougher than everthese days. My wife and I work ininformation security, but even westruggle to keep up with evolvingtechnology. With new websites and appscoming out every day, it's easy tosee how parents can feel a little

overwhelmed. So what can you do to keep your kids safe? Thebiggest step is to start with a conversation. And the good newsis, there's an online tool to help! The Smart Talk is a fun and simple way to develop tech groundrules with your kids. Developed by LifeLock and the NationalPTA, the interactive website enables families to createpersonalized technology ground rules together by discussing keyonline safety topics. These include safety and privacy, screentime, apps and downloads, texting and calling and social mediaand respect. [Read more]

Have participants decorate theposter with photos of their friends or pictures of children of allraces interacting together.  Have children outline their hands, cut them out and glue/tapethem together to make a chain of linking hands (have eachchild do this multiple times to lengthen the chain). Let childrendecorate the hands with markers, stickers, etc., then displaythe chain in your school. Invite students to write something unique about themselves onsquares of paper, then decorate and connect the squares tomake a Unity Quilt and hang it in your school's hallway with abanner, "Our School Has Unity Covered".

Bowen Elementary applied and received a grant from Lowe's for$5000 and a grant from the Lyndon City Council for $10,000 touse toward the project. Bowen's PTA hopes to raise more than$20,000.00 for their share of the project.

In September, the PTA put on a "Fit Fest" to raise these funds, including activities like a dunking booth, inflatable basketballcourt, and giant human hamster balls.  Each class also provided a baskets for an auction and their silentauction offered the coveted prize of "King and Queen of theCarpool line!"
