Dear Professor Schneemann As a highly motivated student of Italian Linguistics and Literatures and Art History, I would like to apply for the advertised grant to take part in the excursion to New York from February 18th to 24th. In December 2011 I completet my Bachelor’s degree (‚magna cum laude’). I will begin my Master’s degree in Art History in February 2012, but already attended some graduate courses during my bachelor studies. I would like to take the study trip to New York as an opportunity to learn more about today’s art scene and to further my knowledge of contemporary art. I am also very interested in finding out about the visions, strategies, caracteristics and difficulties of New York’s art scene. My interest in contemporary art was awakened by an internship I did in summer 2010 at the Art collection of the Mobiliar Insurances Company in Berne. American Art is represented in the collection by an artwork of Jasper Johns, entitled Bent Blue (1970), which has been produced in the highly creativ New York Art scene. This piece of art increased my interest in American Art and especially photography. This was also why I decided to accept an offer to work for the Karl-Jaberg archive at the Universitiy of Berne. Here I am able to use my professional knowledge and to revise the scientific database, particularly the archive of the many photographies that Jaberg made on his numerous travels to Italy and the Ticino. Some of his excursions in the early thirties also brought him to North America. On the study trip to New York I would like to deepen my knowledge of contemporary art as well as compare the theoretical notions I have with today’s art scene in New York and to use the gained knowledge in my future studies in art history. I am confident that the combination of my motivation, knowledge and experience will qualify me for the scholarship.
