September 2014

September is a transitional month in Naples, with many returning to town and to normal activities. I was pleased with participation in worship this summer, and especially by the number of children coming on Sundays with their families. Now the beginning of the school year is here, which we celebrated on Backpack Sunday, August 17.

With the start of the school year comes the advent of our church program year as well. Our staff has been busy throughout the summer making plans for programs that connect children, youth and adults to Christ’s mission at Moorings. Please be on the lookout for announcements and mailings concerning the making of a new church picture directory, an outstanding Hyacinth Series, great Distinguished Speakers, inspiring Faith and Art programs, Sunday School and Wednesday Connection rotations, and meaningful Mission and Outreach events.

I will continue to preach from the Gospel of Matthew up until Thanksgiving, highlighting how Jesus connects our hearing and doing of the Word. In Matthew, Jesus is revealed as not only a great moral teacher, but also as the Son of God who reveals the coming of God’s kingdom through miracles and acts of compassion. My office is providing a list of Sunday readings and sermon titles during these months, so you can read ahead for each service.

Whether you are near or far from Naples right now, I invite your continued prayers for our vital ministries. Be sure to give thanks for all the good he is doing among and through us!

Yours in Christ,

Children’s News

Fall Sunday School for ChildrenGraded Sunday School classes for the 2014-2015 year begin on Sunday, September 7. We will continue using our popular large and small group curriculum and will strive to follow these goals for the year:

• To treasure each child as a gift from God • To tell and show children that God is love• To make working with children one of the most important things the

church does• To include children in everything the church does – from Sunday

worship to helping others

We have exciting plans for the year including a special project in both the fall and the spring and we hope that you will plan on having your children present on September 7 when we begin. Please help us be a community where children and adults care about each other, and work together to follow Jesus’ teachings and do God’s work.

The Moorings Presbyterian Preschool opens its doors on September 2 to welcome 98 children and their families. Our 2014-2015 teaching staff consists of Mrs. Barbara Graefe and Ms. Mariann Martino working with our two year olds, Mrs. Rebecca Dermody, Mrs Amy Howarth and Mrs. Moira Reynolds our three year old teachers, and Mrs. Stefanie Doyl, Mrs. Margaret Frino, Mrs. Heather Leedy and Mrs. Carol Robinett our Pre-K teachers.

All About Me is the theme for the month of September as the children learn about their new classmates and their families. Developing new routines, fire and safety drills, and learning their way around our beautiful campus will help complete the month!

MPC Educational Scholarship RecipientsEvyn Graefe, Alex Nunner,

Eleanor Reidy, and Haley Schultheis

The Moorings Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund was established to provide assistance for higher education to worthy students who have been active participants in the life of the church. The initial funding was provided through the generosity of a late member of the Moorings Presbyterian Church, Mr. Al McFadden. Graduating High School students are eligible to apply for the onetime $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must meet the base criteria and are measured on church involvement.

High School Mission TripChallenge to Change

Along with partnering with the MPC Mission Outreach Committee for local events, our High school youth participated in a week long mission experience in Lithia, Florida. Organized

by Camp Cedarkirk, the week was called Challenge to Change. Our youth, along with others from across the country, spent their week at Beth-el Farmworkers ministries learning how every job, no matter how big or small, makes a difference. They participated in projects such as painting the facility, doing yard work and working in their food bank preparing bags and handing them out to the hundreds of people who come each week. As the week came to an end, they talked about the differences they had made and challenges they had faced and how they could continue to make a change in the world.

The Kids enjoyed their time and worked hard together.

One youth said, “It felt good

to make a difference.”

Youth Art PresentationAs a part of the Faith & Art offerings, our youth will be working on a special art project that will be displayed during the month of November.

Our project will be through the use of assemblages and collages of images to illustrate particular scripture verses.

Our scripture focus will be Ecclesiastes 3:1-9, Everything Has Its Time.

Moorings Handbells Out West

Moorings Handbells took flight in June, checking 12 extra pieces of chimes, bells, and foam pads—all part of traveling with 11 handbell ringers. Participant John Lawson, in his daily devotional writing, reflected on the experience in a piece called Bells and Blessings. Here is an excerpt:

We had a memorable trip out west. Playing handbells somehow prompted in me a sense of grateful wonder for the journey we are on together. Initially, I thought that we had come a long way from Florida to Oregon/Washington, but one of the players joining us was a pastor that came from Beirut, Lebanon. Despite her relative young age, she had come a long way spiritually as well as geographically. It was she who gave the sermon message at a gathering of worshippers. Her words were was full of understanding that our lives as Christian bell ringers, whether we know it or not, retell the glory of God’s handiwork in us—not unlike the way nature proclaims God through the whispering silence of a retreat center and the reality of a face of nature changed by the likes of Mount St. Helens. The reality is that not all handbell ringers are church goers but many are spiritual having been humbled by the skill needed to be musical with a bell...having received grace to go on after a mistake... to be on time with the next note at the next measure. What struck me about that sermon was how she connected the experience of her family life in a war zone, to scripture about the Holy City of Jerusalem and the faith experience of our lives together as a team of bell musicians in a place where nature can be at war with its surrounding. She thoughtfully connected the reality that we were all playing in a place where, at times, the mountains do rock the earth.

In August, John Lawson and family Amy, Stephen, and Jessica continued a summer of ringing at an International Handbell Symposium in Jeju, South Korea.

News About Our Summer Trip to Immokalee

An energetic and enthusiastic multigenerational team of 39, including 14 Youth, participated in a Mission Outreach trip to Immokalee on Wednesday, June 11. We learned about the accredited educational programs and childcare that Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA) provides for children of migrant farm workers and rural, low income families. The Youth and several adults participated in a painting project at RCMA, while others helped sort at Guadalupe Social Services Pantry, and learned about the progress of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Fair Food Program, to ensure better wages and working conditions in Florida’s tomato fields. John Lawson and Pastor Learned discussed Christian service in the Immokalee community, and an Immokalee high school student talked about her dreams of becoming a midwife and then a doctor – dreams she believes will come true thanks to Immokalee Foundation, One by One, Habitat for Humanity and Beta.

Calling All Presbyterian Women

“And now the rest of the story”…who didn’t like Paul Harvey! I have a favorite of his that I’d like to share - a paraphrased and condensed version but the message is the same. A young, newly married couple is hosting a family gathering for Easter. The bride is preparing the traditional ham for the meal and before putting the meat into the pan she cuts off the end. Why, her husband wants to know. She replies, “That’s the way my Mother always did it.” So, young husband is eager for his mother-in-law to arrive and put the question to her. His wife’s parents ring the doorbell, hugs and greetings are given and as soon as the opportunity presents itself, the ham in the pan question is

posed. He gets the same answer, “That’s the way my Mother always did it.” Thankfully, he thinks, Grandmother will be coming soon. Upon her arrival, pleasantries are exchanged and young husband dives right in with his need to know why did you cut the end off the ham? Her answer, “That’s the only way it would fit in my pan!”

How many times do we do things because “that’s the way we’ve always done it” without really knowing why. Traditions are comforting and reassuring as they provide a connection to people and places we hold dear. I am learning with my own family’s growing pains what absolutely positively must stay, what we can be flexible about and how we let the circle grow with new people, places and ideas.

As Presbyterian Women gear up for a new season, I would appreciate hearing your reflections on the good things that sustain our programs and missions or possibilities you see for something new or something that just needs a little tweaking. You may also have thoughts about something that deserves our respect for the good it provided but the need it filled has either been served or changed and we need to let it go. I’m all ears!!
